"The Movement of Paint"
William (Bill) Hewes is an American self-taught artist born in Easthampton, Massachusetts in 1957. Before becoming a full-time artist in 2012, Hewes worked in the building trades for 40 years, and he often incorporates the skills learned from his tradesman work into his artistic practice.
Hewes creates large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in the Action/Drip style, even building his own spinning table to produce dramatic spin paintings. After experimenting with different styles, he settled on abstract works because of the freedom within the genre.
Hewes lists his artistic inspirations as Jackson Pollock, Robert Natkin, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, and Leon Golub. His work features dynamic surface textures and energetic applications of paint using acrylic and enamel on canvas.
