Over the next month, I'm travelling 2,000 miles through eight states, and a dozen knife-edge swing counties, ahead of the US election. On a bicycle. I'll be writing extensively about the voters I meet and how small-town America feels on the road. Follow the link in my bio โ˜๏ธ

We may get a new Prime Minister today. But how, I hear you ask, can @RishiSunak unite the Conservatives and reverse a 36-point deficit by 2024? With exquisite timing, @jim_blagden and I have a big report out today for @ukonward, based on a 10k @JLPartnersPolls poll. Thread: 1/14

There are lots of advantages to working in a thinktank, but one of the best is having your work turned into a @jburnmurdoch graph in the @FT. ft.com/content/940323โ€ฆ

It is true that many sectors are currently facing skills shortages. It is not true, as we are often told, that a lack of immigration is the reason. Work visas rose 72% in the year to June. What changed was levels of employer training, which plummeted across all sectors.

Labour on Tuesday: Our fundamental belief is that local leaders with skin in the game know what's best for their communities. Labour on Friday: We're imposing a massive solar farm on good agricultural land at Sunnica that local leaders and communities have repeatedly opposed.

This is a ridiculous, and dangerous, thing for an aspiring Prime Minister to believe. We're involved in multiple armed conflicts. The threat level from terrorism is Substantial. We face regular cyber attacks. Our adversaries do not clock off at 6pm. The PM is always on duty.

I am honoured to have been selected to succeed @Jochurchill_MP as the Conservative candidate for Bury St Edmunds & Stowmarket. I can't wait to continue her work championing West Suffolk Hospital, supporting excellence in our schools, and backing our farmers and businesses.

13/14 Fourth, it means maintaining a socially/culturally conservative stance on issues like crime and immigration to unite the 2019 coalition. When asked if migration has enriched/undermined British culture, voters are split overall. But 75% of constituencies lean "undermined".

Empowering teenagers to be independent and make their own decisions is good parenting, not an issue for social services. Extraordinary example of the kind of safetyism that @JonHaidt has long warned about. thetimes.com/article/7009f5โ€ฆ

7/14 The net effect of the exodus among younger and middle aged voters is profound. The "tipping point" at which you are more likely to vote Conservative than Labour is now 57 years - meaning anyone born after 1965 is more likely to be a Labour voter.

9/14 Second, recognise that the party will only recover if it moves to the middle of the pitch on the economy. Just 17% of British voters are economically right-wing and only 5% are economically *and* socially liberal. The voters Tories have lost are economically interventionist

6/14 Where have the Conservatives lost the most voters? Among precisely the people they were most successful at convincing to vote for them in 2019: - C1/2 voters - 35-54 year olds - Town and village dwellers - Working age, no degree voters (WANDs) - Red Wall voters
