New essay, my attempt to think about early modernity from a North American vantage point but in dialogue with the history of the wider early modern world, plus a reading of fossil fuel modernity as it relates to (well, imposes itself upon) the same landscape. Link below:

If anything To Kill a Mockingbird is a more sanitary version of the history of racism in the South, the actual history is the stuff of utter nightmares

To Kill a Mockingbird was blood libel against the South, where Southerners are depicted as backwards and wanting to convict an innocent man. Maybe thatโ€™s why itโ€™s required reading, because itโ€™s not a particularly interesting or well written book. Itโ€™s mean to instill hate.

Not a single human being in sight- a few cars that presumably have humans in them but encased in steel. The park is empty. Few flowers or gardens. Grass. This is really a sort of necropolitics, a desire to be rid of messy social life, a yearning for the silence of the tomb.

See it's Latin if you want to command demons, Arabic for jinn, Hebrew for angels, Persian for divs, Chinese for dragons, probably like Old Norse or something for ice giants

Why do exorcists use Latin? And why do demons hate it? Itโ€™s not aesthetic. Itโ€™s not nostalgia. Itโ€™s authority. And fallen spirits know exactly what it means. This isnโ€™t superstition. Itโ€™s tradition backed by God's power - a ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฆโœ๏ธ

As @michaelbd pointed out, it's quite something to read stuff like this from leftists celebrating Kirk's assassination and calling by name for the killings of others on the Right, and to know they would celebrate your murder too.

I really do not think that the average American, even the average well educated American, appreciates how incredibly violent and deranged Jim Crow could be at its bleeding edges of enforcement

Guys like Cernovitch cannot conceive of recognizing historical evil without also engaging in collective punishment and assumption; that you can fully recognize the reality of Southern history and not hate the South or Southerners is just beyond them

"Western civilization" insofar as it can be said to appear in the Lord of the Rings is embodied above all by Saruman and his relentless drive for mechanization and state-building, defeated by the indigenous non-human sentient creatures whose habitat he tried to destroy

It's also striking the way in which Cernovich (and he is hardly alone in it, I still catch myself doing it!) elides "white Southerner" with "Southerner" full stop, as if non-white Southerners did not, do not exist or did not matter

I love my natal land, more than I love any other place in this temporal world; the terrible reality of her history, the reality of what *my own ancestors* did and what I carry with me inherited from them does not detract from that love, it gives it direction and meaning

Lynchings were not the main instruments of segregationist violence; they were the most spectacularly violent- by design- instances of the white supremacist system, but there were many, many, many forms of everyday violence that were absolutely ubiquitous

The degree to which so much conservative Christianity is unshaped by any encounter with Christ and bears no traces whatsoever of the Gospels is honestly kind of remarkable; I suspect if proper Paganism ever became truly socially acceptable a lot of these folks would convert
