The smartphone era has been an extinction level event for hobbies. So many pastimes have disappeared or are in the process of disappearing into the glowing event horizon of the screen

You can see here clearly how work during the industrial age was fundamentally different from today’s work regime Communities like this were dominated by single type enterprises. There was a shared destiny. You could see, viscerally, the step-wise progress of a given project

Commercial aircraft have actually gotten slower over time The Boeing 707 cruised at around 600 mph The modern 787 does ~560 Modern high bypass turbofans (which are very fuel efficient) are the primary culprit. They trade speed somewhat for much lower fuel demand

On paper, Argentina has been an economic basket case for most of the 20th century But if you visit, you don’t really feel this. The culture is wonderful, Buenos Aires is one of the world’s great cities, the food’s exceptional Then I think about the US. Could the US have

Buenos Aires is really just a European city, but better. A genuine Paris/Madrid hybrid with only the upsides: - A masterclass in walkability - Old buildings and old traditions, all preserved - Locals with max passion about their city and country - Uncompromising about steak,

This is a good post, on a topic I return to repeatedly The modern building is better on every relevant dimension - more efficient, commodious, comfortable to work in, secure against fire, rot, mold, safer and more stable for food - than the one on the left The single exception

I once read an interview with a US general concerned that Chinese interest in the far side of the moon reflected a clandestine nuclear testing program, and I thought, ah, the US has tested nuclear devices behind the moon
