Progressbar SpaceShip is the codename for a canceled version of ProgressbarOS, initially scheduled for release during 1999. It would have been the first consumer-oriented ProgressbarOS built upon the NOT codebase, representing a significant departure from previous designs.
Progressbar SpaceShip was conceived as an experimental OS focusing heavily on innovation in user interface design. Unlike the smoother aesthetics of prior systems, SpaceShip introduced bold and sharp-edged visuals, leveraging distinctive pentagonal (5-sided) geometry. This radical design was a deliberate effort by Progressbar Labs to explore unconventional visual languages and push consumer OS design boundaries.
The lead manager of the ProgressbarOS project explained in a 2019 retrospective interview:
"We were releasing two operating systems at once already, why not experiment with the consumer version? We wanted to switch this approach soon anyway [...], so before phasing it out completely, we experimented with its design. We wanted to lean into this idea of 'different', so we designed most of the OS around sharp edges and 5-sided geometry."
Influence and Legacy[]
Though never released to the public, Progressbar SpaceShip significantly influenced subsequent OS designs within the Progressbar family. The original "Stars" theme from SpaceShip evolved into the popular "Acrylic" theme in Progressbar Whisper, which ultimately inspired the "Selena" theme in Progressbar XB.
The merging of SpaceShip with Progressbar Nepbar in 2000 directly resulted in the creation of Progressbar Whisper, marking a critical transition point in the visual and technical evolution of ProgressbarOS.
Cancellation and Merger[]
Originally slated for a 1999 release, delays in development and shifting corporate strategies led to the project's cancellation in 2000. Key features and designs from SpaceShip were subsequently integrated into Progressbar Whisper, ensuring its innovations did not go to waste but instead shaped future OS directions.
Trivia[]
The NOT codebase used in SpaceShip eventually became standard for future ProgressbarOS releases.
Progressbar SpaceShip was internally referred to humorously by developers as "The Pentagon Project" due to its distinctive design.
