In my speech, I suggest ways to strengthen the independent element of the House of Lords, broaden expertise, improve regional representation and build greater public trust in politics - including calling for a restraint on prime ministerial appointments of peers. 🧵5/5

There's been talk about rewiring our constitutional arrangements...but any electrician will tell you, if you get your wires crossed, you could be in for a nasty shock. The Lords is a kind of constitutional trip-switch forcing a reset on bad laws. 🧵4/5

Bills routinely reach the Lords in a half-formed state, with large sections undebated by MPs and riddled with flaws which could cause serious damage if they reach the statute book uncorrected. That is where the Lords step in. 🧵3/5

Saddened to hear of Ann Widdecombe's death. She was distinctive and wonderfully unconventional, with iron-clad principles, and brought her own perspective to everything. As a former colleague in government, her colourful individuality will not be forgotten.
