Lions and Tigers and lactating Cockroaches, OH MY!

Do scientists get grossed out?

I suspect many do. I could narrow the field and ask, “Do biologists get grossed out?”. I did two projects in high school that might be too disgusting for some. My father help me obtain a live chicken (I think it was a rooster but it didn’t matter) for a science project. I killed the chicken and then laboriously clean it down to each bone. Then I took on the task of reassembling the bones into a skeleton. It turned out OK, but was more work than I had expected.

The second project came in my senior year. I signed up for an advance class titled Physiology. Each two person team was given a dead well preserved cat. Over the semester we dissected the whole cat. Actually finding body parts was very interesting. At the end I was allowed to keep the cat skull. Great teeth. I know I had the skull in our current house but have not seen it for many years.

I posted about this class on my high school reunion FB page (ok that’s one good thing about Fakebook). Other classmates remember the class and commented. A few of the women recall discovering their cat was pregnant. Maybe it was a different class period than mine but I don’t recall any pregnant cats in my classroom. Being a guy maybe I wasn’t as interested. It’s not like I was the father.

all the better to eat you with, my dear

Oh if you are wondering those teeth in the above picture are NOT part of the cat skull. It was a small gator skull our grandson had.

Still remember the post title? Go ahead look if you need to.

Adding cockroaches to the Wizard Of Oz movie script would have been an opportunity for insecticide product placement. I find cockroaches and many other insects disgusting. However, why do some insects get adored for their beauty (butterfly) or talent (bee)? I don’t know. I suspect their movements, smell, look, what they feel like to touch influence the level of disgust we give these creatures.

Also, our background and culture is very important. But across cultures there are some common disgusting things. Most decay and waste fluids are considered disgusting worldwide. There are exceptions.

How about a delicious Peruvian cuy for a snack? It’s fried/roasted guinea pig. I skipped the offer and just snapped a picture.

When I lived in North Carolina I went to my first pig picking. It was great and somewhat competitive picking your selection right off of the roasted pig.

Have you heard about this expensive coffee that’s made from beans defecated by the asian palm civet? (I thought it was a cat. I looked it up and discovered it’s more of a raccoon-like rodent) Hey cat owners do you think your cat would eat coffee cherries? You could start your own business.

There is a good market for cow urine in India. (story)

A topic for another post - modern manufactured food distances us too far from the source of the food we eat. What’s your opinion?

My research on this post lead me this article about the science of disgusting stuff. In her book, "Don’t Look, Don’t Touch, Don’t Eat," Valerie Curtis focuses on our disgust emotion and its day-to-day effects on our lives. She has been studying disgusting stuff for thirty years. Curtis traces the evolutionary role of disgust in disease prevention and hygiene. Better understanding of disgust she believes will reduce disease in the third world by raising standards of hygiene.

Believe it or not, our disgusting presidential campaign did NOT give me the idea for this post on disgusting things. No it was hearing the news of an ideal protein supplement - cockroach milk. Yeah, my disgusted reaction was followed by, “what cockroaches milk their young?”.

Professor Barbara Stay, University of Iowa, has developed a cockroach milk extraction method called “milking a cockroach”. (I can’t help but think of “jumped the shark”) Oh it’s only the Pacific beetle cockroach that has this unique lactating ability.

Biochemists researched the the nutritional value of this crystalline milk.

Hey Joe, what’s on the schedule for today? Just a cockroach milk analysis. We should finish up early.

Turns out the stuff is highly nutritious. So protein and calorie rich that it might just show up in your energy bar someday.

I talked about the Pope once

Now I eat bacon during Lent. (I don’t think bacon is related to the devil and a fish is not going to get me to heaven.)

Pearly Gate News - Lisleman declared incompetent papacy reporter. However, it’s rumored he is working on Pope jokes.

don't think this is in Italy but a few vestments would help

What’s sorta cool about this new pope thing. (ah, you didn’t hear? What, you have your head up a reality TV show? Turn off Honey Boo Boo and listen to a little news.)

Anyway let’s not get serious.

In a world  One man  They came for

Oh forget it. It’s probably only dramatic for a few people who are praying right now and not reading my blog. But it is interesting.

Here’s why.

We get to relearn or learn first time for many, the traditions of the Roman Catholic church which seem so odd in our modern world.

For example, even though the last Pope created a twitter account the news of the papal selection will come by means of smoke signals instead of twitter.

What I didn’t know was that the Sistine Chapel does not have a chimney for smoke signalling. Luckily that was noticed and Vatican workers installed a chimney yesterday.

Oh pray to God, they have the whole process covered. If the Sacred College of Cardinals finishes during the night they have spotlights shining on the chimney.

This is not Cardinals gone wild. They are “locked in” until they reach a two-thirds majority. While in lock down mode they stay at the a Vatican hotel, Casa Santa Marta (built 1996), for the duration and, in line with tradition, drew lots for their rooms.

White smoke and a ring.

The white smoke is the sign it’s over. A new gold ring is cast unique for each pope. The Ring of the Fisherman is slipped on the pope’s finger at his papal inauguration. This is not to be confused with the Lord of the Rings.

OMG - almost forgot to list my news source - CNN.

spinning shades of grey

Hey shady readers or people who are attracted to the number 50, your kind have been noticed. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say. I noticed this mentioned in Time magazine recently.

Image

The Huffington Post wrote a funny article about this sexy chicken being bound and roasted. The names of the 50 recipes become funny in the context of the popular book that started this craze:

Dripping Thighs
Sticky Chicken Fingers
Bacon-Bound Wings
Mustard-Spanked Chicken

But wait! There’s more. While at the Amazon page for the roasted chicken goddess, I was given the suggestion of another book titled, “Fifty Shades of Bacon”.

Cooks get your spanking spatulas ready. Meanwhile I’m staying out of the kitchen it’s getting too hot for me.

pigs are flying

Bacon Busting News

Eggs easy over there, don’t start sizzling your tongue’s taste-buds too quickly. There’s a mixed review here on this one - watch this report - (BTW very dedicated reporter, oh sorry about the ad at the beginning. I guess CNBC wants a little revenue to paid for their bacon research.)

Now that’s good reporting. Not surprisingly, you either love it or hate it. The reporter sure found it disgusting. Did you notice her face while sipping it?

Last year I posted my findings on a piece of Baconmania. I risked my intestinal fortitude by ordering a Bacon Sundae at Denny’s. A few of you might consider just going into a Denny’s as a risk. I was disappointed.

All this research, pigs flying, sniffing for bacon, and bacon creativity has me needing a Mitch Morgan.

One last thing, blogging is educational. I’ve increased my vocabulary once again. "When pigs fly" is an adynaton.

great ideas that need more work

I bet this has happened to you.

You see or hear about some “must-have” product and think why didn’t I think of that.

Of course, thinking of it is much different than implementing it.

Now I think the following is a great idea -
Colored bubbles for kids

Image

I have enjoyed blowing bubbles with my kids and then years later with my grandkids. Hot summer day, kiddie pool, add some bubble blowing and you have a kids party. I find bubbles sorta magical as they float around and then just pop on their own.

Coloring the bubbles seems like a great way to enhance the bubble experience.

Apparently the color shows up fine but then it doesn’t go away very easily.

The Sunset Orange bubble soap that dripped on the floor of Emily Vanek’s garage dried in dark red splotches resembling blood, the Denver mother says. The blue bubbles turned her two boys “into Smurfs.”

The warning continues: “Do not use at weddings or indoors.”

“There are too many restrictions — you can only play with these in the grass on a sunny day where it might rain later and wash it away and only while wearing the oldest clothes.”

Now can imagine a bride being bombarded by blue bubbles and then the nice spots they would leave? I would not want to be holding a bottle of bubbles anywhere near that scene.

Another idea that needs more work (at least at the place I went to).

Back in March, I posted about the Denny’s Maple Bacon Sundae. I made it out a Denny’s just to try this out. I was disappointed. It could be that this particular Denny’s failed because of their staff. The place was not very popular the afternoon I showed up with a friend of mine.  We had many many tables to pick from.

Maybe I didn’t get the notice but I always thought a sundae should have whipped cream on top. If you look closely at the picture (took the picture before my first bite) of my sundae will not see any whipped cream. I think it was the first time the staff at this location made one. It’s the last time they make one for me.

Regarding the bacon - it was tasty and the combination reminded me of eating waffles with syrup and some bacon on the side.
