I've decided I'm going to copy my communication lessons here. I'm saving them on my HD, of course, and my external HD, but you never know... (And maybe someone else might find them useful.)
I told you earlier about the communication lessons I'm doing in the classrooms. One part of this is that I have to have a lot of samples prepped. Not only do I need them to keep the lesson moving quickly, I give the teachers a copy. They can copy and cut the lines apart for seatwork and/or reinforce the lessons with another session like I did and/or they'll have the information next year if I'm assigned to a different school.
Usually, I have speech picture-decks and/or sample pages in various speech books to give me a boost on the ideas. I like to have 100 - 115 samples (depending on when I get to the end of a printed page), and I need all the help I can get.
But next week I've scheduled a lesson in "Odd One Out", and the picture-deck had only 25 pictures that would translate to verbal use. With a picture, students can choose between "desk phone, cell phone, cordless phone, pot". With words, not so much. <g>
So, I've spent the last few hours, and finally managed to come up with 84 samples, yay! That's probably enough. Of course, I'd like to have more, but my brain is wrung dry. Good enough; maybe some of the teachers will come up with a few ideas to add to the list.
If you're interested in seeing my brilliance -- *starwatcher snorts softly to herself* -- check under the cut.
Odd One Out
Look for the things that fit in a group or category. (Books on the same shelf in your mental library.) Which thing does not fit that group? Why? (Because it's not...)
Some are easier:
Pigeon - Box - Duck - Owl - Hawk -- A box is not a bird.
Some are harder:
Monkey - Elephant - Zebra - Giraffe - Grizzly Bear -- A grizzly bear does not live in Africa.
Some might have two or more "right" answers:
Cheese - Yoghurt - Ice Cream - Butter - Cottage Cheese
1. Ice cream is frozen, the others are not.
2. Butter is eaten on top of other things, not alone.
3. Cottage cheese is lumpy, the others are smooth.
You need to figure out the connections between things, understand what parts are similar (alike) and what's different -- and what is the most important likeness or difference to find the answer.

Date: Jan. 5th, 2012 03:36 pm (UTC)I let the teachers handle punctuation, though I may try a lesson on homophones; it could be tricky when the lesson is completely verbal.
The problem is, these types of things still appear on tests, but the teachers don't have time to expose the students to it; everything is "teach this book in this way" and squeeze any creativity into the five-minute cracks. I'm hoping to encourage mental flexibility and reasoning skills.

Date: Jan. 5th, 2012 03:15 pm (UTC)Thinking is exactly the point -- I present it to the students as mind games -- as I try to improve their reasoning skills. It's verbal for me, because writing takes too long, but the teachers may develop written worksheets with the information.
You're right about the animal question. I'm too used to the kids who actually need speech; for them jungle/desert (with jungle being any place in Africa that isn't desert) is a huge leap -- they regard all these animals as living in the zoo. I'll change it to all African animals and grizzly bear for American animal.
I've actually washed my hands with toothpaste; it's good for cutting unpleasant smells. I'm aiming for snow, because you don't clean with it.

Date: Jan. 5th, 2012 01:26 pm (UTC)I could come up with alternative answers for quite a few of these, but some are based on what it is rather than what it isn't. Though I'm not sure about 65 (I have no idea what 'Six Flags' is).

Date: Jan. 5th, 2012 03:27 pm (UTC)As I told GK, I aimed that question at my actual speech students, who can barely stretch to recognize that these animals live elsewhere than a zoo. But I'll amend it to African / American animals.
Many may have alternative answers to the one I planned; as long as they can explain their reasoning, the students will get credit. (Not that I assign 'credit' -- when I'm in the room, it's all verbal -- but the glow of being correct.)
Six Flags is a chain (?) of large amusement parks; there are 8 or 10 scattered across the U.S. A friend and I once spent 14 hours there; a day pass let us ride as often as we wanted. We arrived shortly after the gates opened at 10, and left when they they shut down at midnight. (From about 10 P.M. we were saying "Just one more ride," but it was never true. *g*) Hobbs/Lovington are close enough to Texas that our students know of it even if they've never been there.
