- This page is about the lineup of systems. For the game mode, see BarOS (game mode).
- "Progresh" redirects here. For the character, see Clippy.
BarOS (Bar System from 1 to 6/before 1991) is a series of operating systems for the Progresh computer (later named pBar starting from 1999) that was created by Pyrus Pyrifolia Calculators in 1983. It is based on Apple's macOS lineup of operating systems (previously known as Mac OS X, then OS X) and its predecessor, Classic Mac OS.
Introduced in 0.6450, BarOS is different from Progress Computer, as the Bikerola and PBPower series of processors are only made for Progresh computers and each version of BarOS runs on different hardware, unlike Progressbar where every system runs in constantly-evolving hardware. To unlock new releases, one must get enough points.
Features[]
Boot Menu[]
Main article: Boot Menu
The Boot Menu is the menu that appears when the player opens the game. Progresh's system select screen is in the form of two windows: one with all the main releases of BarOS (including those that are not installed), and the other with the special systems (BAR/X and B OS). Tapping one of the icons starts up that version.
In 0.6820 and onward, the BarOS boot menu's look can now depend on the latest version of BarOS installed. You can customise the look starting from 0.7650.
Menu Bar[]
Main article: Begin Menu
The menu bar is the main shell of every BarOS system, which is equivalent to the Begin Menu from Progressbar systems. It has 4 menus: the Pyrus menu, Game menu, Store button and Help button.
- In the Pyrus menu, you can check information about the currently booted system, access Filer, Settings, PB Jams (BarOS 9+), Calendar (BarOS 9+), and Terminus (BarOS 10+, BAR/X), play Puzzle (or open Clock in Bar System 1) and restart/shutdown the system.
- In the Game menu, you can load your current save, start a new game and check your Achievements.
Filer[]
Main article: ProgressDOS
Filer is the BarOS GUI alternative to ProgressDOS. Unlike ProgressDOS, Filer runs in GUI mode, and you just need to tap which file/directory you want to access, or tap the arrow at the top to go back one level. Filer lets you find Bonuses and Cheats as you would in ProgressDOS. Files and directories are deleted by dragging them into Bin.
Terminus[]
Main article: ProgressDOS
Terminus is the BarOS TUI alternative to ProgressDOS, and is available in BarOS 10+ and BAR/X. Along with the ability to find Bonuses and Cheats (like Filer), It also gives access to hidden directories (preceeded by a ".") that "can only been seen through Terminus", according to the README hidden in the ".hidden" directory.
Settings[]
Main article: Settings
Settings is found in the Pyrus menu in every single BarOS system. In the settings menu, you can change various game options and customize the appearance of the currently booted system.
All of BarOS' various settings are contained in a single window, opposed to where every setting is in a different window in most versions of Progressbar.
Puzzle[]
Puzzle is present in Bar System 2 onwards. It is similar to the sliding puzzle in Progressbar Wista/Largehorn, but with 15 pieces instead of 8. It can only be played until you solve it and resets every time you play a level, like Wista/Largehorn.
Appearance[]
Puzzle follows the currently used BarOS system's theme, which is described below:
- Bar System 2 to 6: The puzzle is black and white.
- BarOS 7 to 9 and BAR/X: The puzzle now in color.
- BarOS 10: The puzzle is now in high-quality and the items are glossy.
- BarOS 10.II: The items are now on a brushed metal background with shades.
- BarOS 10.III and onwards: The puzzle's theme is minimalistic.
Media Player[]
Main article: Media Player
Media Player is a program that plays music. It resembles iTunes and Apple Music.
Shutdown Panel[]
The shutdown panel is used for closing the game and switching to another system. The shutdown panel can be accessed via the Pyrus menu and choosing the Restart option. The Restart option will shut down the currently booted OS, and will then return the user to the Boot Menu. The Shutdown option will shut down the booted OS and then display a black screen with a window that reads "It's now safe to turn off the game". The safe to shutdown screen looks similar to that of Progressbar NOT 4.0 and Progressbar NOT 4.0 Server, alongside B OS.
Progress Ambulance[]
Main article: Utilities
When you get a BSOD, you can use this tool to fix errors in your progressbar by playing a short minigame. You have to press the "Scan" button to get the Progress Ambulance to the end of the "road" before the timer runs out. Currently, this is the only utility in BarOS.
Store[]
Main article: Store
Store works the same as it does in Progressbar systems. You can spend Product Keys (
Clock[]
Main article: Taskbar
Clock is an application which displays the current time. In Bar System 1, it can be opened by selecting the Clock command in the Pyrus menu. The Clock will then appear at the bottom-left of the screen. In Bar System 2 onwards, the clock is in the menu bar, to the far-right. In BarOS 9 onwards, the clock shows the weekday.
Cursor[]
Main article: Cursor
The cursor is a graphic which shows the current location for user interaction on the screen. In the mobile version, the cursor is optional and can be turned on in the game's display settings. In the PC version, the cursor is visible by default and cannot be disabled. A sound is played whenever you click on something clickable:
Window animations[]
These animations are different from Progressbar systems.
- In BarOS 9 and below and BAR/X, a outline zooms up with a marquee before the window entirely shows up.
- In BarOS 10 onwards and H@ckgresh, the window will wobble vertically from the top (this animation won't play if you launch PB Jams). If you close a window, the process seen in the last sentence will repeat, but reversed.
Differences between Progressbar and BarOS[]
- The way to play BarOS is different from Progressbar, but they have the same goal: to fill the progressbar.
- Some game modes aren’t included and are only available in BarOS.
- BarOS has Filer, which is not in Progressbar, since it uses ProgressDOS. However, a command line appears in BarOS in BAR/X, BarOS 10 onwards and H@ckgresh under the name Terminus.
- The Begin button, names of programs, game modes, Dog, Clippy, the blue screen of death and more are different than in Progressbar systems.
- BarOS is a new line, since Progressbar was released at the beginning of the game (version 0.2).
- The boot menu is different.
- A pair of two menus are included in the menu bar in BarOS, similar to Progressbar Chitown.
- Themes aren't included until BarOS 8.

Trivia[]
- Pyrus Pyrifolia is the scientific term for Asian pears, which look like apples.
- Bortosimo in EpicAlexisMaxwell's post "What do you think the "Mac" will be called?" gave a suggestion for the name of the macOS-styled systems before they were even announced at that time: "Bar OS". It turned out that he was spot on.
- All BarOS systems have their own setup screens that look the same, except the install icon and the progressbar. H@ckgresh and Bar System 1 don’t have a setup screen.
- The install icon depends on the system:
- A Progresh showing a Pyrus icon (Bar System 2 to BarOS 9 and BAR/X)
- A Progresh showing the version number of that system (BarOS 10)
- A CD with the Cathorse of that system (BarOS 10.II and 10.III)
- A circle of the background of that system as well as the Cathorse (BarOS 11 and 12)
- A circle of the background of that system without the Cathorse (BarOS 13 onwards)
- The install icon depends on the system:
- The cursors in BarOS 10 to 14 and H@ckgresh are similar to that of the black cursor in Progressbar 1X, 11, 11.22 and their server counterparts, while in BarOS 9 below and BAR/X, the cursors are almost similar to the black cursors in Progressbar 1 and 2.
- The safe to shutdown screen in BarOS is different from Progressbar systems, along with Progressbar NOT 4.0 and NOT 4.0 Server.
- The BC version of B OS can be started up in the BarOS boot menu, despite being not technically part of BarOS.
- Despite Bar System 1 to BarOS 9 not having Terminus, the system versions can be assumed from the versions of other systems that do have Terminus.
- The startup and shutdown sound used in BarOS 10 to 10.III, 12 onwards and H@ckgresh is the mostly used startup and shutdown sound in BarOS systems.
