- 'Capitol' comes from the Latin 'Capitolium,' the name of the temple of Jupiter at Rome on the Capitoline hill.It's insane how useless the word "capitol" is. It's literally only the building. "Capital" is every other use. Capital as in money and goods, capital as in human/social capital, capital as in the uppercase letter, capital as in the capital city, capital as in capital punishment.
