I'm personally happy to merge either this one, or #74784, though I definitely understand @jameskoster has good reasons outlined for why I suspect he'll prefer this one, so I'll defer to him. What do you think? How do you feel about the behavior/code? |

The interaction in this PR feels more natural than #74784 specially, keyboard wise. However, the "modal in the side" pattern introduces two challenges:

Agree, but if we were to go this route, I think of this more as being the same inspector but in an ephemeral/modal mode, which is valid for this context when the button asks to open/close it. Like a side-sheet, that can be pinned (in-editor behavior) or not (modal behavior). |

Additionally I think we'd ideally create a 'side sheet' variation of a
I don't believe the concepts are blurred too much. Inspectors and Stages and Modals are all surfaces as I see it, and the same UI might situationally appear in all of them. Alternatively you might argue this is just a Modal Inspector, similar to what Joen said. Overall this approach makes a lot more sense to me from a UX and a11y perspective, and is more aligned with existing patterns (bulk actions workflow, quick edit in wp-admin). |

Thanks for trying this. After trying a few interactions, I’m not convinced about it. It doesn’t feel matching well with the surfaces introduced in #70913. Even when it feels like a drawer or side modal, I find the current experience smoother in how both the selected elements and the editable fields are side by side. In that same vein, I like how the side surface in #74784 feels similar to the Inspector panel in the Block Editor. We have discussed elsewhere the traits they share, or even that one is a simplified version of the other. But in this case, the panel, although identical, feels different because of its overlapping behavior. I do see a UX win in how the screen reinforces the focus on the panel to edit content and doesn’t break the layout that is beneath, but I miss having the quick access to select/deselect one or more options to edit. And in the future, I don’t see this scaling well for interacting with multiple entries by pressing “shift” or “command/control” keys. |

Asking both technically and in the spirit of iteration: is this a thing we can land, test in the plugin, and then change our minds if it doesn't feel right after a bit of time? Mainly because I think both outlined approaches are better than the present state, so I would love for us to just not get stuck and not ship either. |

Sounds good to me. I've changed the implementation in f4b6843 to ensure it doesn’t affect any existing APIs and leaves us flexibility to change it in the future if needed. My apologies if this has already been discussed, but there's a conflict with the media control: quick-edit-modal-with-media.movI first try to interact with the mouse, and it's obviously impossible; then, for fun, try with the keyboard. |

I did a thorough review and I think this looks good overall code wise, thanks!
Just a few comments:
- We need to address @mcsf's comment for the z-index.
- Small animation issue when closing with
Escape(see the video below) - I agree with your
"modal in the side" patternintegration in Actions API - it's fine in follow up

The most important thing for me though is that we have removed the PostCardPanel which renders the remaining actions of the page, like renaming, order etc.. Is this intentional based on the new designs? I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere.

I'm no longer convinced this needs to happen in the Actions API, that's why I switched the action from modal to callback at f4b6843. This modal in the side pattern may be something we want to incorporate at the site-editor's layout level instead (as an inspector modal). Anyway, this is not something for this PR, where we try to keep our options as much open as possible. |

My main concern in #75173 (review) is that I believe we should render the rest actions. Some of them were migrated as such very deliberately (like order, etc..), instead of being form fields .
I think a good way forward would be to revert the PostCardPanel changes and just not have a close button for this modal. Users can still close it with the Cancel button. That's also related to the above shouldCloseOnEsc, that it should remain true.

I'm following these designs that don't have the actions. Note this modal opens as a result of clicking one action (QuickEdit): it's weird that opens a screen (modal) with the same actions, plus we'd need to figure out how to list all actions but QuickEdit to avoid an inception kind of scenario.
I'll defer to design, but, IMO, it should stay as it is (close button but not actions).
That's also related to the above shouldCloseOnEsc, that it should remain true.
The modal is closed on ESC, and it's also closed upon clicking outside. These are handled by the QuickEditModal and deactivated from the modal because they produced visual glitches (documented here).

Maybe it makes sense to introduce a prop in Modal component to disable this animation when consumers want to implement different animation in/out. What do you think @ciampo ?

I don't think it's terrible in List layout but I agree regular editing makes more sense a the primary action there. |

title was declared here but never in the form, so it was never displayed. It doesn't make sense to bulk editing titles, so it's removed from the new list in QuickEditModal.

I'm not very fond of adding even more props to this component and it feels it tries to do too much. Reading the code though, that's already the case for example with the description below which should be a description prop passed..
I don't want to block this PR because I believe and hope we'll tidy things up with the goal to have the same edit panel in quick edit and the editors.

Yeah, I'm also not super keen on this component. The fact that it is a connected component pushes us to add new props to configure it. An alternative would have been to have a pure (presentational) component and let every consumer pass the data (e.g., that we retrieve via hook). The component is private so we can iterate on it.
