I’m pleased to share that Google is partnering with Constellation to bring 890 MW of new, reliable nuclear capacity to the PJM grid over the next five years. This agreement directly supports the modernization of 6 Constellation-owned nuclear power plants across Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey – all at no cost to other ratepayers. Together, the incremental capacity unlocked across these sites is the equivalent of bringing a new, large-scale nuclear reactor online, and these upgrades will support approximately 7,200 new construction jobs. In addition to upgrading Constellation’s nuclear plants, this agreement creates a framework to bring the best of Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to Constellation’s operations to increase speed to power, optimize power generation, and protect critical infrastructure. At Google, we believe that responsible execution is a choice – and that powering digital infrastructure and creating a more affordable, more reliable energy grid are two sides of the same coin.
As of today, Google has enabled over 1.5GW of new nuclear capacity for the U.S. energy system from increasing the power output of existing reactors and bringing dormant facilities back online. We just announced our partnership with Constellation to upgrade six nuclear plants connected to the PJM grid and deploy Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise to optimize their operations. This agreement will help sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs, support 7,200 new construction jobs, and unlock 890MW of additional clean nuclear capacity. For context, that's roughly equivalent to adding an entirely new large reactor to the electricity system, years faster than building one from scratch. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) set a goal to enable 5GW of domestic nuclear energy expansion by 2030 through uprates and restarts. Driven by Google's data center growth, our agreements are expected to enable nearly 25% of this national target. Did you know you can customize the format of Gemini responses to match your preferences? For example, if blocks of text are hard for you to read, you can set custom instructions in Gemini to prioritize scannability in all of its responses. This capability reflects our close collaboration with the neurodivergent community to better understand how AI can show up as a daily ally. Watch Perrin Anto explain how it works. Hello from Detroit, where I had the pleasure of announcing an expansion of the Alliance for Skilled Trades, with 14 new member companies, alongside Jim Farley, Larry Fink, and Linda Hubbard at Ford Accelerate. Building the critically needed physical infrastructure for America’s future requires collective action to address the shortage of skilled tradespeople across the country, driven by increased demand during a time when more people are retiring and exiting the industry. For every 100 skilled trades workers needed, training pathways are producing just 55 people. To help bridge the gap, the Alliance members are uniting to expand apprenticeships, modernize training, and scale these pathways at a national level – with a shared commitment to support skilled workforce initiatives in 30 states across the US. In partnership across the Alliance, we also released “The State of America's Skilled Trades: A National Report”, developed by Jobs for the Future (JFF) and The Burning Glass Institute, with key findings focused on identifying the barriers that currently exist preventing the American workforce from exploring opportunities in skilled trades. I’m proud to share an expansion of Google’s longstanding support for veterans and their loved ones as they transition out of military life, which includes training for active service members, military spouses, and veterans for the next chapter of their careers. In partnership with Hiring Our Heroes, Student Veterans of America (SVA), and HBI (Home Builders Institute), today Google is announcing a commitment to help 25,000 veterans and military family members build rewarding careers in skilled trades. This effort builds on Google’s work with BlackRock, Ford, and Carhartt on the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades, and Google.org’s broader AI Opportunity Fund for the United States to help ensure Americans benefit from this evolving technology. Across the country, demand for skilled professionals like master electricians, pipefitters, and infrastructure project managers is growing. As I’ve heard first-hand from individuals transitioning into these high-growth roles in skilled trades, these are careers – not just jobs – and at Google we are proud to help create more pathways to them.
