The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is a hardware component that unlocks new versions of operating systems if you have reached the system requirements. In Progressbar, the player starts with the 386DK processor, which is based on the Intel 80386DX processor.
Different processors can be used by spending Progress Data, or using My menu's Hardware Manager. The best processors that can be unlocked are the Corn 11i 9.5 Ghz, MD Razor 9 9500 and CRX1686-9512 (they used to be the Corn 11i 8.0 Ghz).
Several companies exist, such as Flint (for Intel), MD (for AMD), CRX (for Cyrix and VIA), Bikerola (for Motorola), PBPower (for PowerPC), Edetä, and Pyrus (for Apple).

Trivia[]
- As of version 0.9955, if the CPU starts overheating, all of the wallpapers turn red (except for PB-DOS Shell, non-Progress Computer systems, and custom wallpapers).
- When using a CRX CPU, the boot menu for Progressbar will change to Progressive Microtrends', instead of using ENERGY's.
- Some CPUs are mentioned in the Progressnet but do not exist in-game, for example:
- 386DK-20
- MD386DK-32
- MD386DK-64
- MD Atlant 350
- MD Atlant 1600
