photo of printed comic page on yellow paper stock. Panels show a night scene in Sotenbori, then the interior of a bar, where 2 guys talk to each other

Ch.5 IS HERE!! 20 pages, so much work, so much ALT to write!

I also bound the zine for myself! It has bonus content! EVEN MORE freetalk! I forgot how to do kettlestitch and had to watch a tutorial. Last time I did it was for HWA several years ago? If you're interested in your own copy (non-committal), I have a form here. This is mostly so I know whether or not to even print more copies...for this rarepair from a person (me) that nobody knows about.

I went back to the library to print colour pages and the center margin was even worse than last time. Oh well! Scrappy forever! The automated print payment system overcharged me for an extra copy that I never asked it to print, but I do not have enough self confidence to go up to the staff to say...

"Excuse me your machine payment is wrong, see I only have this many copies printed." Gestures at my fandom drawings of older guys getting bloodied and beaten up

...and ask for a refund, so I considered it a donation to my local library for giving me access to copious Kaoru Mori books. I was paranoid that the prints would turn up at the machine long after I was gone. What if a kid picks it up!? What if my weird fanart scars them?! Then it occured to me that I saw kids playing FPS games when I was there, so drawing violence and some blood should be the least of my concerns.

Even if you have zero interest in reading this fanzine, you should look at the "incredible" zine photoshoot hahaha.

Some of my friends made stickers of their fur pals and I put them on my DIY cardboard shelf 💖!

I recently started playing Anthropeum, a daily guessing game where you look at museum artefacts and you have the guess the location and date. I'm absolutely terrible at it — my perception of time is ESP bad. But it's a nice way to engage with historical art and objects in a different and intentional way.

Fake's turn. I don't often use purple and blues + less-linework style + very unrealistic colours...but I rolled with it. Brush used was Moo draw comedy prop (interesting name).

Digital illustration of a person wearing a suit and propping up their glasses with their left hand. There are shapes of people in the foreground, and ambiguous shapes in the background that imply a crowded and dimly lit low sun level environment.

OC Qs from penbrydd

Is Fake missing any teeth? No more wisdom teeth!

How does Fake act, when they're afraid? Depends on what he wants to show. He's got some acting chops.

How would you change Fake for a Victorian AU? I don't think I'd change anything since either way, he'd stand out as a SEA guy; I guess he'd end up in a colonial slavery/servant context?! Though he'd prob charm his way into having more power.

What is the worst thing Fake has ever done? Left his brother and dog to fend for themselves.

How does Fake feel about thunderstorms? "A storm will always pass"

How does Fake sleep? Face-down

How does Fake act, when they're happy? It's really obvious. He sorta gets a troll-y lip curl and will really lay it on thick (see: HWA ch.10).

MKISA

When I first drafted MKISA ch.5 I didn't plan for Watase to have much airtime, but then I added more "plot" (ch.5 was originally 8p, now it's 16p...with still some possibility of expanding because I wasn't happy with the pacing) so he does now. Time to draw myself refs that I will not look at in time of need...(this is also due to the nature of panel sizes...which won't usually have space for details like this).

Digital sketches of 3/4, front, and side profile views of Watase's face, along with some doodles about his post-Like a Dragon: Gaiden fashion choices and my own notes and observations about his facial features, including: deep wrinkles around eyes and nose bridge, widow's peak, wider and rounder face, thicker neck, and prominent supraorbital ridges. There is a sketch of a offwhite and dark indigo pinstripe denim chore-like jacket with visible black contrast stitching, brass buttons, and 4 frontal pockets with flap closures. There's also an inner graphic t-shirt design with "red knight" kanji written on it, next to a sword and microphone.

I gave him ametora-inspired fashion.

In the 2022 Yakuzine, I said that Watase was the most Himbo, mostly because of how he appears in Y5. I changed my mind after what happened in later parts of the series (Watase's role changes, also there are even more Himbos appearing).

After making Watase go dad-mode in my comic, I began to really like him HAHA. I also like that Tsuruno (who is modeled after the actor, Yamaguchi Yoshiyuki) and Watase (who is not explicitly modeled after anyone IRL) both ended up with nostril margins that are higher nose tip.

If you told me to draw the differences between Sera and Watase, I'd just give up.

digital sketches of Tsuruno and Shishido outfits for chapter 5 of MKISA, including a full body shot and a 3/4 face shot. Tsuruno has a lot of bandages on his face, acrylic sunglasses, scarf, a hanten-like overcoat, slacks, and loafers on. Shishido wears a ball cap, face mask, streamlined jacket with removable lining, distressed black denim, and ankle boots.

Some Tsuruno and Shishido fits too. I love to hyperfixate on designing jackets, hahahaha. There really is no point thinking about where all the pockets or removable hood button snaps are when they're not going to be used in the comic... yet...I gotta. This has gotten worse after sewing my own clothing.

digital sketches of panels from MKISA ch.5, featuring Tsuruno taking a sip of a Manhattan at the bar. Watase enters shortly after and talks to Tsuruno.

I don't drink alcohol — my taste buds and body thinks it is poison and is super sensitive to it, thus my liver filters it out of my body quickly; a bunch of my fam are allergic too. So any time I have to draw alcohol, I have to look it up. In this case I wanted all the guys to be drinking something different (visually), but WHAT? I could've gone into a deep research hole about drinks and character pairings, but I just chose by aesthetics instead. I had to watch a bunch of videos to see what people even did with the garnishes of fancy drinks. DOES IT STAY ON THE RIM? DOES IT GO INTO THE CUP?! DOES IT GET TAKEN OUT?! DO YOU EAT IT?! SO many questions you can't bypass when working in a visual medium. I found some cringe Esquire articles about how men should never drink alcohol from straws.

I also had way too many thoughts about Akame and her fanclub. Sometimes I have to let my meanderings happen to satisfy my heart.

digital sketches of Akame featuring her regular outfit, idol outfit, a fake CD cover, her idol wand that is shaped like a sword, and some of the types of fans she has (homeless, ex-yakuza, younger fangirls that DIY capes, younger fanboys that are decked out in fangear)

In game, she's modeled from First Summer Uika whose style is always incredible, impeccable, 100%, no notes. I can't believe she exists.

This chapter has some serious and silly parts.

collage of 3 digitally drawn comic panels. One shows Watase craking his knuckles, another shows Tsuruno karaoke-ing, and the third shows Tsuruno and Watase making an O shape with their arms above their head while leaning over to their right-side.

Fishlips

An all-yellow outfit: butter knife literally made out of butter and a giant golden ingot. The T Rex skull from prior posts is still a top runner though, even if it's not yellow.

Fishlips's favourite flavour is "creamy" so they like cheese, butter, avocado, yogurt, and other milky stuff. Truly my child.

Reading

Mainly read long-running comic series this round.

Witch Hat Atelier #14: urghh Easties and his oaths...danger danger. I love all the knight uniforms and how they're all a bit different but still cohesive. The captain knight old lady is EXTRA COOL (flared pants, short hair, and powerful)!! I've probably said this before already.

Spy x Family #15: Same Becky...same. I liked this drama romance interlude with the Olds. It was nice to see into Melinda's mind to get a read of what her main deal is.

World Piece #4 (end): made me nostalgic for Toronto. Bubble tea and karaoke! I liked the inclusion of concept art at the end...that's a lot of world building for just a 4-vol series!

Real #16: I read the prev vol...YEARS ago...but I guess the plot has ultimately been vague (positive). Everyone's just trying to figure out what to do with their life (and basketball).

Kaiju No. 8 #15: kafka going full boss mode now (dun dun dun).

Akane-Banashi #15: SHIGUMA (yells). I'm here for this drama backstory. I think all the silly eyelid/eyebrow accents for the characters are really cute.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm #9-10: this higherschool has it way easier w/ hiding bods. Face reveal was Not was I thought because I'm so used to being baited by "extremely good looking" face reveals.

Nina the Starry Bride #17: Az, y u do dat...that was not smurt of you..... The side chara Sol and Noa youth sidestory was nice. I feel like I've invested too much time into this series to quit it, even though my actual fav chara is the cockatoo Neena, who does not have enough air time, HAHA.

Way of the Househusband #15: An slapping the other kid for being rude is ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻. I swear the drinking Yakuza cameo is modeled after Takeuchi Riki.

Magilumiere Girls #12: Glad to see them back in action! Kaede's host name rationale was the best reveal.

On top of my unread digital pile is the unread IRL pile...

Blessed with the announcement of a Tamura Yuto movie photobook (photog: Kenshu Sannohe) to be published this Fall. Now I can matchy with the Himuro Renji one I already have...! The photographer really understands and captures the broad appeal of Yamaguchi Yoshiyuki 💖.

Motomiya Yasukaze was cast in the latest Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio game, Stranger Than Heaven. The digital necromancy of Tupac and Sugawara Bunta feels off to me on a personal level (plus the existing ick of Kagawa stuff from K3). Mostly because I would not want that stuff to happen with me, post-death, but that's just ME...some people are really excited 🥴🤷🏻.

With Sugawara, they're dealing with the family estate and the v/o is by a person who knew Sugawara, so it feels a slight more analogous to "maybe this is like when they make documentaries/biopics of famous people." Tupac's estate is supposedly owned by a music exec........

I was an Odoru Daisousasen (Bayside Shakedown) fan back in the 90s/00s and still can't believe they're making a new movie with Yuji Oda in 2026. 2025 had two Muroi movies too 😩. I wonder if these will get English subs since the international hype era is over.

Photo of some brown tone and green toned fabric rectangles, in the middle of being sewn together to assemble a larger fabric piece

I recently came to the realization that patchworking and comics are similar, in that they both (usually) involve assembling a bunch of polygons and trying to make a bigger picture/story out of them. I sometimes wonder how to mash these two craft interests together, but it would probably consume my life...(the hobbies separately already consume my life...)

I've been reflecting on how I feel the most comfy posting here, because even on fedi I feel like I'm SPAMMING people with my already not particularly-high post frequency?! Though IDK why it makes a difference because I'm still spamming people via RSS here...? Maybe since IDK who is reading here.

I was also thinking about how the average artist feels like making a website is an uphill battle these days, and remembered that I made my first website when I was probably 12/13yo with much less intelligence and resources than what people have today. I wonder if making a website really "did get harder" or have people become more resistant to learning/friction (aka trading convenience and ease in exchange for something unspoken, e.g., data for marketers on social media sites). Not a complete thought and not trying to point fingers...

my knight in shining armour

MKISA's ch. 4 (12 pages) is out!

photo of a test print of MKISA ch.4, which shows panels of Shishido getting off of Tsuruno and walking away to grab something. The page is black and white with screentones and probably has to be reprinted because there are some strange artifacts/patterns showing up.

I wrote an LONG character/tattoo/ship freetalk there, which reminded me of the Major fandom ship post that fiddery made haha. Immediately after posting it I felt like "ugh no more drawing time for a break" haha but I'm already thinking about the next chapter. I put on a bunch of hand jewelry to stop myself, then said jewelry prompt snagged on my loosely woven cotton gauze clothing, so I took a bunch of it off again.

compilation of images showing the same comic page, but in different states of completion: rough, draft, inks, texture and blacks, gray tone, shading, and final with bubbles

Toning and tattoos took 2 weekday nights and 1 weekend day. I've figured out the "look" by now so I can get it done slightly faster than when I first started! I always feel that it's not until I get to the texture/blacks step that my comics feel closer to complete. Sometimes they look really empty without the bubbles, so they're part of the composition from the get-go. This comic has a lot of dramatic back lighting.

Hoping I can get the "last" MKISA chapter 5 done in June, then move on to my well neglected original comic, Stuck in the Middle...BECAUSE...

I have ambitions to apply to exhibit at Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Vancouver Comic Arts Festival, and Prairie Comics Festival for 2027! NO idea if I'd be able to get in nowadays (so many skilled/talented folks), but hopefully having a new book will help my application! Although I'm a nobody in the comic sphere, I hope at least a handful of people will still get my books in the future!

Paralives

I started making a Majima from memory 😂 but then had to stop because I was still working on MKISA ch.4, and i knew this was a gonna be a big time sink that would prevent me from finishing anything. RIP to my life which will be lost to hours in character creation screens for all my favs and OCs...

Music

New to me via Gero: Capretto by Chevon! A lot of their songs have the vibe where I can imagine them as an anime OP/ED.

I can see why Gero and Chevon ended up doing a collab because I feel like they have compatible and some similar musical tendencies (the rhythm, vocal quality with transition between low and high notes, layering between high and low tonal range). Chevon's vids have a lot of artistic production to them (like King Gnu).

I have never been a fan of spring or summer. The bugs and sun are out in full force 🫩. I already have bug bites (yells). It's 26C right now!! NO!!!!!!!

Though it is nice to see some flowers blooming. This year I've haphazardly chucked seeds into my planters and hope some of them survive.

Let the yellow and oranges distract you from the crispy plants in the bg (new cup that I made in a glassblowing workshop)! I'm currently dealing with (likely?) pinched nerve pain in my left neck/arm. My right hand's thumb base is sore (??) maybe from my glassblowing tool use?! Neither are SEVERE pain but still annoying and persistent. The joys of ageing.

OC bday

Best boy Ferris's bday!! Last year drew him wearing yellow hehe. WHAT ABOUT THIS TIME?

digital illustration of a bearded guy carrying a crate of cut flowers, freshly harvested from a flower field. He wears a white undershirt under tan overalls, garden gloves, and a wide brimmed hat hangs from the back of his neck. There are some bees and bugslu flying around him.

feat. Bugslu. This was mostly drawn/painted with a default Krita brush, Bristles-5 Flat.

Hilariously (just to me) I thought "my headcanon is that Ferris's parents own a flower farm" but then I realized this is my own character, so my headcanon = canon...

OC Qs from penbrydd!

What is Ferris most often seen wearing? Are they dressed that way because they like it, or because it's a uniform or status indicator?
Overalls / coveralls because of painting/farming! Also means his pants stay up. Belt under belly sucks!! He often wears full brim hats and handkerchief/towel in back pocket.

What is one thing Ferris wants? Not their greatest desire, but something they'd like.
Ruby pinky signet ring for fashion bling.

What does Ferris believe happens after death?
You die. (IDK)

What is Ferris's favourite piece of clothing?
Thrifted linen button-up shirt with yarn-dyed woven pattern

Has Ferris ever hallucinated? Was it intentional?
Probably because someone offered him stuff and he didn't really question it.

What can always make Ferris laugh?
Videos of cats ambushing other cats.

How does Ferris handle alcohol?
Well, though doesn't necessarily seek it out because of cost.

Website stuffs

I added a page for my old past sewing projects! I recently finished converting everything to use markdown so the formatting is easier for me to deal with between pasting content between Joplin and kiki. I mainly wanted to have LISTS back for formatting/readability purposes. I have not figured out how to get "clean URLs" (later me/never me problem).

dirchansky freetalk button feat. orange moray eel on a spotted purple and black background I made a new button for this freetalk blog! In case you wanna...link to me on your own journal/blog/diary (please upload to your own server)! It's moray eel-inspired, ehehehe. I ended up making a button for HWA too.

MKISA stuffs

Maybe because of moray eel-influence, I decided to adopt the practice of having a circle name again for myself. Looking forward to becoming more confusing and unknown, yahooo! I even started drawing logos for said circle name. It's a bit pointless ✌🏻 but fun.

Reluctant and suspicious internet searches because of MKISA ch4:

  • watching an old man clean his gun collection to understand gun anatomy 1% better
  • browsing concealed knife and gun carry
  • a lot of censored bodies because of tattoo

draft digital drawing showing a panel of Shishido holding a gun

Guns and cars are amongst my top DNW inanimate objects to draw. Their designs usually consistent of a combo of perfect subtle curves and sharp edges that I'll never achieve in drawing.

Digital drawing of the backside of a person with an ukiyo-e inspired bodysuit tattoo that covers their upper arm, shoulder, back, butt, and upper thighs. Central motif is a jumping phoenix/Hōō-like creature paired with paulownia, peonies, waves, sun, and flames.

I could write a lot about this tatt but I'll keep that for the chapter's freetalk later, haha. The primary artistic reference was Isoda Koryusai's work from Edo period. I have committed so many not-really-japanese (wabori)-sins but this is literally just in a few panels of comic, OK!? I'm just a baby!!!!!!!!

I drew some new interior covers, feat. sleepwear and animal plush.

photo of 2 coloured print outs, featuring shishido and tsuruno in sleepwear, next to animal plushies of each other (lion and crane)

From a physical zine design POV, although the two interior cover pages look connected rn, they'll appear separated when the rest of the comic pages are bound in (true to their messed up relationship, which is full of obstacles).

I used my local library branch to test out colour printing!

photo of test prints where the black has swallowed everything

As expected, the colour and tonal range are terrible, but the ink coverage is better than I thought. The library has a giant all-in-one business model Xerox AltaLink C8145. It's $0.50 per colour side on a letter-sized paper (standard copy paper weight), so these costed $3 total (3 double-sided letter sheets); wasn't charged tax.

These pages are already limited palette, so in some ways, I care less about the colour/contrast issues (haha), but the biggest downside is that the duplex printing is not ALIGNED (like my home printer 🫩). So when I fold a paper half, the centre point doesn't line up for the printed front and back sides, which is SUPER ANNOYING (specifically for zines) but also beyond my control because I can't use the typical print dialogue/settings when printing at the library.

This whole ordeal reminded me of why I always stuck to DIY B/W comics/zine...colour printing is 💸 dollar dollar 💸 and you have to factor in annoying things like "is the ink going to spit if I fold this paper in half" (usually yes, esp if it's laser printer and have nearly 100% ink coverage like MKISA). I started looking at colour printers, but also know deep in my heart that I don't make or print enough coloured stuff to justify the maintenance and ink cost. Also most home colour printer reviews don't really talk about how art paper and ink handle folds, since people are mostly doing...prints? Though I guess some are doing greeting cards, but NOT usually using designs with full ink coverage across spines. I always want matte or uncoated, which are less recco-ed for darker prints with high ink coverage (sobs).

Staples costs $0.59/side + tax. Probably similar quality and likely no guarantee of proper printer margins either.

All other local prints would need a bus ride (+$6 round trip plus TIME). My old University-student oriented printer is $0.40/side + tax. At this point it might make more sense to just order online and have things shipped, but trying to explain my partial DIY desires like "please print it like a zine but don't bind it because I'm binding it with my own other papers" is always peculiar and outside of standard offerings.

Though Library might ultimately be fine since this is a niche zine...IDK if anyone beyond me would even want a copy haha. The philosophy of most of my fan zine making is to try to keep the cost as low as possible so I can make these silly things available to ppl for as reasonable cost as possible. MKISA is also free to read online, but the print vers will extra extra.

Editing dialogue

Ch.4 of MKSIA in particular has felt more challenging to edit, dialogue-wise. Probably because the characters themselves are unreliable narrators/unsure/stressed/emotional. I am also a fool and added another 4 pages to this chapter (and another 4 pages to ch.5).

On my first pass, I usually write from my own internal monologue (since that's just easier to get ideas down). Then my dialogue editing involves futzing with parameters for each characters' feels/context, e.g.,

  • tone
  • frame/POV
  • specific wording/vocab
  • cadence (this comes out more in word bubbling for me)
  • etc.

For example:

all roughed up like this / busted up cause of me... / all banged up...

screenshot of a draft comic panel feat. Shishido saying suspicious things to Tsuruno while lifting Tsuruno's head upwards.

I can't stand having my heart broken again. / You're gonna break my heart again.

screenshot of a draft comic panel feat. backshot of Tsuruno, smoking, topless

What can I do to gain your trust again? / How can I get you to trust me again?

screenshot of a draft drawing of a hand grabbing someone else's upper arm above the elbow

The examples all have their own nuances; some imply blame, are more pointed/deliberate, are a bit more formal/casual, solely describe one person's feelings. The possibilities are unlimited! It's hard to say one is better than the other; it all comes down to intentions.

Anatomy of Humiliation: a short and poignant comic (?) about fatphobia by Marcel Shorjian

We Might Have to Get a Little Less Fandom-y: touches on fandom interpretation of entertainment media, and something I've discussed before here, which is the idea of how a lot of readers tend to look to "project" themselves into a piece of work and seek to "relate" to it. I previously mentioned that I don't tend to engage with fiction media with this POV. It's nice to read a more well articulated and informed opinion on this topic. As an "author" I also tend to not label myself or my work, to keep expectations low...

How to be a carnival barker: I know what needs to be done for self-promo but I am...so "bad" at it due to my own reluctance to "play the game"

Blue Box #19: I'm this far in, I guess it's safe to say that while there is absolutely nothing wrong with this series, I guess I don't feel as RIDE OR DIE with any of the characters as I do with other romancey series!

Fool Night #3-7: this got dark really fast...lots of gray area "trolley experiment" situations for the naive simple-minded protag to navigate.

Mr. Villain's Day Off #7: The author keeps hinting at the angsty RANGER lore secret and I need to know what it is

Gokurakugai #4: still distracted by all the hot not-right-in-mind-leggy girls. Tao is boss babe.

Apothecary Diaries #15: I wish this series had a recap/character re-intro at the beginning of each book, since it has been nearly half a year since I read the prev vol. I vaguely remember this Shisho plotline but mostly because this series has too many characters and names...

DanDaDan #18: wow this Unji Zuma sob backstory...

Blue Period #16-17: I really like how this author manages to create connections/realizations between seemingly disparate concepts, for the sake of art. Did not expect Yatora to get into night life, haha.

comic panels from Blue Period, where Yatora's teacher tells him that: being an artist...is one of those jobs that runs on popularight right? And that's why people think it's about reaching a large audience. But it's often a one-to-one thing. Sometimes, just reaching one person is enough.

Me: sending 1 reader of this blog doe eyes of gratitude

comic panel from Blue Period, featuring a miffed looking girl with glasses and long hair tied up, pointing at the viewer, saying: "Why, youuuu!! How many years do you think I've been making doujinshi!! Don't you dare underestimate a person with experience organizing anthologies!!

This could've been a drawing of me in my longhairera. Though the average doujinshi anthology in Western fandom seems to be way more complicated these days, so I don't think I could confidently proclaim this.

Ask and you shall receive ~ my ink stamp collection...

photo of various ink stamps arranged on a brown table top

Most of them are animal-related, hahaha. The self-inking one on the top-right has a bunch of letters and tweezers, since it's one where I can slot in letters of my choosing. I last used it for my URL to stamp on the back of old prints I cut up for upcycle bizcards.

The 2 with knobs were hand-me-downs from an ex-colleague, and pink one doesn't swivel properly anymore and doesn't have years beyond 2023. The White one is really funny because it has a lot of corpo slang on it and it's funny to stamp it all over the place in an exasperated way.

I especially love the chickens stamps from Wonder Pens x Pix Dessine and Flag set from Kori Jirushi (Kim Jim). SOOO CHARMING!!!!!!

I end up being too lazy to use them because I have to pull out the ink stamp pad and those inevitably dry out. Some day I should figure out how to clean stamp surfaces and replenish stamp pads.

photo of all the aforementioned inked stamp impressions on a DIY cardstock notebook cover

Washi tape-wise I feel like I have both a lot and not enough hahaha.

photo of various decorative tapes, washi tapes, and roll-stickers

My sticker collection is out of control. I put the loose flakes into an old biz card holder (from my artist alley days...so many dead sites/disappeared artists, so I chucked many cards out).

Making Zen

I wrapped up my Making Zen projects (masto thread)! I didn't do most of them what was available because of the limited free video release. I watched more than I made. I secretly wished there was a 2x video option...

Apparently there's another Making Zen coming up in September 2026?!

The sewing projects involved a lot of hand sewing (to be on theme) and I finally understand why people use thimbles. Though I'm more of a needle "puller" than "pusher" so I'm not sure how thimbles will work with my grip. Maybe silicone ones? Or I have to change my way of hand sewing?

Though truthfully I should take more breaks and space things out longer. I also feel like I should've used mercerized cotton thread instead of sashiko for easier gliding in some thicker spots, but I used what I had on hand!

photo of a patchwork fabric pouch with embroidery and hinge frame closure, cathedral style pendant, mysterious flower-like fabric things, and a little folded pouch with ceramic dog button and rope closure.

I'm most impressed that a thrifted ceramic dog button I got over a year ago, happened to match the fabric and sashiko thread I had. I love when a plan (accidentally) comes together.

Those who are observant will note that the flower/cathedral ones are in my (current) fav characters' colourway of their outfits! I love stealth fandom-ing!! It's so flexible to turn any project into any colourway to represent your favs (whether it's character, animals, colours, etc.).

I was glad that Rurupoi recced the stamping process video because that was a lot of fun! I want to make more stamps for repeating patterns now! BUT I HAVE TO GO BACK TO COMICS...

MKISA

No update today because I was busy with Making Zen. I'm partway through penciling the next chapter but also went and drew weird bonus content and freetalk (for the print version!).

collage of various black and white drawings of Shishido and Tsuruno

I really like bratty-grumpy-childish-single-feral-braincell version of Shishido that some artists draw. He's probably the only character I've drawn with intentional fangs showing.

It's Alpa's turn, aka FROG TIME!

digital drawing of a cloth-mask wearing character named Alpa, reaching out to a disgruntled-looking frog whilst in a tree

Used a default Krita brush called dry textured creases. Forever making dark pictures HAHA.

OC qs

What does Alpa admire in others?
People/creatures that are good at being social and who are confident!

Is Alpa at peace with who they are? What would they change?
Still doesn't really know who they are (nor do I...)

Does Alpa sing? Are they any good at it?
This is a cursed question. I imagined them to very unpractised at talking, let alone singing. I guess they are maybe good at doing creature/animal sounds/calls, which could be considered making singing (???)

What light level does Alpa prefer to sleep in?
I imagine they're nocturnal, so probably good at sleeping in light?!

How does Alpa most often use expletives?
0%

Is Alpa introverted or extroverted?
By now it's obvious, introverted.

Does Alpa like spicy food?
Yes, bring it on! Though IDK what their mouth looks like, haha.

Reading

The Book of Eels: Our Enduring Fascination with the Most Mysterious Creature in the Natural World
"Reading" but I actually listened to the audio book (translated by Agnes Broomé, narrated by Alex Wyndham) for this while working on a latchhook tapestry. I've been an eel fan for a long time (not as food) but I must admit my eel-feels (this should be an eel zine title) were mostly towards moray eels. BUT now, my brain is packed with so many new european eel, Anguilla anguilla, facts (temporarily). Such mystery and passion. There were really old eels.

ALSO please join me in looking at this wikipedia diagram of the european eel lifecycle, which looks like something I would've drawn (positive). Thank you Salvor.

Cloth and Complicity: Seth Rockman on Plantations, Textiles, and the Art of Weaving: This is an interview (2024) with Seth Rockman, the author of a book that delves into labour and plantation goods in US slavery context. It gets a bit more into the research process: always interesting to learn about various cloth histories...learning how to fabricate "low grade" cloth for enslaved people. I'm also an advocate for "experiential" research methodology (I've done a bit of shadowing, but never as immersive as what traditional ethnographers do). I liked the quote at the end of the interview:

We should start with the premise that it may be very difficult to find ourselves with clean hands under the configuration of the world that we presently inhabit—and then figure out what we want to do about it.

Simply Sewing + Tauko + Peppermint: these are sewing-related magazines at the library. Bless libraries...

Printing with Natural Dyes: a really practical book with general theory/concepts as well as specific application projects, which I think is helpful in case you're not going "all in" on eco dyes and just want to try a more contained, singular new project out with a smaller scale recipe. The newsprint silkscreen looks super interesting! I didn't think that the newsprint cut-outs can stick to the bottom of the screen after 1 round, thus making it possible to do multiple prints (though it's absolutely not infinitely reusable). Something I'll probably re-borrow when I have workspace / wherewithal to get into fabric/paper printing!

Daemons of the shadow realm #6-8: plot thickens! Hana's room full of posters of that Guy made me laugh. Of course there are excellent lessons and floating fish...!

panel from Daemons comic, where the fish daemon is protecting their master from falling roof tiles with a frying pan that's extruding from their mouth

Viel #1-#2: I ended up with the physical copy from the library and got treated to the yellow/white vellum decorative sheet inside. The author's style is well, stylish (mod and high fashion, lots of lovely marks and gestures). The book is full colour and the stories themselves are like micro-vignettes between a girl and guy that just happen to meet and then work with each other. It's very...vibes and slice of life and sort of unspoken ambiguity on purpose. I wonder why they draw a sort of, lightning bolt around the guy all the time, haha. I love the use of tilted lettering that mimics hand lettering and looser stylized art (read more about that from English publisher, Mangasplaining).

photo of the two volumes of Veil by Kotteri! First volume features the female lead wearing a sleeveless blue dress, sitting on a couch. The second volume features the male lead, wearing a suit and also on a couch. The illustrations are connected across the covers.

Such unfortunate placement of library bar code stickers

Fool Night #2: continuing to enjoy this. It's turning into mystery crime intrigue...!

It's a baby opossum! and The life cycle of an opossum: I need more opossum books, there aren't enough. I hope an opossum expert comes to me and asks me to draw an opossum book. The covers are soooo cute but the insides are variable random photo quality and design.

Did you know that 10 opossum babies can fit in a teaspoon???????????????

photo of a Fun Fact about the opossum. A newborn opossum is about as big as a honeybee. Ten newborn opossum could fit in a teaspoon.

I love this detailed clipart bee next to this amorphous undetailed opossum blob and then this variable thick line width measuring spoon.

Brainrot report

Meiji's Poifull: a candy from my childhood that I don't get to see in Canada very often...

Checking out Yamaguchi's dogs and his new hair in Gokudo. Motomiya is also in Gokudo with mirrored hairline and a lot of other Nihon Touitsu guys.

photo of things I got in my online order, which are described in text below...

I got my Nihon Touitsu + Manabe Hiroshi order! I forgot how overly-packaged Japanese stuff is. I can understand bubble wrapping the books but the hand towel REALLY didn't need to be bubble wrapped 😂.

映画氷室蓮司日本統一公式ビジュアルブック / Movie Himuro Renji Nihon Touitsu official visual book: photos and interviews (that I can't read); I appreciate they added bonus Motomiya + Yamaguchi alt clothing shots, probably for the fans, haha. I haven't watched this movie YET...

photo of open book, featuring two photos of Motomiya as Himuro Renji

田村悠人 ISOLATED 邦画 / Tamura Yuto ISOLATED movie DVD: no subs (in either language) but I read that this is mostly a non-stop action flick so there isn't a deep plot. Unfortunately the DVD version doesn't have any specials (the BTS was only for the premium BluRay) so looking at the behind-the-scene crumbs by the photog/cinetog Kenshu Sannohe. Yamaguchi looks way too cool! I want the visual book for this (but I think only a brochure exists and it's sold out now). I sort of had a hunch that my computer's DVDrom could play Japanese region 2 DVDs, and I was correct! Works in the default Linux Mint app too (how wonderous!).

Screenshot of Yamaguchi as Tamura Yuto, side profile and wearing sunglasses, holding up a gun. The image is high contrast and monotone-ish

Can't complain about a non-stop gauntlet of various martial art styles, weapons, and gun fights with guys wearing suits. The electric guitar that kicks in on the dramatic shirt rip tattoo reveal HAHA. Though I do feel bad for this white guy being so typecast with horrible monstrous roaring SFX.

英絵辞典 目から覚える6000単語 / Eie Jiten me kara oboeru rokusen tango me kara oboeru 6000 tango: it's a visual dictionary with English words. I mentioned on Masto~ I grew up with an alt and old version of this book, which I called my magic book. This is the new edition for me to creep. IDK why but I thought it would also have the Japanese words, but it only has the picture + associated English word.

photo of an open book that shows illustrations of Tailor's shop along with number labels and associated english labels to identify items in illustrations

真鍋博 本の本 / Manabe Hiroshi Hon no hon: book that compiles the books that the artist was part of. A lot of interesting styles and composition for when I have to design zine/books in the future. He does really colourful work and sometimes with a constrained palette and with incorporation of illustration, which I'm really into.

Photo of inside of book, showing 5 different covers by Manabe Hiroshi

唐獅子牡丹 手ぬぐい / karajishi botan tenugui: I will just be using this as intended...a hand towel, probably in my kitchen?!
