    It was a privilege meeting the Asantehene last week and visiting the impressive museum at the @ManhyiaPalace. The UK and the Ashanti Kingdom share a long history, and it was great to reflect on that during our conversation. I look forward to building on this relationship.

    In #Mekelle today. Met with people displaced by violence from across #Tigray. Heard haunting accounts of rape and murder. Families separated, incl. young children. Free access by humanitarian agencies is critical. @UKinEthiopia calls for investigation of abuses and violations.

    In #Mekelle today. Met with the head of the Transitional Government of #Tigray Dr Mulu Nega. Discussed efforts to restart basic services, conditions needed for elections, investigation of human rights abuses, and free access by humanitarians and journalists.

    Big moment for #Ethiopia: first 2.2 million doses of #Covax-provided Covid vaccines arrived on @flyethiopian in #Addis this morning. Great leadership by @lia_tadesse, @FMoHealth and @UNEthiopia. @UKaid contributed US$760 million to #COVAX. No-one is safe until everyone is safe.

    @UKaid has provided £11.4m in humanitarian support for #Tigray. In #Mekelle today, I saw how our partner @UNICEFEthiopia supports displaced people with water and hygiene. Very touching to hear how the transitional government and the people of Mekelle help those who fled there.

    Improved security and political stability in #Somali region of #Ethiopia allow us to focus more on trade, livelihoods and incomes. Briefed @omer_president on work @UKaid is doing to improve #Berbera corridor. Huge potential gains on both sides of the border.

    The problematic presence of Eritrean troops in #Tigray was raised with me in almost every meeting that I had during my recent visit to #Mekelle. The UK has again called for their withdrawal and welcomes the announcement by @AbiyAhmedAli yesterday.

    Welcome @AbiyAhmedAli announcement of the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from Tigray. We need to see immediate & unconditional removal of troops, hostilities to end and a political solution. Unrestricted humanitarian access is vital, along with accountability for crimes committed.

    Despite challenges of its own, #Ethiopia's generosity to #refugees is impressive. I am pleased to announce an innovative £24m @DFID_UK programme and partnership with @MoF_Ethiopia to support 200,000 refugees and host community members through job and income-generating activities.

    The #C19 crisis comes at a terrible time for #Ethiopia's effort to industrialise - just as @Hawassa_IP and other industrial parks are reaching scale. @DFID_UK will work with @ipdc_ethiopia and @EthioInvestment to do what we can to mitigate the impact and save thousands of jobs.
