Progressnet is a hypertextual adventure for curious users. By exploring in-game web-pages you can discover cookies, bonuses, cheats, easter eggs and other secrets

— Clippy showing about the Progressnet

A Browser is a program which allows you to access the Progressnet (based on the Internet). It requires a modem, which can be unlocked via basic hardware progression. Progressnet access is available from systems released in 1991 onwards.

Despite Windows 3.1 and Mac OS 7 being the earliest systems in real life with network capabilities, systems in the game released in 1995 or later (as well as BAR/X) have network capabilities. Despite the Progresh BC 800 having a modem, BarOS 8 doesn't have any web browser, mainly due to the fact BAR/X uses the same device as BarOS 8.

Browsers[]

There are currently 6 browsers in the game.

Websites redirects here.

The web address of all websites start with pb://ppp, based on http://www, a prefix used in web addresses in real life. pb:// is based on HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), while PPP (Public Progress Plexus) is based on WWW (World Wide Web). In the third era, the pb:// part is dropped from the web address.

You can find hyperlinks leading to different websites. In most unknown websites, there are three pictures that can randomize after each visit. Most of the websites also contain badges that say either "Progress Browser", "Made with Notebook" or both (only in the first era). On some occasions, a logon box will appear asking you to input 3 asterisks (1 for the Suspicious website and 10 for Searchoo!! website); if you do so, you are able to get a bonus (see the Asterisks section in Bonuses).

Unknown websites and the personal site are hosted on a web hosting service.

  • In the first era, the service is called Progresscities, based on Yahoo! GeoCities, which shut down in 2009.
  • In the second era, the service is called Barpress, based on WordPress.

Bonuses[]

In some websites, bonuses will sometimes appear, and clicking them will award you bonus points. There are counters for cookies, password asterisks, memes and browser points that you have collected just below the search box.

Browser points[]

Browser Points icon

Browser points are collectable points which can be redeemed after finishing a level. There are many ways to earn them, for example:

  • accessing websites;
  • favoriting websites;
  • getting bonuses;
  • accepting the 'Ring the bell?' pop-up in the third era;
  • liking PBook posts/comments;
  • pressing the like/comment button on the very top of the PBook website;
  • reporting trolls on PBook;
  • deactivating the script on the Dangerous website.

Points will be removed if the countdown of the Dangerous website ends or you unfavorite a website.

Cookies[]

Cookies icon

Cookies are bonus points that can be found in the search bar. They will count as 5 points. There are 3 types of cookies, which are:

  1. Bad cookies: Removes 1 cookie when clicked. Bad cookies do not exist in the first era.
  2. Cookies: Normal cookies. They give 1 cookie.
  3. Chocolate cookies: Gives 2 cookies.

Cookies can be given to Dogs in exchange for bonuses from the Dog, and cookies can sometimes be taken away if you press the "Take a cookie" button on the Suspicious website.

In systems that use the third era of the Progressnet, you need to click on a pop-up (appearing the first time you visit a different website) which asks you if you want to accept cookies in order to make them appear.

Meme[]

Memes icon

Memes are bonus points which usually appear on most websites. There will be an image of a magenta square containing the white text "Meme" in ''Impact'' and with a shadow. When it is clicked, you will receive a meme. Each meme is converted to 10 points.

Asterisks[]

Asterisks icon

Asterisks are usable items which are used for login prompts (if a website has one). If you log on with the correct amount of asterisks that the website asks for, you can enter a "locked" site with a bonus in it. If you do it on the Searchoo!! website, you will receive 4 bonuses, but you will need 10 asterisks, not 3 like other websites.

Ads[]

Ads (also known as banners) are rectangles containing information inside. In the Progressnet, they may appear in locations where they are most likely to fit and appear.

Clicking any ad will lead you to the Store (in the mobile version) or a random website hyperlink depending on what they say. If the ad says about a free product, clicking it will send you the Suspicious website.

After accessing pages a lot of times, ads will not appear.

You can block ads in Progressilla by pressing on the menu button.

Downloads[]

To download files, the player must collect segments -- Blue ordinarily, but Pink and Grey will also work only if their respective Bonus mode is active -- in Relax, Normal, or Hardcore. Any other game modes, including the randomly-occurring Matrix, Progress Pipes and 3D Screensaver, will not download any data.

On BarOS and Compact PC systems, as of 1.095, when attempting to initiate a download, a window saying "Not supported" will show up instead. Prior to that, you could actually download files on BarOS systems that has both a Browser and the Progressbar gamemode, such as H@ckgresh, you could even download other browsers, although doing that did nothing but open an empty "About" window in Barari.

In the Searchoo!! website, there are 3 possible random downloads that can be obtained. Only one random download can be queued up at a time.

  • A useless program with just a "Close" button.
  • The same as before, with now a "Bonus" button. The bonus is worth 512 points.
  • A program with 2 buttons that lets you flip the wallpaper horizontally and vertically respectively. Changes made to the wallpaper are kept unless the player can get this program again and decide to flip it into a different position, or the player switches to a different system, or if the game is shut down.

Alternate browsers such as Progressilla can be downloaded by the same mechanic.

To speed up downloads, the SYSTEM32 boss fight can be exploited and farmed, especially if it has a system file shield active, by repeatedly deliberately catching the Pink and Grey segments that it attacks with.

Evolution of User Experience[]

Depending on the system, the user experience of browsing the Progressnet can be affected. This can include the design of websites, modem speed, reliability, and browser behavior. All of these elements are listed here, along with how they behave in different eras.

Websites[]

First era[]

Most websites will appear to have a design last updated around the early-mid 90's. For proof, here are some websites that may reflect this:

  • Despite the Pyrus Pyrifolia Calculators website only showing BarOS 9, which was released in 1995, it actually says it was last updated in 1994, 1 year before said system was released.
  • While Progressbar's website shows products up to PB Whisper, the website's design actually says that it has been last updated in 1993, and weirdly, the company was called "Progress Industries (PDRD)", since Progressbar was originally created by Progressdata Refinement Department.
  • The Flint, MD and CRX websites feature earliest CPU's.
  • Progressilla's website says it's been last updated in 1992.
  • PB's website says it's been last updated in 1993.
  • Progressscape Navigator's website says it's been last updated in 1993.

  • In the Poodle site in Barium, the hyperlinks from the Searchoo!! website (including a PDRD Forum hyperlink) is used and the Lucky me and Unlucky me buttons are gone.
  • if you try to access Ping in first era, it says Server Not found, but if you scroll down, it says Wow! You found a server!

Second era[]

Most websites claim to be last updated around the early 2000's. Again, there are some websites that reflect this:

  • Despite the Pyrus Pyrifolia Calculators website showing products up to BarOS 10.III and pBar 65, it actually says that it was last updated in 2000, 16 years before BarOS 10.III was released.
  • PB's website says it's been last updated in 2001.
  • The nVD and At websites says that they've been last updated in 2001.

  • 9S's website says it has been last updated in 2001.
  • 3DFix's website says it has been last updated in 2001.
  • Despite the Progressbar website showing versions of Progressbar up to Progressbar 81, it actually says it was last updated in 2001, 10 years before Progressbar 81 was released.
  • The Flint, MD and CRX websites feature CPU's that were released between earliest and latest.
  • PBook is added, with a seemingly modernish look.
  • Poodle's homepage says it's been last updated in 2000.
  • Searchoo!!, Poodle and Progressilla say that they have been last updated in 2000.
  • Progressscape Navigator's website says it's been last updated in 2000.
  • PBay's website was been last updated in 2000.
  • Ping says that it has been last updated in 2000.
  • Searchoo!! also has links to PBook and ProgressScape Navigator.
  • The Poodle Barium website says that Barium is available for Progressbar XB, Wista and 7, but Progressbar 81 is not included.
  • The unknown websites hosted on Barpress now have a background that is either a solid colo(u)r or a tiled background with less visual elements.
  • In the Poodle site in Barium, there are image previews of the websites in the hyperlink area.

Third era[]

Most websites are updated around the current year. There are some websites that reflect this:

  • PBay's website was been last updated in 2026.
  • The nVD and At websites says that they've been last updated in 2026.
  • 9S's website says it has been last updated in 2026.

  • BEC's website says it's been last updated in 2026.
  • The Pyrus Pyrifolia Calculators website shows a banner reading "BarOS" at the way bottom of its homepage. In the BarOS page, versions from BarOS 11 to 15 are listed. In the Hardware page, "amazing things" from pBar 65 to pBar 2023 (B3) are listed.
  • The Progressbar website shows products from Progressbar 10 to 12 (calling them the "tenth generation"). It also says "Beige is the new browser", since Beige appears in Progressbar 1X onwards.
  • The Flint, MD and CRX websites feature latest CPU's.
  • Poodle's homepage says it's been last updated in 2026.
  • Progressscape Navigator's website says it's been last updated in 2026.
  • Searchoo!! and Poodle (the latter only in Barium) now have individual icons for PBook, the personal site, the "link you may like", Pbay, PDRD Forum and the random download.
  • Ping says that it has been last updated in 2026.
  • The ProgressScape Navigator website is dropped from the Searchoo!! website.
  • PBook's interface is refurbished.
  • The Poodle Barium website says that Barium is available for Progressbar 10, 1X and 11, but Progressbar 11.22 is not included.
  • The design of unknown websites hosted on Progresspix got updated to use a gradient background.

While not necessarily related to website design, websites now have an encrypted connection most of the time, represented with a padlock beside the URL. The Suspicious and Dangerous websites will not have a encrypted connection, represented by the padlock being unlocked.

Modem connection[]

First era[]

Since these systems are outdated, they use dial-up access. The player is not connected to dial-up by default, so they'll be offline at first. To be online, the player will have to connect to the Progressnet via dial-up, which emulates how people would connect to dial-up in real life.

After that, the player is connected to the Progressnet unsurprisingly, but since it's using a dial-up connection, the speed and reliability of a dial-up connection will be bad. For example:

  • Pages will have a slower loading time, and elements will noticeably pop in, including the background.
  • If there's images on a page, they will be loaded slower. Images appear either by wiping down from the top, or becoming un-pixelated.
  • Images can suddenly break while loading (or not load at all) and leave behind a broken image indicator.

In shorter terms: Pages load slower; elements and images can break or not load at all, thus causing a decrease in both speed and reliability.

Second and third era[]

An Ethernet connection is now used instead of dial-up. This means that the player will have a much faster connection, along with full reliability. For example:

  • Page loading times and image loading times will be greatly reduced.
  • Images and elements will no longer break.

For a summary, Ethernet connections are more faster and reliable than dial-up connections.

Browser behavior[]

First and second era[]

  • Cookies will be automatically accepted and will give you cookies without manually asking the user for confirmation.
  • Pop-ups may sometimes appear. They are the same as ads, and if you click them, you will get sent to the Store (in the mobile version) or a random website.
  • A feature to "ring the bell" on websites (which will be explained in the next section) has not been added yet.
  • A dialog box that causes the player to receive some spam messages in Mailbox has not been added yet.

Third era[]

  • Cookies need to be manually accepted, and it asks for confirmation every time. This change reflects changing regulations in the real world, where this type of manual cookie acceptance became required by law in the European Union through the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018.
  • A feature to "ring the bell" on websites has been added, which can give you browser points. It also asks for confirmation every time.
  • Pop-ups no longer appear on websites.
  • A dialog box may appear saying: "Please give your email to get some spam messages". Pressing Submit on the email input will cause the player to receive some spam messages in the Mailbox. This feature asks for confirmation sometimes when the player opens a website.

Trivia[]

  • When opening the program for the first time, a window appears asking the player if they want to set the current system's browser as the default Progressnet browser. The player can only press the "Yes" button, since the "No" button is disabled.
  • The warning messages that appear in the Dangerous and Suspicious websites are a reference to the "All your base are belong to us" meme.
  • When the player spams messages in PBook, they will get banned temporarily for a day.
  • When the PBook website is ready for an update to be posted, the text "Maximum 95 symbols..." will be shown.
    • The "95" part may be a reference to the name of the game: Progressbar95, which also appears in numerous other areas of the game such as several Bonuses and Achievements. Incidentally, the longest message possible, "[A picture of a lunch]", is only 22 characters.
  • The Troll's avatar on PBook borrows the icon from another Spooky House Studios app, Face Archer.
  • The middle of the Dangerous website has 3 bonuses. It often also has multiple cookies and, occasionally, a Bug or MagicHyperlink. Going after these comes with the risk of not deactivating the script in time.
  • If you try to access PBook in the first era, you will see the Under construction website with a gray background.
    • It also appears if you try to go to the Games page in the Spooky House website.
  • In beta versions of 0.96, when looking at untranslated PBook posts, the post will be “PBPost_##”.[3]
  • In PBook, Cosinus's name is derived from a portmanteau of Cosine and Linus.
  • Weirdly, BAR/X is the earliest BarOS system to have Barari. This is a paradox, since macOS didn't have the Safari browser until it was released in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.
  • Tom Barnard-Lee (whose name was seen in the Public Progress Plexus website) is based on Tim Berners-Lee.
  • Before a website loads fully, the throbber box with the logo at the top right animates, as contemporary versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator did. This box only appears in Progress Browser and ProgressScape Navigator in Progressbar 95 to 7 and Progressbar NOT 4.0 Server to Server 2081 (the latter browser excluding Progressbar Server 2081).
  • Broken images in the first era can also occasionally include Memes.
  • Surprisingly, the Offline page can be skipped in the first era of the Progressnet if the player uses a second or third era system and starts up the browser.
  • Some of the images that are found in the Travel photos website are actually wallpapers from Progressbar 10 and BarOS 10.III.
  • The Pbay website is unavailable in BarOS. If you go into the Pbay website in BarOS, the text in the website says: "Progresh computers are coming soon...".
    • It is supposed that in beta versions of 1.02, the Microchip, Pyrus -, PB Screwdriver and PB Wirecutter items show when using the Pbay website on BarOS systems.[verify]
      • Also, the Pyrus - computer costs less Progress Data.
    • Interestingly, opening the PBay website in Compact PC shows nothing inside, as there is a seperate physical Computer Shop for that.
  • The Suspicious website has a logon box with 1 asterisk. Attempting to logon in said website takes away all of your asterisks.
  • Prior to 0.9712, +B rowser in B OS was called +Browser.
  • Energy's website mentions that they make core system software. However, that is not true in real life, because Energy Star is a US government-backed symbol for energy efficiency.
  • The Energy and Progressive Microtrends websites have a copyright stamp from 2025, but it does not change regardless of the era.
  • The heading of the Hardware page in the third-era Pyrus website, "Amazing things", is a reference to Apple's "Wonderful Tools" video, which can be seen here.
  • Weirdly, the Browser Bonuses icons in classic BarOS systems are actually the Progressbar 1 bonus icons, and vice versa. This will be fixed in a later update.
  • TINFOILHAT_USER95 is Barny Fortschritt's username on the PDRD Theory Forum website.[4]
  • There are some paradoxical facts about several browsers existing in certain eras:
    • ProgressScape Navigator exists in the third era. This is because in the real life, the development of Netscape Navigator was halted on 28 December, 2007 and its updates was halted in January 2008.
    • Poodle Barium exists in the first era. This is because in the real life, Google Chrome was not released until 2 September, 2008.
  • In Progressbar XB, ProgressScape Navigator's logo is still at a 3D angle like all the other icons.
  • Attempting to search "searchoo" in Poodle will display a warning message saying "You broke the Progressnet!".
  • In version 1.0450, the Poodle Barium browser was downloadable but could not be accessed.
  • When using Poodle Barium version 2 in the first era of the Progressnet, the about box shows "Ver.2 [PB 9x compatible mode]".
  • The Poodle logo uses segment colors.
  • In the PDRD Forum website, Progress Browser is mentioned as "Progressnet Browser".
  • In the game files, there is an unused ProgressScape Navigator icon for Progressbar NOT 3.60.
  • Although all the other thumbnails in the 2nd era of the Poodle site in Barium and the Progressilla Homepage site correspond to the name of them, the Random download thumbnail is the 8-bit fan site instead.
  • You can't install any browsers in BarOS, despite the download ability is possible.
  • Progressscape, Progressilla, and Barium can be opened through ProgressDOS by navigating to the "PROGRAMS" directory, going to their respective subfolders, and typing the EXE name. Attempting to do this in systems too old to use the browser (Progressbar 3.14 or earlier), however, will bring up the error message "Cannot be run in DOS".
    • But, if you want to access the Progress Browser in systems that are Progressbar 3.14 or below (except for PB-DOS Shell), open the Devices menu and click to buy hardware. You can open Pbay in the browser if you did the method on a newer system.
  • There is a hard cap of 50 subpages in the browsing history, after which all will lead to dead ends. However, with each page having two links, there are approximately 2^50, or 1.125 quintillion (1.125 × 10^18), possible paths from the first unknown page to the fiftieth. This does not count pages with additional links, such as intersections, banner ads, or popups. It would be impossible to explore every possible path starting from a single Link of the Day within the current age of the universe, let alone a human lifetime.
  • An easter egg exists where there is a chance for Progressnet to be called "The button for the Progressnet" in Progressbar 95.
  • The Pong website is an easter egg of the word Ping Pong, another name for Table Tennis, as it is an alternate Ping website.
    • Searching Pong on the Ping search engine would return Ping instead of the said Pong website.
    • Despite being an easter egg website, it doesn't have a bonus, as it acts and functions the same as the Ping website.
    • In the third era, the website uses the Ping logo instead of the Pong logo. The said Pong logo stays unused in the game file.
  • There was a bug in 1.0939 where if you go to the Progressbar website in the first era and go to the PE link, you won't get to the PE section.
