El efecto invernadero del CO₂ es el resultado de su interacción con la radiación infrarroja del espectro electromagnético, la cual, según William Happer y Richard Lindzen, ya se encuentra en gran medida saturada con la concentración actual de CO₂, de aproximadamente 420 partes por millón (ppm). Al quedar muy poca radiación infrarroja sin afectar con la que puedan interactuar las moléculas de CO₂, añadir más de este gas tendría un efecto insignificante y produciría aún menos calentamiento en el futuro.
