Parphrasing some conversations/emotions on #Fedi the last few days, for clarity:

> "Ah, I see. Someone failed your arbitrary purity test, and now you are angry and want to hurt them with your words."

"No. I'm angry that greedy corporations have executed one PsyOp after another to make a morally clear issue murky and allow abuses to continue, and I will use what seems on the surface to be ridiculous-sounding exaggerated syllogisms and polarized statements to restore clarity to the fact that we are somehow debating just how much baby-shredding should be allowed in Open Source projects, for flip's sake.
I understand that the people who have made tragically obtuse and seemingly clueless statements in defense of the indefensible are also human beings who have mummys and daddys that love them very much, and I wish them no harm or ill.
This is not rancor, it is rectitude. Maybe look it up in the dictionary sometime."

Now I'm pondering the alternate reality where I didn't spill tea all over my beloved MacBook Air in 2019. I wonder how long I would've continued daily driving MacOS. The hardware would've been supported by Apple until 2021, but I wouldn't have been motivated to buy a new one at that point.

I guess I'm glad the events worked out the way they did.

I have a hard time relating too much to me-from-ten-years-ago that happily used Google Chrome, Google Drive, and typed all his notes in Microsoft Word. 😝

  • Loads #Fediverse notifications
  • @Tusky whimpers
  • Phone bursts into flames
  • Spacetime folds in on itself
  • I'm playing Pasur with Dave Bowman in the hotel room at the end of time
  • The unnerving space fetus is keeping score
  • Captain Picard's 42 palms are simultaneously placed on his forehead
  • The universe is singing its song to me:
"Oooolwayyyz look on the broight soide of loife....!"

As it is also his birthday, I cannot let it pass without also honoring his memory. He would have been 18 today. (Ok, that breaks my brain a little πŸ˜…)

"That's bullshit and loser thinking... stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more," are the words of a sociopath.

(Yes, it's a direct (abbreviated) [quote].)

I'm out.

P.S. I just found out that Sociopath CEOβ„’ was going to re-interview everyone based on how they were using AI, but backed down over the furor. If your company enables such destructive and sociopathic behavior from its "leadership," it deseves to crash and burn.

WHAT THE FLUFF, did I seriously just write a (dead-simple) #uxntal syntax highlighting script in #bash?!? πŸ˜‚

https://codeberg.org/rldane/scripts/src/branch/main/tallight

All it does right now is put comments in blue and UPPERCASE strings of three or more characters in bold using tput.

I started writing it in #POSIX script, but POSIX's read doesn't have a way to read a character at a time. ;)

Just FYI, on this ten-year-old thinkpad, it took 16 seconds to process a 639KiB (concatenated-together) source code file. So it'll probably be decent enough for most purposes.

#Perl would've been better, but I'm quite rusty at it. ☺️

Ok, here to pick your brain again, #FreeBSD geniuses...

My preferred PDF/epub/etc reader, [Zathura], has been acting weird lately. Very glitcy and buggy.

I've tried reinstalling it, but that didn't help.

How can I reinstall a package and all of its dependencies?

pkg info only seems to tell me the library dependencies, not package dependencies.

Oh wait, I figured it out. XD #RTFM

doas pkg install --force $(for pkg in $(pkg info |grep zathura |sed 's/-2026.*$//'); do pkg info --dependencies $pkg; done |sed 's/:$//; s/^[[:space:]]*//; s/ .*$//; s/-[0-9.,_]*$//' |sort -u)

(It's still pretty buggy, though. :/
I might have to switch to [Sioyek, but it doesn't support #EPUB)

Ummm... what???

rld@Intrepid:~$ doas freebsd-update fetch install

#FreeBSD peeps,

How do you find out what the latest patch level is?

Right now, I'm on

rld@Intrepid:~$ uname -srm
FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p3 amd64
rld@Intrepid:~$

(Thanks to @patrick for informing me the "p" bit is called the 'patch level' πŸ˜„)

P.S., Oh wow, it seems that p6 is available. I'd still love to be able to find that out without actually running freebsd-update. πŸ˜„

Also, why doesn't bectl automatically switch to the new boot env when freebsd-update install runs???

Your blog post about hope and against doomerism might have hit a little better if:

  • It wasn't hosted on a platform that platforms actual freaking nazis
  • Wasn't subscribewalled
  • Didn't give you THREE FREAKING LINES of the blog post before hitting the subscribewall

Is this meant to be satire? Do you have an ounce of self-awareness?

Was listening to @tuxjam episode 133 in the car just now, and I gotta say, I truly love it when a single offhand joke sprouts legs and carries on for months after I completely forgot it.

"RISS" was me poking fun at @thelovebug for liking the Office 2007+ Ribbon interface. It stood for "Ribbon Interface Stockholm Syndrome" πŸ˜‚

lol holy crap, "doas make clean" from /usr/ports on my #FreeBSD laptop has been running for the past two hours, nearly. WHY??? πŸ˜‚

Could seriously use some parallelization.

Maybe next time, I'll do cd /usr/ports; for x in */*; do ( cd "$x"; doas make clean ) & done ;)

Totally random #TheGoodPlace #quote:

CHIDI: What did you say to him? Did you make him do this somehow?

ELEANOR: Nope, this was entirely his idea.
Dude, this is good news.
Michael's gonna get a chill retirement, which, frankly, he desperately needs, and I can finally relax.
It's forking perfect.

CHIDI: No, it's terrible.
Michael's wrong.
He's not the problem.

ELEANOR: Well, Michael did bring me here, which was the mistake that led to all the other problems.
So, in that sense, he is the real problem.
Ha! How do you like them ethics? I just ethics'd you in the face, Chidi!

CHIDI: It doesn't change the fact that we weren't truthful.
There's an old Chinese proverb:
"Lies are like tigers. They are bad."

ELEANOR: That's it?

CHIDI: It's more poetic in Mandarin.

(Apparently, the actual proverb is "θ°£θ¨€ηŒ›ε¦‚θ™Ž" (YΓ‘oyΓ‘n mΔ›ng rΓΊhΗ”), or "Rumors are as fierce as tigers.")

Edit: anyone->everyone, derp, sorry πŸ˜„

Rut row. Does anyone have the ability to update the #Signal package on #FreeBSD 15.1? πŸ˜„ :BlobCatBlushPlead:

P.S. Oh wait, there's /usr/ports/net-im/signal-desktop.

I might try running make there to see how painful it is. XD
