Proud (if bizarre) to have been able to vote for myself this morning in Sands! Vote Labour across the country today: keep Reform and the Tories out 🌹

A statement from me as Labour Students Trans Officer on the Shadow Health Secretary's remarks today. The trans community deserves better from Labour.
Wes Streeting’s comments today cross a line: there is no reason whatsoever why trans people should be segregated from others of their gender in a medical setting. When this policy was suggested at last year’s Conservative Party Conference, it was dismissed - along with practically everything else - as unserious culture war nonsense. It’s not like the public are clamouring for this, when people can barely afford to choose between heating and eating. I’m saddened that the Labour Party doesn’t take responsibility for its role in setting the tone of public discourse. Political parties can either help to legitimise narratives, or delegitimise them. The demonisation of the trans community in the media, in policy, and in the streets is a cumulative process, but with very real and immediate effects - not least the sharp increase in anti-trans violence. Our role as the Labour Party is to support and protect minority groups, not to throw them under the bus. I would like to see a clarification...

I’m just so so tired and angry. This is past the point of a sick joke: Labour needs an independent process for dealing with cases of transphobia so our members can (for once) feel safe. My heart breaks for all my trans friends back in Canterbury, I love you 💔

Labour Students stands in complete solidarity with the trans community, and it always will 🏳️‍⚧️✊ We need action on transphobia in @UKLabour and demedicalised self-ID introduced in the first term of a Labour Government. Anything else is a betrayal of the LGBTQ+ community.
A statement from a majority of the National Labour Students Committee.

Labour Students reaffirms its unequivocal support and solidarity with the trans community in light of Keir Starmer's recent use of transphobic dogwhistles and the abandoning of our Party's commitment to self-ID. Trans women are women and trans men are men - any statement to the contrary is transphobia, and completely unacceptable.

The Labour Party and its national leadership should be a champion for LGBTQ+ rights, tackling transphobia within the Party and society. Instead, we see a continued failure of Labour to clamp down on anti-trans hate. This must end. Labour Clubs across the country have affirmed their solidarity with the trans community time and again. We continue to encourage Labour Students members as well as the wider labour movement to affirm support for the trans community and to condemn the leadership's actions…

Continued on next image alt.
Over the next few months, Labour Students is going to make campaigning for anti-transphobia structures in the Party a priority. Labour must have a definition of transphobia with wide support from across the trans community so there is a standard by which cases of transphobia can be judged against.

Moreover, Labour MPs who have consistently espoused anti-trans beliefs should lose the Labour whip - they do not align with our values as the Party of equality. We will also continue to support and work for a full, demedicalised self-ID system of gender recognition.

We will never stop fighting for a world free from transphobia and other forms of
hate.

In solidarity,

Fabiha Askari, Alex Charilaou, Kieron Warren, Moya O’Rourke, Lola Fayokun, Elilee Arulkumar, Joshua Freestone, Chloe Brookes, Ruth Day, Nimah Ogas-Hersi, Molly Bloomfield, Lily Soaper, Eleanor Falshaw, Zac Bates-Fisher, Hareem Ghani, Libs Olley and Cai Parry.

All members of National Labour Students Committee.

So @wesstreeting, how many trans people did you consult on this policy of medical segregation? This is an absolutely disgraceful comment, pandering to a minority of bigots - be in no doubt that trans Labour members will not stand for it. Trans rights are human rights, always 🏳️‍⚧️

It’s disgraceful that Laura Pascal has been reinstated as a Labour candidate. If she’d talked about any other minority group in the way she has about the trans community, she would be expelled. Trans Labour members will continue to fight for our right to exist, and to thrive.

This entire incident has been shocking. @HackneyLabour surely knew about Pascal's views given how open she is about them yet chose to continue with her as a candidate and the statement released is clearly at odds with how she wants to present herself and her politics.

The struggle for trans rights isn’t something you dip in and out of when it suits you. It’s something that’s bloody painful and bloody hard. I cannot tell you how enraged I am when people aren’t there when you need it, but only when it looks good for them.

After this disgusting incident, will @UKLabour continue to allow GB News to have an exhibition stall at Conference in a couple of weeks time? We cannot allow groups like this to propagate their filth at our Party Conference.
