May This Story...

...never become too familiar. Be amazed this Easter morning.

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been removed from (lifted out of the groove across the entrance of) the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciples, whom Jesus [tenderly] loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have laid Him!"

And they came running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but He did not enter.

Then Simon Peter came up and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there; But the burial napkin which had been around Jesus' head, was not lying with the other linen cloths, but was still rolled up [wrapped round and round] in a place by itself.

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in too; and he saw ans was convinced. And believed.

Then the disciples went back again to their homes.

Mary Magdalene remained standing outside the tomb sobbing. As she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.

Image

And she saw two angels in white sitting there one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

And they said to her, "Woman, why are you sobbing?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have laid Him."

On saying this she turned around and saw Jesus standing there but she did not know [recognize] that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying so? For Whom are you looking?"

Supposing that it was a gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him and I will take Him away."

Jesus said to her, "Mary."

Turing to Him she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!"

John 20:1-16, AMP

Praise our Resurrected Lord. This story has changed my life.

I pray it has changed yours.

He is Risen, indeed.

A Crying Woman On Easter

As a little girl, Easter was a little uncomfortable for me.

First of all, the 1980's was the Era of Awkward Easter Dresses. Stiff and frilly. We were made to wear over-sized hats (which no one really ever wears).

Add to that a corsage. A large Easter Orchid.

(Let me say that a six-year-old needs not to be in such close relations with two large stick pins.)

And new shoes. I would always have on new shoes. Usually white patten. Stiff. And uncomfortable.

In the eighties, you wore pantyhose. I didn't matter if you were six or seventy-six, you wore pantyhose.

But what made me the most uncomfortable about Easter was it was the one time of year that we went to church as a family.

Mom. And Dad. Both.

I remember feeling the pressure of pretending I didn't know how unusual it was that we were going to church as a family.

I was taught to be a very good actress at a very early age.

One Easter in particular, my mother wore a rayon and polyester turquoise dress. Tan hose. Turquoise shoes. An Easter Orchid. And a very large hat.

I have told you before, woman could sing. And there we'd stand, hymnal in hand, and the pastor would ask us to turn to the lovely hymn, "Because He Lives."

One of my favorites of all time.

But it, too, made me a bit uncomfortable.

I couldn't understand why that hymn made mama cry.

She would sing, as loud as her Aretha voice could carry, tears running down her face.

Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

In this memory, mama was about my age now. Mid to late thirties. Two young girls. And hindsight tells me, she was on the brink of a very imminent divorce.

And there they stood together. The one Sunday a year.

So much hope must have encompassed this day.

She knew Jesus held the future. She had no reason to fear. But how hard.

And then one day I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain;
And then, as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory - and I'll know He lives.

Now that she has crossed the river and fought life's war with pain, I wish I could hear her sing these words again.

I wish I could tell her how much healing the Lord has brought to our family. And to my dad.

I wish I could tell her that every word of this hymn is true. Life is so worth living because He lives.

She had no reason to cry.

But she already knows all of that now. She knows He lives.

So, instead, I will tell you.

One day, death will give way to victory. All suffering will cease.

Life is worth living, because He lives.

What would make you cry today? Fear? Change? Loss? Divorce? Suffering?

This too shall pass. Victory is yours. Both in this life and in the one to come.

Because He Lives.

Put your faith in this precious King. Jesus. Who bore the cross. Who became your sin. Who went to hell and ascended to Heaven.

Because of His great love for you.

Friend, life is worth the living, just Because He Lives.

Because He Lives
- Anne Graham Lotz, The Joy of My Heart

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. John 10:11

Real meaning to your life is found in the glorious dawn of God's story, which breaks into full revelation in the Person of Jesus Christ. What an astounding truth! What a life-changing message!

Because He emptied Himself of all but love, you can be filled.

Because His body was broken, your life can be whole.

Because His blood was shed, your sin can be forgiven.

Because He submitted to injustice, you can forgive.

Because He finished His Father's work, your life has worth.

Because He was forsaken, you will never be alone.

Because He was buried, you can be raised.

Because He lives, you don't have to be afraid.

Because He was raised, you can be strong.

Because He reached down to you, you don't have to work your way up to Him.

Because His promises are always true, you can have Hope!

Praise God for just giving us Jesus!

Easter Week Activity: Maundy Thursday

Experience your own Maundy Thursday foot-washing ceremony. Fill a bucket with water. Grab a few towels, gather your family, and share the story found in John 13:1-17. Then take turns washing each other's feet and praying for one another.

Image

Jesus, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin...

Image

...and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Image

Grant asked, "Mom, why would Jesus wash his disciples feet? He was their King. Shouldn't they be washing His feet?"

Peter had a similar question.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not understand now." Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet."

Image

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should do just as I have done to you."

Image

"Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos."

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you. John 13:34

Maundy is derived from the Latin translation of this phrase: Mandatum: A new commandment I give to you.

Maundy Thursday. The day before Good Friday.

A day set apart, to serve.

A day set apart, to love.

Just as He loved and served us.

Image

The boys giggled and truly enjoyed this activity.

But I could see something much deeper.

Unity through servant hood.

An sweet affection for each other.

Brent asked, "Ethan, how did it feel when Grant washed your feet?"

He laughed, "It tickled!"

Brent rephrased, "How did you feel inside your heart?"

He smiled, "Loved."

Easter Week Activity: A Precious Tree (and a winner)

He Himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. 1 Peter 2:24

Activity: "Make an Easter picture tree. Anchor a small branch in a pot. Have your kids look through magazines and cut out images that remind them of Jesus."
- Thriving Family magazine

Image

Examples: A lamp because Jesus is the Light of the World. Or flowers because Jesus is so beautiful. As time went on, this got quite entertaining! "How about a car?! Jesus is the Way!" or "What about sand?! Jesus thinks of us more than all of those grains!" Clever ;)

Glue pictures on card stock or construction paper, attach short pieces of string, and hang the pictures on the branches.

(That's a proud little tree hugger.)
Image

My personal fav... fruit on a vine.

John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

Image

This tree makes me so happy.

Image

Isn't it adorable?

This was a great craft. Fun for the littles, but still thought provoking for older kids.

t brought me so much joy...the boys' minds swirling with thoughts of Jesus. Mmmm.

I'd love to hear what traditions you are doing this Easter! It's almost here!!

Have you tried any of these? Or do you bring out the Resurrection Eggs?! Family dinner? Cookies? A special book? Easter baskets Sunday morning? Card for your mate? Do tell!!

Easter Week Activity: The Bread Of Life

I have good news for you.

Very good news.

Carbs are good.

Very good.

Jesus says, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger..." John 6:35

Today, the boys and I made bread.

Image

A sweet friend is expecting a baby, and who kneads nourishment more than a pregnant woman?

As the boys basted with butter, I asked questions about...whatelse?

Bread.

Image

Why is bread so good for us? Why do we need all these good grains?

Why would Jesus refer to himself as the Bread of Life?

The boys concluded, "Jesus makes our hearts healthy, like bread makes our bodies healthy."

Image

We also read Matthew 26:26.

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."

Jesus' body, broken for us. Thank you, Lord.

The boys also made Easter pictures for our friend and her family.

Grant asked Brent to outline a donkey for Jesus to ride into Jerusalem. "Thanks, Dad!"

Image

I love that my boys not only practiced baking bread and serving others today...

...they learned deep spiritual truths.

Jesus - the Giver and Sustainer of life.

Image

Give us this day our daily bread. Luke 11:3

(p.s. That is one great donkey!)

Easter Week: A Palm Sunday Activity

Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! Psalm 118:25-26

This expression when translated into Greek becomes Hosanna.

"Hosanna! O Save us, Lord!"

This afternoon the boys and I made palm leaves. (Ahem, don't knock my craft abilities.)

Image

As we sat together cutting and clipping, the boys and I discussed the symbolism of this common Easter tradition.

Image

In Jewish culture, a palm branch was a national symbol. By waving this leaf, the people were hailing Jesus as the Davidic king. They quoted the long awaited promise of Psalm 118: 25-26 "O save us, we pray! Give us success!"

Image

"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord."

Image

Tonight at dinner, I chose one little Crenshaw to be in a seat of honor. His path, similar to Jesus', was marked by the Jewish symbol of palm leaves.

We read John 12:12,13...

The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD, even the King of Israel!"

We discussed the importance of this honorable gesture and dreamed: How awesome to have been there that day! Can you imagine how powerful to see this promised King entering into town!

I posed the question:

"If you were there, what would you have cried out to Jesus?"

Grant said, "I would have yelled, 'Hey Jesus! I'm glad your here!'"

Image

Yes. Aren't you glad, too?

Because of Christ's coming, His death and blessed resurrection, we all sit at a place of honor. At the King's table. As His sons. And daughters.

Enjoy your family this Palm Sunday.

Let me know if you do a fun activity!

(The above activity was inspired by Thriving Family magazine.)
