- Enhance ButtonBlockAppender to use __experimentalLabel with 'appender' context - Update default renderToggle in Inserter to support appender labels - Add appender context support to Navigation Link block - Convert all dynamic labels to lowercase for consistency - Maintain backwards compatibility with graceful fallbacks - Add safety checks for string length and null values This allows blocks to provide contextual appender labels like 'Add page' instead of generic 'Add block' by implementing the 'appender' context in their __experimentalLabel function.
- Add tests for ButtonBlockAppender component functionality - Add tests for Inserter defaultRenderToggle appender label logic - Add tests for Navigation Link block labelling functionality - Test appender context, list-view context, and edge cases - Verify lowercase conversion and safety checks - Test integration with Navigation Block DEFAULT_BLOCK - Fix linting errors and improve test structure
These tests only verify basic rendering and don't test any of the new appender label functionality added in this PR. The actual appender label logic is tested in the Inserter component tests.

…sistency Blocks now return the complete display label (e.g. 'Add page') for the appender context, aligning with how __experimentalLabel works elsewhere. The inserter uses the result directly instead of wrapping in sprintf.
Update tests to expect 'Add page' instead of 'Add block' for Navigation and Submenu block appenders following PR #71502.

This may work in English, but it won’t work in many other languages, such as German.

I can also confirm that this won't work in Georgia. It doesn't have letter casing.

That's also an option. The title doesn't need to switch casing. It's a name after all, you don't change casing for Dominik, Dave or George.

So can I confirm that it is not appropriate to lowerCase here? If so that seems a fairly minor change to introduce.
The context is that Design have been requested that we consistently use lowercase for labels like this across the UI. However, if that effort is not appropriate then it needs to be surfaced to avoid compounding the problem across the editor.
Let's see if this works...

Introduces an opt-in mechanism for blocks to customise the appender tooltip label. Blocks that implement
__experimentalLabelwith the new'appender'context can return a custom label (e.g. "Add page") instead of the generic "Add block". Navigation Link is the first block to opt in, resolving the misleading tooltip in the Navigation block.Closes #71946
Why
Some blocks configure a "direct insert" block — when you click the appender, it inserts a specific block immediately rather than opening a block selection dialog. For example, the Navigation block directly inserts a Navigation Link (page variation) on click.
Currently, the appender tooltip always shows "Add block" regardless of what will actually happen. This is misleading in contexts like Navigation where the user isn't choosing a block — they're adding a page link.
How
Design approach
The challenge is that the inserter component needs a human-readable label for the block that will be directly inserted, but it shouldn't need to understand block-specific attributes to derive one. A Navigation Link stores its concept in
attributes.type, but another block might use a completely different attribute structure — the inserter shouldn't contain block-specific logic.This PR extends the existing
__experimentalLabelAPI — which blocks already use to provide context-sensitive labels (e.g., for'list-view') — with a new'appender'context. This keeps the label derivation logic in the block definition where it belongs, and the inserter stays generic.The alternative of adding a
labelfield to thedirectInsertBlockdefinition was considered, but that would have required changes across the block registration pipeline, the store layer, and every place that registers a direct insert block. Using__experimentalLabelavoids all of that — no changes to thedirectInsertBlockAPI, no new registration fields, and blocks opt in individually.Implementation
New
'appender'context for__experimentalLabel— Blocks return the full display label for the appender button. Navigation Link returns a translated "Add page" / "Add post" / "Add category" etc. based onattributes.type. This is consistent with how__experimentalLabelworks in other contexts (e.g.,'list-view'), where the block returns a complete label and the consumer uses it directly.getAppenderLabel()utility — A new function in the inserter that calls__experimentalLabelwith the'appender'context on the direct insert block's type definition. Includes validation (must be a non-empty string, max 50 chars). Returnsnullif the block doesn't opt in.Three-tier label priority in the inserter toggle — The tooltip resolves in order:
