Grant Opportunities

ISA administers two main grants programs to benefit members: (1) Research Workshop Grants and (2) Travel Grants. ISA uses some membership and conference registration fees to fund these programs.

Research Workshop Grants

Created in 1992, ISA’s Research Workshop Grants (RWG) are an important benefit of ISA membership. They are designed to encourage collaborative and interdisciplinary research among diverse scholars from different parts of the world in all subfields of International Studies. Short RWG application proposals are submitted online. The RWG evaluation criteria emphasize interdisciplinarity and intellectual merit; the inclusiveness and quality of the collaboration; participant diversity and balance; and the contribution to ISA’s mission. These grants are also designed to give ISA members, especially early career scholars, support and experience in writing a grant proposal and in developing a collaborative research project.

Travel Grants

ISA runs travel grant programs for ISA members for most ISA conferences. The largest program expenditures are devoted to the ISA Annual Convention. Travel grants are available to all ISA members with special consideration for graduate students, junior scholars, and scholars from developing countries.

Dissertation Completion Fellowship [Next Call Opening Soon!]

The new ISA Dissertation Completion Fellowship is open to applicants from across the social sciences and humanities working in the broad field of International Studies. It is intended to support graduate students in the final stages of dissertation writing, typically in the last year of their PhD program. While the fellowship is open to all eligible graduate student members of ISA, the committee particularly encourages applications from groups, genders, and nationalities that have been historically under-represented in the field of International Studies. Preference will also be given to students without access to other sources of funding to assist with dissertation completion.
