Bootcamp...for my soul

At the YMCA there is a class called Ultimately Fit.

Picture Bootcamp meets Crossfit meets Jillian Michaels.

Intense.

I am amazed by the amount of women and men who show up for this torture...ahem, workout. The house is packed...sweaty people flipping tractor tires, hopping on over-sized boxes, sprinting steep hills and swinging Kettlebells. I love to watch their determination. And ferocity.

They come in as suburban stay-at-home moms and professional business men, and leave as wild animals.

In response to the Lord's unction, I signed off from a Cup of Joe the past five weeks. My thoughts, "Mmmm Lord, just the two of us. Heart to heart talks over coffee, maybe I'll memorize a new passage of scripture. Pray more intentionally for my boys. I can sing little melodies to you in worship and bask in Your presence. It will a little retreat every morning. You and me."

Sounds lovely.

Well.

I would say the past five weeks likened more to Ultimate Fit.

But for my soul.

He's had me turning over large stones inside my heart, revealing hurts and sin left untouched for years. I've hopped over big hurdles, landing some days on my face some days on my feet. Instead of gentle heart to hearts over coffee, it's been more He talks, I listen. Instead of quietly praying over my boys, He has given me a front and center seat into their hearts, all yucky with sin and rebellion. My little men who just need Jesus. Led by a mommy and daddy who just need Jesus, too. Everyday. More Jesus.

I have sang songs to Him. Some days through tears. Some days by obedience. Not always feeling it at first.

And some days not at all.

I wasn't expecting it...this Bootcamp for my soul.

We've worked through...
Money stuff.
Marriage stuff.
Friendship stuff.
Feeling fat stuff.
Failure stuff.
"I'm a bad mommy" stuff.
Boundaries stuff.

Unforgiveness stuff. (Lots of unforgiveness stuff)

And you know what?

I have loved it.

My child, don't make light of the Lord's discipline, and don't give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves...No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. Hebrews 12:5,6 & 11

Discipline (paideuo): to train children; to be instructed or taught or learn; to chastise or castigate with words, to correct; of those who are moulding the character of others by reproof and admonition; as of God - to chasten by the affliction of evils and calamities

Training - He does this. Molds us. Chastens us. Reproves us.

Because He loves us...as children.

So though painful, it is a privilege to undergo His discipline. (Would someone help my boys understand this?!)

And I can see the harvest coming in. His discipline producing pleasing fields of passion and obedience. Favor. Joy. Forgiveness.

Vision.

I went in as a tired suburban mommy - a bit dry and restless.

But I'm coming out transformed and throwin' punches. Fired up. Eager. Raw. Ready. Hungry.

And expectant.

So thank you for checking in and coming back. I pray your Easter Sunday was worshipful and renewing.

Here are my people in their Easter-y attire (as this picture is very reflective of how much Luke loves being in nice clothes. If it doesn't have Thomas the Train on it, he isn't interested. But with much bribing, we managed for a few hours. And if I am being honest, I am elbowing Grant in hopes to stop his impulse to give me bunny ears or make googly eyes. {grin} Just keeping it real.)

Image
Lord, thank you for this sweet Monday. It is a gift. A day that I have looked forward to for five weeks. I lay this blog down at your feet. Use it. It is yours. I am yours. We are yours. It is a privilege to serve you. Show us your Glory today. Even if through discipline and hardship...show us Yourself. Let us be sensitive and aware of Your presence today. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Days 18 & 19: Love Takes a Break

Image
On the weekends, Brent and I try to take a couple of hours apart and alone. A mini getaway. All by ourselves.

He sometimes sips Starbucks and reads a book that has been sitting on his nightstand all week. Or maybe he meanders around Gander Mountain for camping gear. Occasionally, he simply shuts himself in our room and takes a nap.

He allows me a couple of hours to myself, as well. I sometimes go for a walk and call a friend. I may grab a cup of joe and browse through a froo-froo gift shop {with girly breakables and tight corners. A store rowdy boys don't belong} Or, my personal favorite, I sit on the couch, PJ's and book in hand, and I am "off limits" to the boys. Daddy intercepts all questions and needs... Dreamy.

We call this our "Sabbath Time". A couple of hours on Sunday to reflect, rest and recharge. I need Brent to take time off. He needs me to take time off. We love our children better when we take a break. We love each other better when we take a break. This Sabbath Time is important to our family.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Genesis 2:1-3

Days 18 & 19: Love Takes A Break

This weekend love better by taking a break. God has given us a Biblical mandate to do this. Intentionally, enter into a Sabbath rest from all the work you do. Recharge. Refuel. Refresh. Rotate time with your spouse. Allow him a couple of hours today and he can free you up tomorrow. Or maybe you don't need two hours, but only thirty minutes. Do as the Spirit leads you...but try for it. You will love better when you come home...and you will be more lovable.

Dream up your Sabbath Time...share with us what would refresh you this weekend.

Rest...what a paradox.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

ImageRest (anapauō) 1) to cause or permit one to cease from any movement or labour in order to recover and collect his strength 2) to give rest, refresh, to give one's self rest, take rest 3) to keep quiet, of calm and patient expectation

Our culture forks out a ton of money looking for rest. Resorts are built on sandy beaches. College students earn degrees in hopes to help others find rest.

I have about five pair of "comfy" pants. All of them my attempt of beefing up my rest.

And these are all awesome. Don't get me wrong.

But Jesus says,
Save your money. I can give you what no swooshy pant can offer. I can calm you like no resort on the sea. I can soothe your aches and pains even greater than the touch of deep tissue massage.

Come to me and recover. Collect your strength. Refresh in my presence. Be quiet and calm. Wait patiently. And expect from Me....I will deliver rest
.

In coming to Jesus for rest we receive, "a leader we can trust; we no longer have to carry our own load; we receive clear direction for each day’s work; we never again walk alone; we always have One to share our load and give us the strength to bear our burdens; we can be confident of success and productivity; and we enjoy the delight of pleasing God, glorifying Him, and gaining eternal rewards." - Gothard

Today, I am physically tired (I just woke up - uh oh.). And my to-do list is off-the-charts. But still, I woke with peace. And rest.

It will all get done.

Oh, the paradox of finding rest in Christ...I can still be busy yet refreshed. I may be tired yet rested. I walk through extreme hardship...and have peace.

Occurrences only a Living God can deliver, wouldn't you say?

Take a minute. Breathe deeply. Give it all to Him. The worry. Your to-do list. All of the projects and appointments. Your tension and stress. Give it away. Jesus wants all of it.

And receive your rest. Now.

Finding Rest...Step One

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Image This week has been full of heavy.

Do you ever have weeks full of heavy? Heavy work? Heavy worry? Heavy choices?

On Monday, I woke with Matthew 11:28 stirring my heart. Jesus' plea, bidding me come and find rest.

And my response..."How Jesus, how?"

This morning, I woke with His word in Matthew ringing in the new day. Yet again.

Come to me.

Step one in finding rest: Come.

The word used here in Matthew is not a gentle suggestion to "make your way around to Him if you get the chance."

No. This word is full of action. And translates "Come NOW."

This verb, come, is intensely present.

Come, now.

A command, given us by Jesus...

Come now to me. Bring me your heavy.

My load is easy. My burden is light
.

Jesus, Tell Me How To Rest.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Do you know what to do with this verse?

Seriously. Jesus is offering us to come and find rest in Him. Do we know how to rest anymore?

Image I don't know about you but rest makes me feel LAZY. Here's an equation...

Becky + Resting = Something isn't getting done

The Type A++ in me rebels against rest.

All this springs up in me from a long night's sleep. I rarely get a great night's sleep. But this morning I woke very refreshed and, well, rested.

Pouring my coffee, I could hear Jesus plea in Matthew 11:28. His Word quietly speaking to my soul.

Come to me....and I will give you rest.

But how, Jesus? Does that mean sleeping? Does that me slowing down? Does that mean changing nothing - only my focus?

Do you know how to respond to Jesus' invitation? Come to me. I will give you rest.

Ponder that this morning. Give me your thoughts.

We'll look deeper next time.

Reflecting with the Little Brown Journal

ImageI love the hungry white pages of a brand new journal. Each page ready for the strike of an eager pen. As of this week, my little brown book has officially retired. It's pages maxed with messages from my pastor, quotes from my mentor, notes from books I've read, prayers I've offered to the Lord, correction He has brought me in my sin and Scripture He has whispered in the hush of our time together.

Re-flect \ri-ˈflekt\ : to think quietly and calmly

This morning I want to reflect with the little brown journal. Sitting quietly before the Lord. Turning each page of His faithfulness to me. Remembering the goodness of this year past. The hardships. The joys. Join me as I highlight and reflect on a few one-liners from little brown journal...

* Yesterday it was very clear to me...apart from Christ I can do nothing. NOTHING.

* Refreshment is found in the presence of God.

* "In a hopeless world - hope is powerful. In a truthless world - grace is powerful." -Pastor Dunn
* "If you carry the Word in your heart during times of trouble then His Word will carry you." -D. Barnes

* "The only way you can make little of yourself is to make much of someone else." -Piper

* How do we deal with Pride? We continually deflect and point to Christ.

* You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness in joy. Psalm 16:11 - JOY come from His presence!

* Rest is a result of discipline. Choose to Trust God. Rest is found here.

* "You have to fight for your enjoyment of the Lord." -J. Newman

* "The Devil works out of a position of pride. The Lord works out of a position of humility." -D. Barnes

* "The reward of seeking God is God. He is the reward." -Pastor Dunn

* In the Kingdom of God we either move forward or backwards. We never stand still.

* "Love never fails. Just love." -D. Barnes

* "Faith comes by hearing. Using what you've heard increases your faith. We must do what we hear from God." -Pastor King

* Don't be a child of Israel who complains. Crucify yourself, Becky. Be thankful.

* Don't look to people for my supply - look to God. Expect everything from Him.

* "If you suffer any want, it is your own fault." -Spurgeon

* "When a tide of passion or a surge of anger is felt, it must be dealt with as the alien intruder it really is and turned out of the house. It has no right to be there at all...let alone give orders." -Nasser

* Christians must take severe measures in dealing with sin.

* God's Word isn't the fun news it's the Good News. And we can't realize how good it is until we see how bad we are. This realization will always bring forth change.

* "Be well trained with the weapons of God (Eph 6). Know your covenant. Understand your authority and agreement. Jesus' death and suffering are not in vain. Honor the price paid." -D. Barnes

* Lord, ignite in me fresh passion. Let us pursue intimacy. Romance me, Lord. Word of God speak. Fill my heart with Your Word. I give myself to you as a living sacrifice. Holy and Acceptable. My spiritual act of worship. Amen.

Do you have any one-liners today? Do share. I'd love to reflect with you.

I also did a similar post with my Little Red Journal. I love looking back over what the Lord has done. He is so good.

How Do We Find Balance?

I got a voicemail the other day from one of my dearest friends. She lives in Florida and was heading into town when she called. I want you to hear/read this. She said (hold on - listening to her message and typing quick!...)

"Hey Becky, Becky! Hey sweet friend! I just read your
One Thing post on my phone...it really struck a cord with me based on today. I got up at 5:58am. I didn't get all of us ready and out of the house until about 2 o'clock. My question is ... when your working as hard as you possibly can do you just stop and say enough is enough? - I need to go be with Jesus? Do you just not do the work? Do I just stop doing what I'm doing? What do I do? What do you do? What should that actually look like? I know I need do the work and serve my family. But I know I need be with Jesus, too. I guess I'm wondering... How do I do both at the same time? When it's crunch time, ya know? When the rubber meets the road? OK. Call me back. Love you!"

Oh sweet friend. Your message sits at the heart of this series -
At The Feet of Jesus. Aren't we all wondering the answer to the questions in her voicemail? How do we live at the feet of Jesus in November 2011? What does that look like? How do we make it all happen? - all the chores? The yard work? Paying bills? Calling your grandma? Choosing meaningful Christmas gifts? Grocery shopping? Making beds? Attending school functions? Helping kids with homework? Serving in the classroom? Driving kids to practice? Keeping your boss happy? Oh...and eating balanced meals. Cooking balanced meals for your family? Making balanced meals for friends with new babies? Exercising? Maintaining healthy friendships? Creating lasting memories for your children? Oh, and your husband (or wife)!? Pursuing your mate and loving them well.

Where does Jesus fit into all of this? And resting at His feet!?

Great question.

There must be practical ways to intentionally sit at the feet of Jesus, yes. And we will discuss some of those. But here is what I personally try try try to remember...I need to not try and fit God in to the balance of my life. He isn't Someone to be balanced...He is the High Wire. He holds everything together. He is the One who is holding me up. He gives me a place to stand. I wouldn't have one thing to be balancing if it weren't for Him - the giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). He is it. He isn't to be balanced in my life - He is to be the King of it.

Mary...sat at the Lord's feet and listened to His teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. Luke 10:39,40

You know one thing that strikes me about this whole story? Picture this with me...Jesus was reclining at the table in Martha and Mary's home. He was visiting with them both. Every word from his lips potent with life-altering truth. Mary was at Jesus feet, listening. Martha was in the kitchen, distracted. IF MARTHA WOULD HAVE SETTLED HERSELF DOWN,
SHE TOO COULD HAVE LISTENED TO WHAT JESUS HAD TO SAY.
We aren't talking about big houses here. This was most likely one big open room.
Martha very well could have CHOSEN to sit at Jesus feet...while she prepared the meal.

My Bible footnote says this, sitting at the feet of Jesus is "a disciples proper place." As a follower of Christ this is the position we are to take in life...at the feet of Jesus. But look here...In the Greek the word for feet is pous and is used here as a metaphor for disciples listening to their teacher's instruction.

So for us, today, November 23, 2011, this is what it means to sit at the feet of Jesus...to listen to His teaching and instruction.

Does this mean we sit in a chair at the kitchen table with a large cup of water, two cups of coffee, an Ipod and a Bible? Yes.

Does this mean while we mash potatoes over a hot stove we listen to a sermon that we DVR'd from last Sunday? Or download on your computer? Yes.

Does this mean we meditate on a verse while we drive to work in the mornings? Yes.

Does this mean that we pay attention to our own hearts as we read the little devotional book to our children at bedtime? Yes.

Does this mean that while we scurry to get out of town for a holiday trip to see family that we are mindful that a Living God watches over us and is our help - even in the little things? Yes.

Does this mean that we get on our knees before we go to bed and talk to the Lord about our day, confessing sin and entering into His sweet presence? Yes.

A disciples proper place...at Jesus' feet. Choosing His teaching over the distraction of the world. I like it.

And we said on Saturday...it is a day to day, second by second choice. And this choice is in fierce competition with "much serving."

But one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will never be taken away from her. Luke 10:42

In light of Thanksgiving, I get tickled to think that Jesus is the only Bread where we don't need to watch our portion size. He is the good portion. Gobble Him up this Thanksgiving. No portion control necessary.

Sit at His feet, dear disciple. Even in the hustle. For it is our proper place.

Image
And Happy Thanksgiving from my home to yours. (I can't get my third to retire his Halloween costume. Oh well.) Love to you all...

One Necessary Thing for the Holidays {II}

Imagine yourself standing in a long checkout line at Target. To pass the time you begin to browse the magazines. You have no children with you, the nanny has them all at home practicing violin (hey – this is fiction…let’s make it good) so you grab a “grown-up” candy bar to share with absolutely no one.

You notice that headlining the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine reads this tagline, “The One Thing Necessary For Everything You’ll Ever Need.”

Hmmm. What in the world would that be? Quite a lofty statement, isn’t it? Who has the authority to say such a thing?

Well, unfortunately for Cosmo, that one thing has already been determined. The Word is already out – about 2000 years ago actually.

So instead of thumbing the magazine to page 103 to read more, simply flip to Luke 10:41, 42 with me this morning.

Martha, Martha you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41a, 42

Last post we asked of Mary, “Tell us Mary. What is this one thing that will never be taken from you? What drove you to the floor that evening at dinner. What had you figured out that Martha had not?”

Today, we get our answer. Stick with me as we break this down.

One Thing (heis) : that one which is required to be singled out from a certain number

The “one thing that is necessary” must become uncommon from the number of other things buying for our attention. The One Thing is to be “singled out.” Given special attention. Set apart as other.

Necessary (chreia) : to supply what is absolutely necessary for life; for the edification of the soul, of which this is special need. (read that again)

Friend, if we take it all away - Every possession we own, every dollar we make, every relationship we have, every success we achieve, every plan on your calendar, the upcoming holiday preparation...take it all away and we are left with our longing souls and a satisfying Savior. He is the One. Nothing else will do. Mary understood that Jesus was absolutely necessary for her life. He edified her soul. He met all of the special needs within her.

Mary has chosen the good portion. V 42

Our life is simply a conglomeration of the choices we make. Little bitty “what’s for dinner” choices up to the big “who will we marry” choices. We are given the freedom of choice all of the time.

This story of Mary and Martha is not just a story about busy Martha in the kitchen. This story is about the contrast of choice.

Chosen (eklegomai) to pick out for one’s self.

Martha and Mary both had a choice to make. Jesus was with them both. He did not come more in favor of Mary. He didn’t come to see only her. Mary had to make a conscious choice to sit at his feet. Martha could have chosen the same.

Does this mean that Mary is better that Martha? No. Martha could have still worked in the kitchen and her choice could still have been to rest in Jesus. The picture portrayed of Martha and Mary is a representation of the heart choices we all make. Martha’s service to Jesus was not a bad thing. We are called to serve others. And we are also called to sit at the feet of Jesus.

This passage is not about Martha getting “caught up in the preparations of a meal. It is about choosing between what is good and what is better.” –Bible Gateway.

Jesus words to Martha are not condemning or unkind. He is compassionate to our sweet Martha, Martha.

He didn’t condemn Martha. He commended Mary.

Mary has chosen the good portion. V. 42

Good: Insures salvation to him who choses it.

The definition of good is significantly more poignant that our flippant use of the word. Good, as used here is to define the good choice of salvation. Do you see the word “choice” again?

Portion: an assigned part or provision.

Don't miss this...Jesus Himself is our assigned provision. The God Head provided us a Savior from the throne of Heaven. He came and assigned himself, meeting the demands and longings of our souls. He is the One Thing. Jesus. Our cup and portion forever. Psalm 16:5
Yes, he is our assigned good portion. He will never be taken away from us. But we must choose Him. Initially as our Savior. And every moment after that.

Like Mary, we must learn to rest at the feet of Jesus. Even if we are scurrying in the kitchen, filing papers at work, loading a dishwasher, sitting in carpool, wrapping Chritmas gifts, carving a turkey…our heart can still rest at the feet of Jesus. We can still enjoy his presence. We can still offer praise to His name - giving thanks to the fulfillment of our soul. We can still choose the good portion – every second of the day.

Will you choose Him today?

He is the One. The One Thing Necessary.

When Things Are Changing

Immutable: (def) not capable of or susceptible to change

I must confess, "immutable" is not a word in my everyday lingo. And I suppose it is not a common word because it is not a common concept. Can you think of many things in your life that are not capable to change?

I can't.

My family is in the thick of transition right now.

Are you in a season of change?

The other night a couple came over to buy our nursery furniture. I posted it on Craigslist and within days it sold. The sweetest couple came out. First baby. Young. Hard-working and a bit overwhelmed. I could tell. I stood and listened as they processed where they were going to put all of this new baby furniture when they got home. They weren't quite ready for it all, but wanted to grab a good deal. Things were changing quickly for them. And it was causing them stress.

I don't know if they were Christians or not, but I wanted to hug her (and lay hands on her belly - grin) and tell her that even though all around her is changing, God is always the same. Don't fret. Be anxious for nothing. He is constant.

I read this yesterday and it encouraged my socks off. Sip your coffee and ponder this magnificent attribute of your immutable God...

"IMMUTABILITY is one of the Divine perfections which is not sufficiently pondered. It is one of the excellencies of the Creator which distinguishes Him from all His creatures. God is perpetually the same: subject to no change in His being, attributes, or determinations. Therefore God is compared to a rock (Deut 32:4, etc.) which remains immovable, when the entire ocean surrounding it is continually in a fluctuating state; even so, though all creatures are subject to change, God is immutable. Because God has no beginning and no ending, He can know no change. He is everlastingly 'the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning' (Jam 1:17)." - A. Pink

Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any. Isaiah 44:8

This morning, make your bed on the comfort of your Rock.

A Taste of Heaven

Some would think that a house full of women, closed in confined spaces for a full weekend might mean trouble. Conflict. Comparison. Catty-ness. Cruelty. And they might be right if watching some reality show on Bravo.

But, put thirty or more women, Jesus-lovin' women, in a house together. One full weekend. And what do you get?

Heaven.

Just a taste. But Heaven still.

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like‑minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Philippians 2:1&2

Image

It is amazing how all these women (some not pictured because they had to leave early), can come from their different lives, different homes, different families, and drive up in different cars, and leave, two days later, all of the same spirit and accord. Like‑minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Sisters in Christ Jesus.

A true family. An undeniable spirit of sisterhood that can only be explained in the things of God.

The Lord took us all, gently by our hands, and ushered us into His Presence. His Word, moving us into His rest, into deep refreshment, led to repentance and longing to remain in Him.

This morning the only way I can say it is....It was the bomb.

How's that for poetic?

Thank you PepMoms, for having me.

And as Andrea Engle prayed...there really are just "no words."

Love you all.

He Makes Beautiful Things

To all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of despair. For the LORD has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3

God makes beauty from all of our ashes: the dust and ruin of our brokenness. The pain of our hurting marriages; the mourning that comes from deep loss.

God has the power and desire to give us a heart of praise in place of a spirit of despair.

He makes Beautiful Things out of us.

Behold, I am making all things new. Revelation 21:5

Reflect on this life-changing truth as you enjoy this powerful song today, Beautiful Things. I envision us all, closing our eyes in worship together this morning, lifting our hearts to the God of miracles.

Let us surrender this morning....all of our ugly for His beauty.

**********************************************************************
Tomorrow, please be sure to check back. I will be giving away a potentially marriage changing book by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs titled Love and Respect for a Lifetime. Oh, the depth of truth this book offers.

"Women absolutely need love. Men absolutely need respect. It's as simple and as complicated as that." - Eggerichs

Wow.

Come back tomorrow to hear more and enter to win a copy. How fun!

Also, completely unrelated to anything, are you (ladies) in need of a weekend away in the Smokey Mountains? A couple of days to rest, laugh, cry :), enjoy Christian fellowship and feed on the Word of God? Well, if so, you might be interested in this extended invitation from a local Mom's ministry here in Knoxville:

The weekend of February 18-20, 2011 the PEP Moms ministry of Cedar Springs will be gathering at the lovely River Lodge in Pigeon Forge for our annual retreat. Our speaker this year is Becky Crenshaw who writes a local blog which many women in Knoxville and around the country follow. If you have never read Becky's blog, it is deep and soul-nourishing- definitely worth checking out! Becky will be speaking from Acts 3:19 in a series of talks titled "That Times of Refreshing May Come." We have a limited number of space available for this great opportunity to get away, get refreshed and enjoy sweet fellowship. There are two options: attending the entire weekend ($100) or attending Saturday only ($30). There will be some women attending who are not a part of the PEP Moms ministry or have been part of the group in the past-- This is an open retreat and all are welcome! Find further information by clicking here. If you know of someone who needs to be a part of this retreat... please feel free to bring a friend, sister, neighbor, co-worker, etc!
***********************************************************************
A word from Becky:

Lord, what does refreshment in Your presence look like? How do we rest with children at our legs, begging for waffles. When our kids won't listen and we hear more "No's" than "Thank You's" on any given day? Where is that refreshing that comes from Your Holy Spirit (Acts 3:19)? What does that look like for us - thirty-something and several kids deep?? Will you show us, Father?

Will you, Lord Jesus, meet us - hungry mother's in need of rest, in need of soul-deep hugs, fellowship and refreshment that only Your presence can provide? Meet us, Lord. February 18-20th. We ask you to come. Move. And change our lives.

In Jesus Name. Amen.

Ladies, words do no justice to my excitement and anticipation of what will happen at Pep Moms Retreat this year. He is so good and so ready to touch us. He will teach us, in our time together, how to enter into His presence on a daily, moment to moment basis and receive refreshment from Him alone. By His Word, let us learn how to come to Him, all of us who are weary and burdened, and receive rest for our souls. Let us throw off our yokes and trade in for His - a yoke that is easy and light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Oh Hallelujah! Will you come and enter into His rest? Join us in study and fellowship as we receive refreshment for our souls.

Be Blessed,
Becky Crenshaw
***************************************************************************
Many of you have joined us on retreats in the past and know how wonderful a time it is. We would LOVE to have you for the weekend or for the day on Saturday!

This is the perfect "GIRL'S WEEKEND or GIRL'S DAY OUT!" Come be spoiled, recharge your battery, and best of all get reconnected with God!

Many blessings,
Monica and Andrea
Co-Directors

Imagine....a weekend away...and God making Beautiful Things out of us. Mmm.

If this sparks something in you, I encourage you to pray about it...

Cloudy with a 100% Chance of Jesus

In East Tennessee, nothing creates a buzz quicker than the four-letter "S" word.

You know the word.

S-N-O-W

At its utterance, this town immediately heads to Wal-mart, the salt trucks pull out and schools begin to cancel. Often times before the first flake has fallen. (Knoxvillians - isn't it so true?!)

Well, with one exception: my running partner, Jody. She is from Canada. And she makes me run...IN the snow. I guess that's what I get for having a Canadian running partner.

Anyway, the other night was no different. The family and I were at the mall and I over heard a conversation:

"Yeah, they are predicitng 2-5 inches in the valley. It will start snowing tomorrow and snow through Tuesday."

Wha -wha -what?! Two to 5 inches?! In these parts that translates to 12-15 inches.

My first thought. Chili.

I looked to Brent. "We need to go to Wal-mart. We are low on a few things and I really want to make chili."

The boys and I start to dream....

"Let's get out all of our board games and stay in our PJs the whole day. I can put chili in the crock pot and we'll make snow cream and hot chocolate!!"

So much anticipation.

So much excitement
.

I heart snow.

Image

Anyway, this look is only appropriate when it snows: Bathrobe. Pajama pants. And Polka-dot galoshes. Yes, these are really my feet :)

Snow shuts down life as we know it. I am forced, so to speak, to enjoy a little rest. Play with my boys in the floor. Play games, make crafts and cookies from scratch. Oh snow...please come quickly.

But in the midst of all the weather predictions, all the hustle, bustle and anticipation, I begin to think of another prediction.

An inevitable prediction. Not a 60% chance. Not even a 90% chance.

The 100% chance prediction made in 2 Peter 3:8-11a

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.

Wow.

What if the weather man came on the news and said, "Tomorrow, we'll have cloudy skies and a high of 45. Then on Wednesday Jesus is coming. Grace and peace be with you all. Back to you, Russell."

What buzz would that bring?! Whoa.

I'll tell you this...I wouldn't be heading to Wal-mart.

But isn't this what Peter is saying? It is a similar translation. "People! This will happen. Let us live everyday like it could be today. Get your stuff together. Live holy lives. And look forward to His coming."

But, to be point-blank honest...I rarely think about this 100% chance. I go about my life, living as if this prediction will not be in my lifetime.

How differently would I live if this reality rested on the forefront of my thinking?

How differently would I treat others? How much more would I be in the Word? What would my prayer look like then? How small would my "problems" seem? How much more would I play in the floor with my boys. Read? Rest?

My perspective would change. On everything.

Oh, sweet Jesus, forgive me for not adhering to this warning.

I want to have my pantry stocked, you know what I mean? I don't want to be scrambling around looking for my chili ingredients.

I want bow before Him and say, "Oh, Lord. I've been waiting. Let's go."

As we watch for the snow, let it be a reminder of what we are really watching for...or rather for whom we are watching.

Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

"Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.

Protection No Pistol Can Offer

I grew up in East Tennessee.

A little town on the outskirts of Knoxville. My sister, my mom and me. My grandmother lived next door. Mom and Dad had divorced. Papaw died when I was three.

Four females. In the back roads of Tennessee.

One night I woke to my mother standing beside my bedroom window. Looking through white shears. The house was dark.

She held Papaw's pistol.

"Mama, what are..."

"Shhh."

There was one street light on our dead end street. Allowing a faint glow on our asphalt driveway.

Image

I heard a heavy car door slam.

Men.

Sneaking in our driveway in the middle of the night. Stealing from our woodpile.

I remember thinking, "I bet mom is so mad they are stealing our wood."

Now, I know.

She wasn't protecting our woodpile.

She was protecting her babies.

Mom was a big lady. Strong. Tall. Beautiful.

But deep in the lines of her smile, there was fear. The weight of protecting two little girls.

I'm guessing she felt very exposed in a world of violence, rape, theft and murder.

Always on alert.

I wonder if she ever felt at ease.

Now that I am married, one of the sweetest luxuries is feeling protected.

If I hear a bump in the night, I wake Brent. If I feel uneasy, he goes in. Ready. On alert.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in the act of adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say." John 8:3-6.

This adulteress woman. Exposed.

No one to protect her.

Would Jesus?

Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If anyone of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. John 8:7

Writing on the ground? I am going to ask him about this one day.

But whatever he wrote, the men started to file out. One by one. Leaving the woman to Jesus.

Alone.

Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

"No one, sir," she said.

"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8:10,11

She was bare, and possibly physically naked.

But He covered her.

With grace.

The Word of God made flesh defended this adulteress.

When Jesus spoke to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

Light:
(phōs) The light by which true life is gained. That which is exposed to the view of all, openly, publicly.

This woman was exposed publicly to the view of all. And there gained true life.

God stands at our bedroom window. Looking through the shears. Waiting and watching. Ready to defend. Always on alert.

We can rest in this.

Go back to sleep, weary soul.

This makes me swoon over my God today. In Christ alone, I experience 100% protection.

No one else can offer this.

Not my mother. Or Papaw's pistol.

Not even Brent.

God is my refuge.

He is my Shield. My Protection.

He defended me on the Cross.

And he defends me still.

We can experience rest today.

Guarded by the Most High.

And While You're Waiting...

Image
Waiting.

I am not a woman who is naturally inclined to wait.
My daddy says I shot out of the womb wondering what we were going to do next.
Let's get movin'.

We live in a culture that nurtures our natural tendency for instant gratification.

Fast food. High speed Internet. 70 MPH Interstates. Books on line. TV On Demand. Iphones. Online shopping. Overnight shipping. One day surgery. One minute clinics.

Even a target associate will help you in less than 60 seconds.

However, we do still have call waiting. But you better hurry up and click over. Or I'll hang up.
I don't want to wait too long.

But what happens when we don't have a choice? We have to wait - On water to boil. On a red light to change. On a test result. On the market to improve. On an interview call back. On an orphan overseas. On our soul mate.

The word WAIT occurs 101 times in the Bible.
The word WAITING 21 times.
The word WAITED 35.

Lots and lots of waiting.

But why? Couldn't the Lord just say the word and make it happen? Why wait? He is All Powerful, right??

Right.
But what happens when we wait? What is He trying to accomplish?

Simply speaking, maybe God wants us to appreciate what He gives us.

Christmas morning, we appreciate our gifts all the more because we asked for them, looked forward to them and waited.

Last year, Grant asked EVERYDAY for two months for the LEGO Star Wars Republic Attack Shuttle. E v e r y d a y. If I went out and bought it for him on any random Monday, the gift would have been common. But, no, Grant needed to wait for that special Christmas morning.

What did he learn in the wait? Patience. Endurance. Persistence.

Grant learned that he could trust me to listen to his request.

Waiting builds trust. Waiting builds strength. Waiting builds courage.

Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

Wait: (Quavah) To look for eagerly. To hope. To lie in wait. To linger. To expect anything.

We can trust God to hear our request. We can expect anything from him. Our hope can rest in Him. We can lie down - rest a spell. Linger and eagerly look for the Lord...waiting.

Be strong here is used not of physical strength, but of the mind. God strengthens our mind while we wait on Him.

Let your heart take courage - once again used of the mind. It takes courage to trust in the unseen. To hope. Waiting with undaunted courage.

Undaunted: courageously resolute especially in the face of danger or difficulty : not discouraged.
Undaunted waiting in an act of the Holy Spirit. I can't do this in my own strength.

The Lord allows us to exercise our faith in the wait. To exercise strength and courage. To practice trusting Him. To practice rest. To practice patience.

Patience is waiting well.

What an opportunity waiting gives us to expect of Him. To linger in His presence. Waiting courageously. Hoping with undaunted faith in the One who is worthy of our trust.

This blog is not in theory for me. There is an area of my life that I have been in a season of wait for over eight months. Waiting and watching, every single day, several times a day, for the Lord's answer to manifest. It is hard. But I am thankful for the trust, courage and strength He is building in me. I would NOT trade it.
I do not doubt him. I know he is working on my behalf.

And I look forward, in faith, to that Christmas morning like gift from him. Whenever that is.
His timing is always perfection.
If you, too, are waiting, know today that the eye of the Lord is on you. As is His great love. Let us rejoice with the Psalmist and pray:

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love. Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Psalm 33:18, 20-22

In Spite of Cussing and Southern Comfort

There was a time in my life when I stood outside, looking in on the Christian way of life.

I was an onlooker.

Image

Through the window I could see joy, deep joy, peace, freedom, authentic laughter and meaningful friendships. Christians were fascinating to watch.

But I was just that...a watcher. An outsider.

By choice.

I thought that the Christian life was reserved for those who were good. People who made clean choices. People who didn't cuss. Or drink Southern Comfort.

But as fascinated as I was with the Christian life, I was equally convinced that it was restrictive, dull, condemning and judgemental. And who wants to enter a room full of people looking down their noses?

These people will see right through me. They would have my number. There is no room for people like me. They wouldn't understand me. No, it's too risky. I'll stay out here. Alcohol, sex, body image, envy, money -much safer. Out here, I don't have to change. I am familiar with this side of the window.

Whoever loves his life loses it. - Jesus

Irony: By trying to gain acceptance from my peers, I was losing. By trying to gain affection from the opposite sex, I was losing. By trying to gain attention with my sexuality, I was losing.

Losing (apollymi)- to destroy. Render useless. Be lost.

I was destroying my own life. One day after useless day, I was loving a lost life.

Whoever hates his life in this world will keep it. - Jesus

Hate my life (miseō) meaning to love less. Postpone in love.

Love my life less and I will love it more.

Quite the paradox.

Overtime, I kept coming back to that window. Standing outside. Looking in.

And the more I stood there, the more clearly I could see my reflection. My tired face. My weary spirit. My emptiness.

My side of the glass was looking less and less appealing.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. - Jesus

I needed rest. My lifestyle wore me out. People pleasing is exhausting.

OK. On a trial basis, I will walk in. Just to see what is really going on in there. At this point what do I have to lose?

Except everything?

So I stood amongst them. The Christians. Waiting, with clinched fists and squinted eyes, for the stones to hit. Waiting on my lecture of why I don't belong.

But instead, they opened my hands, and handed me stones. Stones of their own. One story after another of their struggles with money, sex, body image, lying, cheating, stealing, hatred, bitterness, envy, cussing and Southern Comfort.

Struggles. Present tense.

So. They aren't perfect?

No. But they have hope. And rest.

They have Jesus.

Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. John 12:25

Its seemed like a risk. Giving up all I knew, for this Jesus. This God who asks me to hate my life, so I can love Him more.

To love myself less, so I can love myself more.

For something that doesn't make sense, that sure does make sense.

My trial run of Jesus, became a lifetime pursuit.

A pursuit of this God who died for sex, drugs and rockin' roll.

A pursuit of this God who loved me, in spite of cussing and Southern Comfort.

A pursuit of this God who gives my weary soul rest. Who makes my tired eyes light.

A pursuit of this God who called me to hate my life - to love it less. So I may keep it.

Eternally.

Whatever we give up, He will replenish.

Whatever we lose, He will restore.

He is worth the risk.

When Life Throws a Curveball...

It takes a lot to leave me speechless.

A lot.

But does life ever throw you such a curve ball that you are at a loss for words?

Curveball: n. An unexpected turn of events initiated by an opponent or chance.

Well, life has thrown me such a curve ball.

And it has taken much of my efforts to try and catch it.

And it has left me speechless.

Which is honestly, so so good.

Curveballs keep me on my spiritual toes. Re-evaluating and growing in this game. Curveballs keep my ear attentive to my Coach and to His instruction.

Today I...

I NEED TO HEAR FROM HIM.

I NEED HIS WORD TO SPEAK.

I NEED TO SEE HIS FACE.

I NEED HIS GUIDANCE.

Hear my voice when I call, O Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, Lord, I will seek. Do not hide your face from me."
Psalm 27:7-8

My heart is seeking His face. My ear is strained to His Word.

At church, the preschoolers sing a song right before their lesson. I say to them, "Let's quiet our hearts so we can hear from God's Word this morning."

Then we sing familiar words from Psalm 46:10 set to the most precious tune. The words say, "Be still. Be silent and know that I am God."

Be still and know that I am God.

Be still and know (raphah yada`) meaning: To cease striving and receive knowledge. Receive instruction. And allow God to make Himself known.

Hallelujah.

That is exactly where God has me today. Being still. Quieting my heart. And knowing.

If life is throwing you a curve ball, if you have experienced an unexpected turn of events, cease striving and allow God to make Himself known to you.

Also, I pray you will be blessed by this song today. Word of God Speak, by Mercy Me. I rest in its truth.

Love to you all...

My Quiet Ambition

My life is many things. Quiet is not one of them.

I say with confidence that, to some degree, you can relate.

1 Thessalonians 4:11 reads...
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands.

Upon reading this, I admit, I am a bit discouraged. Really Lord, how am I to lead a quiet life? Remember those three boys you gave me?

Let's investigate.

I got the biggest kick out of this...

Quiet (hēsychazō) means - to rest, not running hither and thither, but to stay home and mind your own business.

Hither and thither are not words in my everyday dialect, but oh so telling of my life. I am constantly running hither and thither and always feeling a bit whithered by it all. And I do it to myself. I am one to go and go and go and go. But how much more would I experience quiet if I would make it my ambition to rest, stay home a bit more and back away from so much hithering and thithering?

A couple of weeks back, we took to a trip to West Tennessee to visit grandparents. I have been there countless times over the course of my marriage, but this last visit I couldn't get over the simplicity of Brent's grandmother's land and her life.

Mema wrote the book on the quiet life. She has one fuzzy TV channel (that she rarely watches), reads everyday, hems a lot of pants, teaches Sunday school, makes jars of jelly, cooks every meal, sends cards in the mail, loves walking around her yard, works in her garden, prays often and leads a very content, pleasant and peaceful life.

So much to be desired.

So I am asking myself...how can I strive for a more quiet, restful life? What does that look like for my family?

How do we balance family, relationships, jobs, school, ministry, finances and home but yet not wear ourselves out running hither and thither?

Let's start by enjoying a cup of joe, and a little quiet reflection.....

I'd love to hear how you strive for quiet.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all....

What exactly is a Yoke?

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:29-30

Confession time.

There is no telling how many times I have heard this verse in my Christian walk. I have heard it, referred to it and even prayed it over people. But who other than my six-year-old to make an honest person out of me. We were writing sentences with his new spelling words one week. One of the eight words...YOKE. "Mom, what does yoke mean?" Pause. "Well. Grant. It is...uh. You know a.... It's like in the Bible when .... Let's look it up!" I knew what it meant but couldn't tell you what it was. Kinda. "Merriam-Webster says, a Yoke is a frame fitted to a person's shoulders to carry a load in two equal portions. A balance or scale." There ya go. A Yoke. Who knew!? (Probably everyone but me).

So, Jesus, you are telling me to take your yoke and learn from you. You are humble and gentle. I will find rest there. Your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Let's apply.

In this passage, the word YOKE is used metaphorically (you know I love a good metaphor). It refers to any burden or bondage. As that of slavery. The commands of Christ as to the commands of the Pharisees (the law).

Bondage. I hate the thing.

So, I'm just going to say it.

People don't want be Christians because they think it is just a bunch of rules they have to follow. They feel the "weight" of the law on their shoulders, it is hard to balance and it is just something they do not want to bear. It seems burdensome. Can I suggest to you this morning that you are thinking about the yoke of the law. Very different. Christianity is not about being good or being nice. It's not about how many times you've gone to church (although I am a huge fan of the place), or how many scriptures you know. This is the stuff that keeps people turned off. And it is a lie. The lie that "good things" can earn God's favor. We could never do enough.

Christ is saying I AM ENOUGH! COME TO ME! MY LAW IS DIFFERENT! I AM GENTLE! THE LAW IS SLAVERY! I AM FREEDOM! THROW OFF YOUR CHAINS! LEARN FROM ME! I AM NOT A BURDEN! YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS HERE!

Oh I just want to shout! This is it! Do you see!? COME TO HIM! There is freedom here.

I have no idea where you are. You may have followed Christ for years. You get this. If so, I challenge you today to examine your heart for areas of bondage. What metaphoric weight are you carrying on your shoulders. How are you going to receive the rest for your soul today? Trade it in. His yoke is much lighter.

If you have been burned by the law and have carried a "burdensome" view of Christianity for years, I challenge you to throw it out. Throw off your chains. Start over today. Learn from Christ.

Be blessed.

Tired of Toiling

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

I am tired today.

It is never good to wake up tired. Life is really busy for us, Crusade has been really busy for us and life doesn't seem to care. There are still fires to put out, bills to pay and our little rascals aren't saying, "Mommy and Daddy seem really overwhelmed with life right now, let's take initiative to stop fighting over everything, clean up our rooms, dress ourselves and fix breakfast."

I have talked to a lot of tired people lately. Weary people. It is epidemic. I remember my sister-in-law quoted her pastor one Sunday saying, "The enemy wants to wear you out." That has really resonated with me. Yes, he does. The enemy wants to wear us out, overwhelm us, crowd our calendars, pack our to-do lists, and exhaust us. So today I am mad about it and I am done with him.

I am greedy when it comes to gifts the Lord has given me. I want them all. And today I want my rest. Because he gave it to me. He died for it.

So the next few days, this is where I land. Reflecting on Jesus' promise to give me rest for my soul.

Matthew 11:28 says, "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest." Here I come, Lord.

Weary in this passage means, "tired with toil." Now, "toil" isn't a word I use in my everyday vernacular, but it is very descriptive of where I am. Nothing HUGE has happened in life right now to wear me out. It isn't one thing. It is just I am tired from all my toiling!! So I am fitting the bill. But.... Glory to God, Rest in this passage means, "freedom from activity, toil or labor; peace of mind or spirit." This is the best part...rest also means, "to permit one to cease any movement or labor in order to recover and collect his strength. To refresh."

Now you and I both know, we can't stop movement in daily life. But Jesus is saying to us....Come to me all you who are tired with toil and I will permit you to refresh so you can recover! Collect your strength in Jesus! Hallelujah!

How am I going to to this today, Lord?

I am going to think on you instead of my weariness. I am going to be thankful we have a ministry to do, a house to clean, money to pay our bills, food to prepare, and a grandmother to visit. I am going to go over my to-do list with you. You want to hear all about it. I am going to walk this thing out with you instead of my own failing strength. I am going to get out of my head and into your Word. I am going to praise you with song. Reflect on your goodness to me and refresh. It's all about you. I am feeling rested already.

Go and claim your rest.
