Woman Dies in Edmonton Police Service Custody (March 26, 2026)

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a woman’s death in custody following her arrest by Edmonton Police Service (EPS) on March 26, 2026. ASIRT reports that at approximately 6:30 PM, EPS officers responded to a call about a woman causing a disturbance at a restaurant in the Mill Woods area. Witnesses told police that she was allegedly “acting erratically, yelling, and frightening customers.” When police arrived, the woman reportedly ran into another nearby restaurant and hid in a washroom there.

Officers found and arrested her, then called paramedics to attend the scene. According to ASIRT, the woman allegedly did not cooperate with paramedics’ attempts to assess her condition. Rather than take her to hospital, she was transported to the EPS Detainee Management Unit (DMU), a specialized unit for processing and monitoring at-risk or vulnerable detainees, at approximately 7 PM.

ASIRT reports that during transport, the woman allegedly continued to behave erratically. Yet, upon arrival, DMU staff found her unresponsive and called EMS to take her to the hospital. She died there shortly afterwards.

A 60-year-old man died in Edmonton Police Service (EPS) custody on the evening of February 27, 2025. It is reported that the man suffered a “medical event” during his arrest. Details of this have not been released publicly.

EPS says it was called to an apartment building near 103A Avenue and 95th Street, in the Boyle Street neighborhood, regarding a report that a man armed with a weapon had threatened another building resident. On arrival officers allegedly found that the man had barricaded himself in his apartment. Police got a search warrant and entered the apartment. They claim that some type of unspecified “confrontation” occurred before they arrested the man.

Initial reports say the man was receiving medical attention at the scene when the health emergency happened. It has not been clarified what he was receiving medical attention for, or if this was related to the subsequent medical emergency. Edmonton’s tactical emergency medical services team, a paramedic team that works with the EPS tactical unit, was the one treating the man when he suffered the medical emergency.

Mathios (Matthew) Arkangelo, 28-Year-Old Black Man, Identified as Person Killed by Edmonton Police on June 29

Mathios (Matthew) Arkangelo, a 28-year-old Black man, has been identified publicly as the man shot and killed by an Edmonton Police Service officer on June 29, 2024. Video from home security cameras in the neighborhood show the officer shoot Mr. Arkangelo while the young man had both arms raised outward at his sides, in surrender position, while facing the officer and apparently posing no threat. Video time stamps also suggest the officer shot Mr. Arkangelo within only about 57 seconds of encountering him. After being shot Arkangelo fell to the ground. His arms and legs occasionally moved over the course of more than a minute.

At no point from the time shots were first fired and the end of the video (roughly one minute and 36 seconds) does any officer approach Mr. Arkangelo to offer assistance. Roughly two minutes after the shooting, other officers turned Mr. Arkangelo over and handcuffed him. Another video displaying events roughly three minutes after the shooting shows several officers standing around Mr. Arkangelo’s body on the ground but, again, offering no medical assistance.

Witnesses reported hearing four shots fired. The video from the neighborhood does not include audio. In addition to concerns raised over the almost immediate police resort to lethal force against someone with arms raised out to his sides, questions have been raised about police firing shots on a residential street where it is believed children were playing outside.

EPS in SUVs and the Air 1 helicopter had been searching the area for someone following a single-vehicle rollover in the Fraser area of northwest Edmonton.

Police claim some type of unspecified “confrontation” occurred and an officer fired a service pistol, striking the man. He was reportedly treated on scene by paramedics and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died there.

None of the police claims have been confirmed publicly.

Man Dies in Police Foot and Helicopter Chase Over Bike Light in Edmonton (April 9, 2024)

A man drowned in the North Saskatchewan River during a foot and helicopter pursuit by Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers on April 9, 2024. It is reported that police tried to stop the man at around 2:17 AM for riding a bike “without proper lighting equipment” in the area of 93 Street and 82 Avenue. The man rode onto a pathway with the officers following on foot and by helicopter. The police Air-1 helicopter located the man and the pursuing officers, maintaining visual contact as he was seen running onto the icy river before slipping into the open water.

Community critics have questioned police deployment of a helicopter and pursuing a chase of someone over a bicycle light. They have also pointed to the traumatic impacts of policing, especially for people with mental health issues or histories of criminalization.

Particularly, marginalized people are disproportionately targeted and ticketed for bicycle-related infractions such as riding on the sidewalk or cycling without a bell or lights. Indigenous people especially are disproportionately impacted by policing of cycling.

Kassandra Gartner (45) Killed in Police Pursuit in Edmonton (Feb. 25, 2024)

Kassandra Gartner, a 45-year-old woman who was a mother of three daughters, was struck and killed during a police pursuit after running over a police spike belt laid to stop the vehicle that hit her and exiting her vehicle to check the damage. It has been reported that Gartner, who was from Fort Saskatchewan, was the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank executive director. The fatal collision occurred near 50 Street and 22 Avenue SW in Edmonton, Alberta, around 10 PM on February 25, 2024.

RCMP initiated the deadly pursuit of a U-Haul in Beaumont, outside Edmonton, at around 9 PM, because, they say, they believed the driver was “involved with stealing packages off doorsteps.” They later gained assistance from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Air-1 helicopter to help track the vehicle. Multiple surrounding RCMP detachments, including Leduc and Strathcona, were also involved. EPS suggest they were aware that RCMP had laid a spike belt within Edmonton city limits.

The victim had run over a police spike belt with her car and was struck by the fleeing U-Haul after she had exited her vehicle apparently to check the damage from the spike belt. In total three uninvolved vehicles reportedly ran over the spike belt. A man from another vehicle suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The U-Haul crashed after striking the victim.

It is also reported that a witness saw the person driving the U-Haul abandon it and drive off in another vehicle, that had a child inside, at the crash site. Police report that the child was found unharmed near 66 Street and 25 Avenue 11 minutes later and reunited with his family.

In a statement to media, Amanda Bell, president of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Gatherers Society remembered her colleague,

“She was the heart and soul of our mission and the driving force for service to our community. Her unwavering dedication and compassion have left a mark not only on our clients and volunteers but on the entire community. Kass’s spirit and commitment to service will continue to inspire us every day. As we face the days ahead without Kassandra, the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank is committed to continuing the vital work she so passionately led.”

Man (49) Dies in Edmonton Police Custody After IntoxicationArrest (Jan. 5, 2024)

A 49-year-old man died in Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Custody on January 5, 2024. EPS claim they arrested the mab after officers responded to “trouble with person” reports at an apartment building near 112 Avenue and 80 Street. EPS assumed the man was “intoxicated” and he was taken into custody and transported to the EPS Detainee Management Unit (DMU).

EPS claim the man suffered a “medical event” upon arrival at the DMU. He was pronounced dead at the scene. EPS say the director of law enforcement was notified and has directed that the investigation into the death remain with EPS.

If true this is troubling as investigations into in-custody deaths should be carried out by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). No explanation has been given for this at present.

Intoxication arrests are often deadly. The practice should be ended immediately.
