Bento #190 - Ramen soup bento

In this bento: Ramen with nori and lemon balm decoration, hard-boiled egg, strawberries, scallions, cherry tomatoes (or tomato cherries :P?), cucumber, radishes. Piyo Piyo contains instant chicken soup.

New toys! I ordered from Bento & Co. to reward myself for reaching an important goal, and as you can see, I immediately put the stuff to use :). Since Hanako has a bowl for soup I thought it was a nice idea to pack stuff for ramen soup. Alas, Piyo Piyo does not fit inside her, so I had to take it separately.

Also, the chicken soup was a bit bland. I need to find another type of soup - maybe miso soup? I'm not sure why I'm so intimidated by miso soup 0.0 ...

Bento #188 - Sandwich bento

In this bento: Sandwich with ham and cheese, vegetable sticks (cucumber, bell pepper), Easter egg, grapes

Another simple one - I was home late and didn't have time or energy to do much cooking. I only toasted the sandwich in the oven which, in hindsight, didn't do much for it. Toasted sandwiches are just better when they are warm.

Bento #184 - Hearty bento

In this bento: Heart-shaped onigiri with tuna, heart-shaped egg, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, strawberries

One of my rare tries to make a more decorative bento ... Wrapping one of the onigiri in nori was a bit of a tricky affair but it looks kinda neat with the rice peeking out of the nori.

Yes, there's a bit of lettuce again - or rather Chinese cabbage. I still had that left from the weekend and don't know what to do with it, so I might just as well use it in a bento ;).

In this bento: Onigiri with tuna, tamagoyaki, cherry tomatoes, snow peas and orange wedges.

I really have to say I'm disappointed that even with light soy sauce my tamagoyaki always turns out light brown, nowhere as bright yellow as I have seen on other blogs :(. And I also have to admit I'm not a big fan of the taste, too ^^'. So maybe I'll just leave out the soy sauce and sugar in the future - it still looks nice rolled-up like that, so who will care that it's not straight up Japanese :p.

Other than that I'm really a fan of snow peas by now ^^!

Actually, one and a half week in bento - I have a bit of a backlog to catch up.

Bento #163 - Spanish omelette and apple bunnies

Bento #163 - Spanish omelette and apple bunnies

This bento contains: Spanish omelette with potatoes and bell peppers (tortilla), octodogs, cherry tomato and apple bunnies.

Sadly, the tortilla turned out rather bland - which might be due to me forgetting to add salt and pepper ^^'. Plus, the pan I used was too big so that the omelette did not get a grip on the potato and bell pepper. I'll have to experiment with it a bit more - maybe cook the potatoes before a bit, too.

Bento #164 - Rice, chicken nuggets and bell pepper stir-fry

In this bento: Rice with gomashio, chicken nuggets from Kochlöffel, bell pepper and bean sprout stir-fry, blood orange. Tonkatsu sauce in the little green cup.

A lazy bento - the chicken nuggets were bought. Also, I decided that I prefer bell peppers raw ... Ah well.

Bento #167 - Gyros on rice

In this bento: Gyros on rice and cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce and onions, tzatziki, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, orange slices.

The gyros was an experiment - I didn't have a recipe for the marinade but just threw together everything that I thought would fit. It wasn't bad but I think I need some coriander and cumin for the next time, to make it more Arabian in taste.

In this bento: Hua juan, turkey nuggets, kohlrabi-carrot salad, grapes. Tonkatsu sauce in the little container.

Today's bento: Onigiri, bell pepper kinpira, cherry tomatoes and an apple bunny

This bento was so much fail :(. The onigiri were too soggy and basically fell apart, and the kinpira - ugh. I tried it for the first time, after the recipe in the Just Bento Cookbook, and I was already pretty unhappy that it turned out so ugly. In Maki's photo it was so bright and colourful, and mine was just ... brown. I'm not sure if I'm using the wrong soy sauce or if it's something I'm doing wrong. But then I tried it - and I hated the taste T_T. Well, it probably should not have surprised me, seeing that I'm not too fond of soy sauce. It's okay for flavouring in stir-fries and so on or in sauces like teriyaki or mentsuyu but on its own ... Bah.

Well, at least it looks kinda pretty ^^'?

Another week without posting ... So it's time for another summary!

Bento 132 - Rice, turkey and a Mutschel

Image

Monday's bento: Rice, turkey, carrot-kohlrabi salad, a tangerine and a mini Mutschel. The orange bunny container holds a bit of butter for the Mutschel.

A Mutschel, by the way, is a yeast pastry that is unique to my hometown, Reutlingen. They are only available around Epiphany. I missed them a lot the past years when I wasn't at home during the time, and so I decided to make them myself this year. And of course I can't help making miniature versions for bento!

I actually did not eat this bento ... Because when I got on the bus that morning I dropped the box, and it opened and everything scattered all over the steps of the bus :(.

Bento 133 - Rice, salmon and two Mutscheln

Image

Tuesday's bento: Rice, salmon, two Mutscheln, an egg flower and carrot-kohlrabi salad. Bunny container with butter hidden behind the egg flower.

Since I hadn't eaten the bento the day before I made almost the same again. This time I could eat it :p.

+4 )

Bento 134 - De-constructed chicken sandwich

Image

Wednesday's bento: Turkish bread, lettuce, rotisserie chicken, tomato and cucumber slices.

To avoid that the bread got mushy over night (and so it looked prettier) I just put everything in the box separately and then assembled it at meal time. That worked well ^^.

Image

Bento 134 - Yakisoba, Mutscheln and tangerine

Image

Thursday's bento: Yakisoba with bacon and vegetables, two Mutscheln and about one and a half tangerine in slices.

Yakisoba has become such a bento staple for me. It's easy to make, it's tasty even when cold and I also get to have some of it for dinner :p.

Today's bento would be a nightmare for Anya*! It is full of bunnies :D!

It contains rice topped with a cheese bunny and nori bunnies, bunny-shaped egg, a bit of turkey, carrot-kohlrabi salad (what do they need such good eyesight for anyway?!) and usagi ringo (apple bunnies)!

Even longer no bento this time than in my last entry! My camera's battery is dead and I can't find my charger :(. I have nooo idea where it went to!

So, for the time being I am back to using my old camera (after finding its USB cable again - something tells me I really should try and establish something like order in my flat). Ugh, I think the pictures I took with the new one looked so much better ... But bad pictures is better than no pictures, right?

Anyway, on to the bento!
