So, [community profile] stargateficrec is having "open reccer's month" -- any member can post recs. You see where this is going right? It's like dangling feathers on a string in front of a cat -- I just have to pounce. <g> Consequently, I've been refreshing my memory of old Stargate fics (mostly SGA-flavored) and dipping into them to make competent recs. So many good stories, so little time. So I've been reading and formatting all day, and the next few weeks, I'll be reccing more Stargate. My urge to rec crashes into my essential laziness so, if I rec at one place, might as well rec the same story at the other, right? (Although not necessarily the same week.) I repeat -- so much fic, so little time.

Rating: Gen
Length: 5,300 words

Summary: “I’ll do it then, I’ll show you,” Nicky says, sharp and cutting, halting Joe mid-sentence. His words ring in the sudden quiet of the apartment, bringing to light how loud they’ve been arguing.
“Are you seriously doing this? Daring me on a date?”
        “If that’s what it takes.”

Reccer's Notes: This is such a sweet, comfortable story, with a thread of spiciness as Joe finds himself beginning to regard Nicky in a different light. A perfect curl-up comfort-read, with an ending that inspires, "Awww..."

Characters: Joe and Nicky
Pairings: Joe/Nicky
Themes: Friends to lovers, AU - Ordinary mortal, Domestic, First dates
Warnings: None
Status: Complete

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Fanwork Links: Finding Atlantis
Creator Links: Keira Marcos at her site
Category: M/M
Rating: Explicit
Length: 72,000 words

Summary: John adjusts to fatherhood on the city of the Ancients while his son, Sebastian, develops a connection to the city that leaves everyone scrambling to keep up.

Reccer's Notes: Like most of Keira's fic, this is complex, detailed, well plotted, and thoroughly engaging. John's son is a genius who has an ATA gene as strong as his father's. His presence in Atlantis is a catalyst that provokes some welcome changes -- John and Rodney realize that they love each other, better tech is developed and/or discovered, and a sentient Atlantis is able to meet them on a personal level. Settle in for a thoroughly captivating read.
But read The Bridge first. Only 2,000 words, it acts as a prequel to "Finding Atlantis" and introduces John's son, Sebastian.

Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, OC Sebastian Sheppard, the regular Atlantis cast, the Sheppard family (eventually), Carson Beckett, Peter Kavanagh, Elizabeth Weir, Jack O'Neill
Pairings: John/Rodney
Themes: Kid fic, First time, Friends to lovers, Novel
Warnings: discussion of murder, discussion of parental loss, and grief.
Status: Complete

Rating: Teen
Length: 11,700 words

Summary: Rodney looked confused, then angry. "It’s not a cage," he said, like she’d insulted him. "It’s a habitat. There’ll be a pond--fresh water, of course!--and trees, and--"
"John had very specific wishes about what should happen to him if he couldn’t be cured, Rodney," Elizabeth said.

Reccer's Notes: Friendship doesn't wane when the 'friendee' becomes sick, injured, disabled... or changed into a giant blue lizard-bug. Rodney won't allow bug-John to be euthanized. His determination that what's left of his friend will be as comfortable and happy as possible leads to a different relationship between them -- which eventually morphs (after suitable action and angst) into an even better connection. It's lovely and heart-warming to see the deep reserves of friendship that Rodney so often hides; this is a beautiful story.

Characters: John, Rodney, Elizabeth, Carson, Ronon, Teyla, Evan Lorne, other SGA personnel.
Pairings: John/Rodney
Themes: Friends to lovers, Friendship, Alien biology
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
