To end our unit on force and motion, we had a box car derby. We sent a note home before Thanksgiving Break asking the students to make a box car with a box no bigger than a shoe box and they had to create their own wheels. On the day of the derby we used a piece of wood and the stage to create a ramp for the cars to roll down. The idea was to see whose car could push a wooden block the farthest. The kids had a lot of fun rolling their cars down the ramp even if their car did not push the block the farthest.

We learned about force and motion this week. On Monday we learned about push and pull and created a class double bubble map of what pushes and what pulls and what does both. The kids then made their own Venn diagram. On Tuesday, we went to the science lab and worked at stations where we dropped balls, made domino runs, played with yo-yo, used kinectx to make cars and used homemade pendulums. On Wednesday, we experimented with rolling cars over different surfaces and used a recording sheet to record with surfaces the cars went faster over. On Thursday, we made ramps with clipboards and blocks and rolled cars down them.
