usage has two environment namespaces, and on Windows they are one:

Windows environment variable names are case-insensitive, so USAGE_DEBUG and a spec's own usage_debug are the same variable there. Two things follow, both measured rather than reasoned about.

A script cannot read its own argument

Windows keeps the existing key's spelling and replaces only the value, so writing usage_debug lands in USAGE_DEBUG and the script reads nothing under the name the docs give it. The colliding names are debug, trace, log and shell_bash — the first three about as ordinary as argument names get. It is intermittent by nature: fine on a clean machine, broken for whoever has the setting in their profile.

A setting cannot reach a mise task

mise clears usage_* before running a task so its own parsed arguments cannot influence spec discovery, comparing the first six characters case-insensitively. That is correct for a platform where usage_foo and USAGE_FOO are one variable — but it takes the settings with it:

Which is why usage's own Windows testing has to call cargo test rather than mise r test.

The change

The settings move to USAGECLI_:

Six characters is why nothing closer works — USAGE_CLI_ and USAGE_SETTING_ are cleared just the same, so the prefix has to differ inside USAGE_ itself. Not pretty; accurate, at least, in that all four are read only under cli/src. Measured: under mise run, USAGECLI_SHELL_BASH arrives and USAGE_SHELL_BASH does not.

Nothing breaks. Every old name is still read, behind the new one — first name set wins, which is the order usage-config already gives deprecated_envs in config/src/env.rs. That crate also already normalizes for this exact Windows behaviour; it was only the CLI's own settings, still on a bare env::var, that had been left behind.

The tests that were written against the old names are untouched and still pass, which is what says the old names still work. Removing them is a separate decision for a later major.

USAGE_LOG is the one that also changes shape. It was written with set_var, which a spawned script then inherited — so usage was overwriting the value a script's own log argument was about to read. The filter is computed now rather than written back into the environment. Precedence is unchanged: trace over debug over an explicit level over info.

Verified

On Windows, complete_word with the override under each spelling — 50 passed, 0 skipped either way, the second run being what shows the old name still works:

The skip count is worth stating separately: a skip counts as a pass in the summary line, so 50 passed alone would not show these ran.

New unit tests in cli/src/env.rs cover the current name winning, the legacy name alone, a blanked current name falling through rather than switching the setting off, and that the prefix is one mise does not clear.

Linux is unchanged.

One pre-existing Windows failure is untouched and unrelated: test_complete_path_preserves_partially_typed_segments fails the same way on main.

Follow-up

This unblocks a windows-latest job in test.yml, which I have run on a fork: with USAGECLI_SHELL_BASH set and core.autocrlf off, the suite passes there. It can now use mise r test like the Linux job rather than calling cargo directly. Happy to send it whenever you want it.

Replying here to the outside-diff comment on cli/src/env.rs:185-189, which cannot take an inline reply.

Both findings were right, and the second one was also the CI failure.

shell_program_override returned only the value, so shell.rs reported every failed override as coming from $USAGECLI_SHELL_* — including when what the user set was USAGE_SHELL_*. Pointing someone at a variable they never touched is worse than not naming one.

Fixed by returning the key alongside the value:

setting is now that with the key dropped, so there is still one resolution order rather than two. shell.rs names the key that answered; wsl_path_hint keeps naming the current spelling, because that one is telling someone what to set rather than reporting what they set.

That was also why CI was red. cli/tests/shell_override.rs sets the legacy name and asserts the error names it back — a file I had missed entirely, and the assertion was correct all along: the error should name the variable that was set. So the fix makes the test pass rather than the test needing changing. Both test and coverage failed on that one test.

I missed it because my Linux run used cargo test without --no-fail-fast, so an unrelated failure earlier in the run (two usage exec node tests, no node on that machine) stopped the harness before shell_override was reached. Re-run with --no-fail-fast: shell_override 8/8, and the only failures left are those two node ones.

New coverage under the current name: it replaces the program, it wins when both are set, and a failure under it names it. The tests that were already there still set the legacy name and still pass, which is what says the old spelling works.
