Echo is the main protagonist in DEEMO II, as well as the character the player controls in exploring Central Station.
Echo is a "Returner", a person who somehow came back from being bloomed. Echo believes that The Composer is responsible for Returning Echo to the world after being bloomed. However, The Composer abandoned Central Station, leaving its residents to fear the Hollow Rain. Consequently, Echo's positive comments about The Composer has made it difficult for her to fit in with most of the station's residents.
Regardless, Echo genuinely believes that The Composer will return one day to save the world from The Ancestor and the Hollow Rain. Until then, she and Deemo help to ward off the rain and investigate Central Station for more clues about The Composer in hopes that he can be found.
Appearance[]
Echo has a gray bowl-cut hairstyle with two longer face-framing tendrils. Her eyes are a gray purple color. There are flower petals sitting atop her head. Echo's default outfit is a classic overcoat and boots.
Personality[]
Echo's collectibles describe her as cheery, optimistic, determined, and resistant to peer pressure. Echo is also described as outwardly positive about others but humble towards herself, though self-reflection is seldom seen by others.
The story cutscenes also show Echo being what was described above, though also especially sensitive to criticism and negativity regarding her optimism towards The Composer. Though she has a humble nature and considers herself perfectly ordinary, the cutscenes where she does self-reflect or self-describe is generally negative, especially with regards to her piano-playing. These acts suggest that she struggles to point out positives about herself if not related to other people, such as The Composer.
Though Echo generally has a cheery, optimistic, and supportive attitude, several interactions with the station residents show that Echo sugar-coats her statements. An example is when Lida asks Echo to stay still for two hours to paint her portrait, only for Echo to blurt "no way" before providing a more acceptable excuse not to stay. Other examples are Echo being perplexed by the quirks of the station residents but attempting superficially supportive statements. Despite this, Echo does appreciate many other aspects about the residents with sincerity when they exist.
Story[]
Chapter 1[]
Echo comes from a far-off town called Horizon, which she calls her home. One day, Echo got caught in the Hollow Rain and bloomed. Echo remained in darkness for a long while until she heard a melody. She then woke up in front of The Composer's statue in Central Station, leading Echo to believe it was The Composer who saved her from the darkness. Learning about The Composer and The Ancestor, Echo believes that The Composer will return one day to ward off the Hollow Rain, allowing her and everyone else to return home.
Echo's idea of The Composer is not the same as everyone else, however, learning that he abandoned the residents of Central Station for reasons unknown. Consequently, Echo quickly became an outcast to most residents as she tries to to get them to see her perspective. Echo even attempts to help Central Station by running outside to find music charts left behind by The Composer to ward off the rain. Though Echo successfully finds some charts, she nearly blooms again when Hollow Rain suddenly started pouring while she was outside. She makes it back, only to pass out briefly.
Echo met Deemo after being asked by the Station Master to find him, as the charts Echo got from outside were too bloomed to be read. Witnessing Deemo's talents, Echo learns that Deemo is the guardian of the station left behind by The Composer after the latter had left. Since then, Echo had tried to ask Deemo about The Composer, why Echo has Returned, and if he knew a certain melody that Echo heard while in the darkness. Though Deemo did not know the answer to these questions, he is familiar enough with what Echo said to take interest in her endeavors.
Since then, Deemo interacts with Echo by sharing his memories. On the Balcony, the memory shared was the fight between The Composer and The Ancestor, the fight which The Composer was winning until he walked away for unknown reasons. In the Lobby's past, Deemo asks Echo if she can find The Composer and inform him of the future, but was unable to due to Taiyo and Pimi being in danger. In The Impression, Echo witnessed that Deemo can touch the rain without blooming, and during their exploration, Echo found an exact replica of Klaus' hammer that replaces his bloomed one. Klaus is thankful since the hammer was from his mentor passing down an important lesson.
Since The Impression, Echo has found more ways to help the residents of Central Station, from rescuing a cat to making the Café area active again. Along the way, Echo has worrying encounters with the Outlanders, who follow Echo for unknown reasons and stop when another person is close by. The first encounter was in the Café, which Deemo put a stop to so he could share a memory of The Composer struggling to finish some charts. The two then decide to clear the rain on The Annex to make way towards the Secret Workshop, supposing that the bottle The Composer used to block the rain in the memory could be used to enter the room blocked by rain in The Impression.
The bottle was then discovered by Echo under the table in the Secret Workshop, but the roof collapsed and poured rain onto Echo. Deemo tries to save Echo, which triggers another memory. Echo and Deemo witness the fight between The Composer and The Ancestor that ended prematurely while in the grassfields, and they rush over to the piano when The Composer leaves. Deemo cannot interact with his memories, while Echo can and tries to finish off The Ancestor. However, because Echo is not good at playing the piano, she could not beat The Ancestor in The Composer's place. Waking up upset but thankful for the bottle's protection from the rain, Echo and Deemo return to The Impression to pass the blocked door.
Passing the blocked door, Echo and Deemo witness a room full of abstract statues. The room activates, and an Impression of The Composer asks Echo to awaken every station's Guardian, with each station located on the Diorama in the Secret Workshop. Feeling that The Composer truly chose Echo to carry out his wishes, she and Deemo decide to leave the station with the bottle in hand, hoping to awaken each Station's guardian. The first station they walk to is high in the mountains.
