The day I found out my mum was an aspiring reggae singer and math whiz who gave all that up because she found God and my dad in her late teens, I cried. She could have been so much more. So much more.

Many Nigerians, especially mothers, become parents and give up their personality to raise kids. Many people never really meet the "person" in their parents. It's a sad reality. I never forget the day my grandma's younger sister was trashing boys in table tennis during lock down.

It's really sad. You take a tiny peek into their past and you see a whole different person that was buried because of marriage. A whole life not lived.

I'd rather she chased her dreams though. I would have found my way here somehow. Or not.

Honestly. I look at the amount of grit that woman has and I just know she would have risen to the very top by sheer force of will if she had followed it up.

First time I experienced this was the day a lecturer was berating a female classmate for asking her a question he dubbed 'silly'. I was curious, and asked him the same question after his tirade. Lo and behold, he answered it calmly. I thought about that incident for a long time.

I remember calling Airtel customer when I first moved back to Nigeria. I was angry and yelling at a female call rep. The call disconnected, and I called back. This time, a man answered. I realised halfway through the conversation that I was now speaking in a calmer tone.

I will never piss on a burning soldier that's for sure. All the PR they do online can't fool me. I have seen them in their element, and they are mindless brutes.

One thing I have inculcated is greeting children that I know and wallahi my hand hasn't withered. Catches them unaware when I first throw that "Nnaa/Nne kee kwanụ." You people are turning into your parents in how you "demand" respect from younger people and that is disgusting.

Why Umuada go dey demand tea and why youths go dey demand beer from a grieving family? Why must a grieving family take time out of their grief to host the village to a feast??? It's not about cost. It's about the culture of expecting to be feted by a family dealing with loss!!

Cos Umuada demanded for tea and bread, and youths demanded for beer, that’s why we won’t hear word. I was waiting for them to say Umuada demanded millions, but no, nothing of such. They didn’t even mention that the church demanded money, but it’s Umuada’s tea that’s an issue.
