They're comin' home, They're comin' home, They're comin', TLP is comin' home!
And so it's back to East London again for UK exports: 'The London Police,' for their first solo art show in England since 2009.
This time around, the Amsterdam based lads have themed their show around sports and games... And although they have totally mistimed their sterling effort of jumping on the Olympic bandwagon, the Essex born duo have produced a slick show of considered artworks and designer sport products.

CARTRAIN @ Graffik

CARTRAIN: This Way Up
Press Launch Thursday 16th May
Open 17th May - 30th May
GRAFFIK GALLERY
284 Portobello Road, LONDON W10 5TE
Notorious offender of all things art Cartrain returns with a provocative solo show THIS WAY UP. At age 20, Cartrain has been painting his iconic street art on the streets of London since he was 14. His artwork is collected by everyone from the rich & famous to the police officers and judges. In 2008 Damien Hirst attempted to prosecute Cartrain for creating a series of artworks that "infringed" Hirst's copyright. In 2009 Cartrain responded by "borrowing" a packet of pencils from Hirst's "Pharmacy" installation at Tate Britain. Cartrain was later arrested for theft valuing £500,000. His satirical images have been parodied by Royal Mail and influential artists including Mr Brainwash, Gilbert and George, Jamie Reid, and James Cauty. In 2012 Cartrain walked into the House's of Parliament and smoked a spliff during Prime Ministers Questions.
From the east London streets to the markets of Portobello Road Cartrain has left his mark on the city of London. This Way Up is a glimpse into the insights of an urban art legend. Pop culture, conceptual guerrilla performance, and collage based urban memes all play a part in Cartrain's palette. You never know what you expect when Cartrain's is involved.
Cartrain describes his artwork as "random."

Black Books
"In the graffiti underground, Piece Books—or sketch books—have been a secret weapon for the mysterious artists who pioneered the culture back in 1970s New York. Reebok explores this history through the eyes of graffiti legends like Cope 2, Erni "Paze" Vales, West, SP.One, Wane COD, Rime MSK, Chino BYI, Ewok 5MH, PEZ, How and Nosm. "
When Rembrandt went bankrupt in the C17th, one of the things he hid from his creditors was his blackbooks. Interesting to see an artist's sketchbook presented as a new concept or practice. It speaks volumes about the presenters and their targeted audience.

Abner Preis - Superheroes
I picked Abner Preis as an upcoming talent to watch back in 2007, and his name keeps cropping up throughout Amsterdam events blogged here on Blakkbyrd.
Abner on Blakkbyrd
Now he's off to the States with his Superhero Project.
=======================
“Trained as a painter, Abner Preis has been making waves over the past several years. In a three year period, he has been invited as a featured artist to prominent art fairs such as Art Rotterdam, Art Brussels and the Scope Art Fair (Art Basel Miami Beach) as well as to exhibit works in respected cultural institutions and museums like the MU in The Netherlands, the Marta Hereford Museum in Germany and Austria’s Kunsthalle amongst others. The Superhero Project has featured at Brussels Fashion Week, Istanbul Design Week and the Rotterdam International Film Festival, providing a body of work that successfully walks the tightrope between art as activism, fine art, fashion, design and entertainment. Compared to artists as diverse as Joseph Beuys or Charlie Chaplin, Preis builds on the history of art to challenge it, using optimism, joy and imagination as the tools of his tender assault.
“Basically this project is about me going out in the streets dressed up like a Superhero, meeting strangers and asking them; If you had three super powers what would they be? Then I turn them into Superheroes like me.

Interview on Warholean
Warholian had the pleasure of meeting Abner Preis and his Superhero Project at the 2010 Scope fair during Art Basel Week in Miami Florida. At Scope, Abner was asking everyday fair goers to imagine themselves as superheros. His goal: “to surprise, transform and empower people he meets as he travels the world.”
We sat down with Abner to discuss how this project came to be…
1. Tell us the history of “The Superhero Project”, how did you come to start this project?
“I was invited to do a video presentation at a class for severely handicapped people. The teacher invited me to give a talk about my work and discuss ideas about a video project that they had planned to do.
Every child was really handicapped… a class full of Stephen Hawkings, but all were super cool. Their idea for a movie was to make one of the kids a super hero who could fly… a slow motion smile settled on my face… “Fuck it! Why not? Yes, we can all be heroes!”
That’s when I realized my magical equation of “I equals S”.
I = imagination
S=superheroes
If you have Imagination, then you can be an Superhero.
(Incidentally, we still visit the Handicapp class every year, it is still a very special project)”

Sydney’s inner west is uniquely rich in street art and has some of the best examples in Australia. This is despite the fact that many landmark pieces have disappeared due to high-density housing construction and increased renovation of buildings.
Street Art of Sydney’s Inner West a pictorial reference book is a celebration of 30 years of street art and the artists who create it.

Graffiti documentary - London part 1
A unique insight into UK grafitti culture/art. By letting some of the most respected artists speak for themselves, the film explores what drives 'writers' to go to such lengths to get their work out to the public, how it feels to take such risks and ultimately, what grafitti means to each of them.

"The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) and the Diggs Gallery have worked with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the City of Winston-Salem to present the work of street artist Roadsworth. He is the sixth artist in Inside Out: Artists in the Community II, and has drawn inspiration for his paintings from streets and crosswalks on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and the WSSU campus. This project is the latest in Roadsworth's international series of street paintings. In these projects the artist critiques car culture and reinvigorates the pedestrian experience by altering existing street markings to create a humorous array of signs, images and symbols."

Zevs in Hong Kong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8BG8v4sZnk
In the aftermath of street artist Zevs' "liquidation" of Giorgio Armani's store in Central this week, the Frenchman has had to deal with his arrest and subsequent court case in which he pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage.
Representatives of Giorgio Armani demanded nearly HK$6.7 million in damages. They say because they could not remove the paint from the store's facade because of its sandstone nature. Zevs said he deliberately used a water-based paint that ought to have been easily removable. But professional cleaners hired by Armani claim otherwise.
The case has been adjourned till 14th August pending both sides' assessment of the damage. Without prior knowledge to his planned stunt, the Post interviewed Zevs days before the incident and introduced us to some of his previous art work.

Armani claimed first that the cost of damage was HK$6.8mio. The artist was forced to hand over his passport and stay in Hong Kong until August 14th, judgement day. In the meantime ZEVS is trying to clean the wall with the expertise of a company in Denmark with a Karcher and some special chemicals. "

Julius Popp
The brilliant bit.fall by Julius Popp at the Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2008--bit.fall artistically reveals internet-based information generated by a statistics algorithm via controlled drips of water that create a waterfall of words and images.
bit.fall features a horizontal module with computer-controlled valves hung from the ceiling. Water droplets are released at precise times to form predetermined shapes. The result is a word or message that seems to magically rain down from the ceiling and then disappear upon impact with the floor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHMsOwaeOkA
Julius Popp’s work has received numerous international distinctions. His interdisciplinary projects are not only recognized in the art world but also in the field of scientific research. Presently, MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as well as the Fraunhofer Institut in Bonn are studying Julius Popp’s realizations in the laboratory: he developed, as a part of his artistic work, robots that introduced new forms of artificial intelligence.

Space Invader Interview
Video Description:
Incognito French artist, Invader traces the birth of his signature pixelated mosaic style, his invasion of 40 cities worldwide and the concept behind his TOP 10 Rubikscubism exhibit at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery.
About Invader:
Invader’s work illustrates the overwhelming effect technology has had on contemporary culture while also critiquing it, using the ancient and traditional technique of mosaics to simulate digital pixels. Referencing the 1978 Atari video game, the artist began placing mosaics featuring Space Invaders on the streets of Paris in the late 1990s. Joined by Pac Man ghosts and other popular 8-bit characters, the works soon became a familiar sight to encounter in any urban environment. Invader’s usage of tile to create street art, rather than paint or stencil, is not only a unique choice of medium—it also emphasizes his commentary of how digital information networks have affected and transformed our society. Sightings of the work have spread over the last ten years on a global scale as the artist continues invading public spaces across five continents. Currently, Invader’s work can be found on the streets of over forty cities, worldwide. – Via Jonathan LeVine Gallery
About Top 10 Exhibit at Jonathan LeVine Gallery:
Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Top 10, a solo exhibition of new works by the Parisian street artist known as Invader. Returning to the gallery for his first solo show in New York, Top 10 marks a highly anticipated event for this internationally celebrated artist. Known for using mosaic tiles to re-create popular characters from vintage 8-bit video games (such as Space InvadersPac-Man) on the streets of cities around the world, the artist’s individual mosaics are carefully cataloged after placement in context to their surrounding environment. Yet, since the project has grown on a global-scale, each piece also carries considerable significance from a larger perspective—populating what is now a worldwide installation that stretches across the planet. Invader’s mosaics can be found on the streets of over 40 cities, on all five (inhabitable) continents. Like the game, his mission is literally an invasion of (public) space. and
Top 10 introduces a new series of original two and three-dimensional works featuring the artist’s signature pixel-based aesthetic, created in mediums such as mosaic tile and rubik’s cubes, which clearly translate the concept of pixilation (the division of visual information in digital format). Invader is the first artist to bring pixels to life, both in the physical world and in the art world. Echoing the neo-Impressionist painting technique of pointillism, with a contemporary voice, his evolved methods bring the composite image concept into the digital age. The show title Top 10 references popular music, as the artist has selected what he believes are the top ten album covers of his generation as subjects for re-interpretation using his own innovative technique of Rubikcubism. The term Rubikcubism is used to describe an art movement of which Invader is believed to be the originator, using Rubik’s Cubes (a 3-D mechanical puzzle game popular in the 1980’s). This exhibition also includes large-scale mixed-media sculptures in bright primary colors and a video installation of projected time-lapse footage, which reveals the geometric complexity of the artist’s incredible process in creating pieces in this show. – Via Jonathan LeVine Gallery
