Jun. 3rd, 2014 11:04 amWondering if I should stick with Gentoo or just switch this machine Debian or something. It always feels like a waste of time sorting things out when portage is bitching, and it's happening way too often these days.
I could just separately build the software I wanted and create dummy packages for them...

Time spent to waste time.
May. 23rd, 2014 12:14 pmThis is something I meant to post a while ago.
I keep my N900 in a pretty bulky case (the hard to find otterbox case). Which makes it incompatible with an attachable keyboard gamepad I've got.
The N900 has support for the PS3 sixaxis/dualshock3 controller, and someone gave me a universal GameKlip mount. I wanted to mount my phone to a PS3 controller without making any mods to the otterbox case (it's already huge).
Using my dremel I cut out a piece of steel from an old docking station. Then shaped, smoothed, and painted it, ending with this:

I used "industrial strength" velcro to attach the steel to the GameKlip. This makes it possible to quickly take it apart for carrying rather than to "permanently attach it" like GameKlip says. I'd also thought of an unusual way to attach the phone to the steel piece. One side is lifted and notched to fit into the speaker cutout in the otterbox case.

On the other side there is a slit for the phone's stand, and I use a strong piece of rubber I'd cut out to hold that in place.

When the phone isn't attached the piece fits very conveniently into the GameKlip.

It works just like I'd hoped and holds the phone securely to the controller. Another great thing is the keyboard can be opened which provides perfect thumb access to the entire keyboard!

Problems:
The whole thing is pretty enormous and not all that pocket-able.
Even though the rubber piece fits firmly into the GameKlip, it's still possible to lose it.
It's too top heavy so it immediately falls back when attached to a controller and set on a surface.
EDIT: MORE

Last N900 stylus post (probably).
Oct. 22nd, 2013 09:41 amWhen I made my pen stylus I knew it was fatally flawed, because it didn't have any way to use ink refills since it actually WAS an ink refill. Despite being used sparingly, it stopped writing! I was hoping it would last much longer...
Enter Stylus Revision THREE or "The last N900 stylus I'll EVER need."

The housing was created from the tube of an empty normal size ink refill.

But now it has a replaceable ink refill!

The stylus tip can also be removed and replaced.

Despite some very tight tolerances I somehow hand drilled the new pen cap nicely.

I wasn't done. I attempted to do the same was the older version of the stylus and proceeded to rip off the old ink tip. Unfortunately, there was still plenty of ink in the tube. Several ink covered fingers later I ended up with another refillable pen stylus.

The smaller ink refills actually have a thicker tip, so I enlarged the hole for the cap. It doesn't look as nice as the last one but gives a satisfying "click" when it's placed. I might also butcher the tip on this one to turn it into something better and replaceable. It never hurts to have a backup.

More boring N900 stuff
Aug. 8th, 2013 07:49 amMy gimp900 is working again (well for now), and the battery lasts over a week. I'm gonna solder-reinforce my good N900's mUSB port. Even though I successfully did it to the gimp900 soon after it became an overheated pile of poo, I think I'll be slightly nervous doing it. However, I've swapped out the entire set of SMD caps in two TurboExpress systems without issue and that was a bit more complex. (I snapped a least a couple of pics when I did the first one of those, I'll edit this post with them if I find them)

Speaking of the N900, last week I had a dream of being checked into a hotel room that was full of fine looking ladies...All of which were N900 aficionados, and strangely one was my girlfriend (NOTE: In reality she doesn't like the N900 and prefers her android powered toy phone).

Better Nokia N900 keyboard layout
Mar. 15th, 2013 04:30 pmMy modified rx-51 as described at the Maemo Wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/Remapping_keyboard
It makes the keyboard work like this:

It's significantly more functional than the original keyboard. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that. :(
