I remember a peplum / swords and sandals movie where the protagonist (Hercules or whatever his name is) eventually fights the main villain in space.

They are fighting on the moon (or a different planet), and the villain has many technological gadgets but in the end is no match for the main villain.

What movie could that have been?

I don't understand your second sentence. Is it intended to mean that there's a hitherto unmentioned second villain that fights the main villain? Commented yesterday
  • not a great fit, but the technological aspects reminds me of Flash Gordon c. 1980 which does also have Space Erol Flynn and Space Dwarves who fly. Also a Space Jet Ski Commented yesterday

@user888379, I think the OP must have written "villain" when he meant "hero". Just a brain fart. Whether it is the hero no match for the villain, or the villain no match for the hero, I can't say for sure. Most likely the second. Commented yesterday

@Pete That was my working assumption also, but I was trying to nudge the OP into clarifying the question. Commented yesterday

Possibly, Hercules Against the Moon Men?

Movie poster for Hercules Against the Moon Men

In ancient Greece, a race of evil aliens from the Moon land on Earth. For years they have terrorized the nearby city of Samar. Hercules (Maciste in the original version) attempts to free the people of the kingdom of Samar from the rule of their evil queen. She is under the spell of invading Moon Men who demand children for sacrifice in hopes their spilled blood can revive their own dead queen.

The Queen of Samar has made a pact with the Moon Men to conquer the world and become the most powerful woman alive. The downtrodden residents of Samar cheer the arrival of the mighty Hercules, who on their behalf faces deadly obstacles, battles the Moon monsters and eventually confronts the leader of the Moon Men, Redolphis, a metal-headed giant.

  • @PeterM: Better? :-D Different restrictions on different videos. Ironically, it's easier to find the whole movie... Commented 20 hours ago

You might be remembering The Adventures of Hercules, the 1985 sequel to Hercules (1983). Both films star Lou Ferrigno in the title role, both are written and directed by Luigi Cozzi, and both include some science-fiction elements, but the 1985 outing is a bit more "spacey".

The Adventures of Hercules movie poster

The premise of The Adventures of Hercules, from Wikipedia: "The film opens explaining the story of Zeus' Seven Mighty Thunderbolts that kept peace. One day, other vengeful gods (Aphrodite, Hera, Poseidon, and Flora) stole these lightning bolts to create chaos. The lack of these thunderbolts has rendered Zeus powerless and sent the Moon on a collision course with the Earth."

Aspects that match your memory:

I remember a peblum / swords and sandals movie

Although overall it's perhaps science-fantasy, Hercules sports a loincloth and sandals, and primarily wields a sword. Other heroes likewise use non-technological weapons, such as bows and spears, sometimes magical.

where the protagonist (Hercules or whatever his name is)

Hercules is the protagonist.

eventually fights the main villain in space.

At the film's climax, Hercules and his nemesis, Minos, literally battle in space. As they do so, they transform first into rotoscoped "pure energy" versions of themselves, then Minos morphs into an energy T-Rex while Hercules becomes a neon gorilla.

They are fighting on the moon (or a different planet)

Minos has a base (well, a movie set) on the moon where he holds captive one of Hercules' companions, Urania. Just prior to the final battle, Minos transforms into a comet, flies from the moon to swoop around some asteroids, and confronts Hercules.

and the villain has many technological gadgets

Throughout the film, Minos is working with Dedalos (sic) to utilize "science" against Hercules. At various points, Minos shoots lasers from his eyes, has a kind of light sword, a forcefield, etc.

but in the end is no match for the main [hero].

As expected, Hercules prevails.
