| “ | Bin (Recycle bin) is your digital pet. You have to take care of him: clean, feed (by using trash files), tell him good words. Make Bin happy to get rewards! Otherwise it might be a nightmare | ” |

Bin is a digital pet (introduced in version 0.5605 and improved in subsequent versions) that can be taken care of. It used to be available fromProgressbar 95 onwards, all BarOS systems, all server systems, H@ckgresh and B OS. In Progressbar, Bin resembles the Windows Recycle Bin, while in BarOS and B OS, he resembles the Trash in MacOS/BeOS.
He can be fed files and have his happiness changed. He may also do other things (as shown below).
Behavior[]
Bin has 7 happiness levels:
- Mad
- Sad
- Depressed
- Neutral (default)
- Calm
- Carefree
- Happy
Bin has 4 hunger levels:
- Empty (default)
- Hungry
- Full
- Overeating
Feeding[]
Bin can be fed by:
- Dragging text files on the desktop or Filer files onto his icon.
- Deleting a file using the "DEL" or "RM" command in ProgressDOS/Terminus.
- Removing messages or marking them as spam in Mailbox.
Feeding Bin will cause a bulge effect to appear on his icon if he is overeating, and if he was previously empty, trash will appear overflowing from his icon. This trash will stay until he is cleaned.
Trash.txt[]
Trash.txt is the main food for Bin. When clicked, it opens a notepad program that states the following:
"This is a food for Bin. Drag it on the Bin icon"
By means of dragging this file to Bin, he will get "fed" with the file, earn 1 happiness point and will return one of these messages:
- Delicious!
- Flavorful!
- Yummy!
- Tasty!
- Om-Nom-nom!
- Yum-yum!
cheats.txt[]
Main article: Cheats
Once this file is fed to Bin, he will say "Fair play!", and will award you 500 bonus points as well as 1 happiness point. He will still return both the message and bonus even if the file has been opened once.
Mailbox[]
Main article: Mailbox
If you mark an email as spam correctly in Mailbox, Bin will say "The email spam was very tasty!" and will award you 250 bonus points as well as 1 happiness point. By removing a Mailbox message, Bin will also gain 1 happiness point, but Bin won't say anything and you won't get any bonus points.Cleaning[]
Cleaning Bin gives you 100[verify] to 25000 points depending on how many files he was fed (but if he's mad, he will give you negative points).
Bin will shine once he is ready to be cleaned. Bin will say one of these messages while he awaits cleaning:
- Please,clean me!
- Clean me!
- I'm full. Clean me!
If Bin remains ignored while ready for cleaning, he will eventually start screaming:
- CLEAN ME!!!
- CLEAN ME!!!CLEAN ME!!!
If Bin is ready to be cleaned, then dragging a file to him in an attempt to feed him will result in the file bouncing back to its previous position, Bin losing one happiness point and him saying one of these messages:
- I'm so full!
- I'm not hungry!
- I have a lot of files inside!
Pressing the "Clean" button while Bin is not in need of cleaning will cause him to say:
- I’m not ready for cleaning yet. Wait for tomorrow!
If the "Clean" button is defiantly pressed again, the button will be disabled and Bin will say:
- I've said that I'm not ready!
Happiness[]
Bin has a happiness meter that will naturally go up and down slowly, corresponding to how happy he is. His mood can still be manually changed by feeding him, caressing or razzing him, etc. Make sure to take care of Bin!
...if you hurt bin by razzing him or anyhow else, i'm sorry. For what? Oh, you'll see.
Changing happiness[]
Clicking the "Caress" button will give Bin one happiness point, and he will reply with one of the following messages:
- You are the best!
- Purr-purr!
- I love you!
- That was nice!
- Thank you!
Clicking on the Razz button will do the opposite; he will lose one happiness point and say one of the following messages:
- Boo-hoo!
- You are rude!
- Not funny!
- Sob...
- Why???
Questions[]
Sometimes, Bin will ask a question with 3 possible answers:
- one that will give a happiness point and make him say "You are the best!",
- one that will do nothing,
- and one that will cost a happiness point and make him say "You are so rude!".
The questions that he asks is in the Questions and Answers section.
Other[]
Bin will sometimes begin to sleep. Letting Bin wake up by himself after a random amount of time will earn him one happiness point. Waking up Bin (by either pressing him or trying to feed him) while asleep will make him lose one happiness point and say one of the following:
- Why did you wake me up?
- Hey, I was asleep!
- You woke me up! Why?
Occasionally, Bin will have a nightmare while sleeping. When he has a nightmare, his happiness meter will go down rapidly, and the player will need to quickly wake him up pressing or feeding him. If he wakes up on his own, he will lose one happiness point and say "I had a nightmare!". If successfully woken up by the player, he will instead say "I had a nightmare!" and then follow it with "Thank you for waking me up!", along with gaining one happiness point. Then, the player must hug Bin to make him feel better, which awards the player bonus points.
If the current day in the Calendar is Bin day, Bin will sometimes say "Today is my day!".
Surprisingly, rubbing the mouse cursor over Bin's icon will cause happiness icons to appear from his icon - but they do not count as happiness points. Doing this for long enough will actually make Bin go to sleep, and give a happiness point (i checked). This feature was added in version 1.02??[verify].
For some reason, it works as early as booting up the Progressbar 95 system for the first time, even though Bin is supposedly "shy" at the time. (This fact was found out on Windows XPite's testing copy.)
Questions and Answers[]
- I'm bored. Can you tell me a fairy tale? Please!
- Good: Yes! Of course! Once upon a time, there was a Bin...
- Neutral: Maybe next time
- Bad: Go away! Get a job!
- Do you love me? I need to know
- Good: Yes! I love you very much!
- Neutral: Not now...
- Bad: What a stupid question!
- Why files are made of zeros and ones?
- Good: Because they are digital, my dear
- Neutral: I'm busy
- Bad: You are zero!
- I feel a little bit lonely...
- Good: You are not! Here I am!
- Neutral: I'm busy
- Bad: So what?
- Who is better: Clippy or me?
- Good: Of course you! Clippy is annoying
- Neutral: Not now
- Bad: Clippy is much better!
- Am I annoying? Am I talking too much?
- Good: No! Simply you are very sociable. I like that!
- Neutral: Maybe next time
- Bad: Yes! You are talking and talking!
- I'm afraid of ProgressDOS very much! It's so dark down there!
- Good: Don't be! You are brave! ProgressDOS is not scary at all!
- Neutral: I'm busy
- Bad: Yes! ProgressDOS is full of monsters!!!
- I wonder why the sky on Progressbar95's intro is blue?
- Good: Because a normal sky is blue
- Neutral: Not now
- Bad: You are so stupid!
- Calculator said bad things about me! Now I'm sad
- Good: Oh, ignore him, he is stupid and rude!
- Neutral: Leave me alone
- Bad: He is right. Calculator is always right!
- Are we good friends?
- Good: Of course, we are! You are my best friend!
- Neutral: Leave me alone
- Bad: No, we are not! We are enemies!
If any of these questions are left unanswered, Bin will become sad.
Trivia[]
- Before version 0.5607, the answers for Bin's questions were always in the same order: Good, Neutral, Bad.
- In subsequent versions, the answers are shuffled.
- From PB-DOS Shell to Progressbar NOT 3.60, Bin doesn't appear in the desktop. This is because of the Recycle Bin being nonexistent until Windows 95 build 58s.
- If you try to delete the BIN directory in ProgressDOS, the screen will get filled with a repeating "BIN INSIDE BIN...", whereas if you drag the Bin folder to Bin in Filer, he will say "BIN INSIDE BIN...". Beginning with version 0.6004, you will also get the "Trash recursion" achievement for doing so.
- In Progressbar Chitown, Progressbar95 (ver.0.2) and versions before 0.5605, Bin shows in the desktop, but he is not a digital pet and tapping him will say "<Empty>". This was the case with older updates when he was not yet implemented.
- Both Caress and Razz buttons have a cooldown after using, taking a couple of minutes.
- Before 0.6004, Bin’s emotions were different:
- Angry
- Neutral
- Calm (default)
- Happy
- Very Happy
- If Bin is mad, he will say "I'm so mad! Here are some presents for you!!!" and various Clippies with dynamites will be spawned.
- If a ball falls into Bin, he will say "Goal!!!" and will give you 2500 points every time you do it.
- Bin will also ask the player if he can send notifications. If you press "Yes. Sure!", the game will occasionally send notifications from Bin when he is hungry or sad, besides bugs and inconvenient notifications. This question is only asked once unless you press "May be next time".
- However, in-app notifications can be enabled or disabled in the Sounds section of Settings.
- If you close the Bin task when Processes is running, Bin will disappear for 10 seconds. Afterwards, he will reappear saying one of the messages that he says when you razz him, and he will lose 1 happiness point.
- There is an unused message that could've been used as the third message that Bin says when you try to clean him if he isn't ready: "Please, let me alone!".
- However, there is a typo in the message, as either the word "let" is used incorrectly and should be replaced with "leave", or it should've been written as "let me be".
- Whenever you play on Progressbar 95 on levels before level 6, Bin is too shy to talk and tapping him will cause him to say "I'm Bin. And I'm shy. Let's talk later." In level 6, he will say these messages:
- My name is Bin. Please click me (before Clippy introduces Bin)
- Please feed me!
- Drag this file on me
- In BarOS and B OS, Bin will still talk about elements and programs that only exist in Progressbar systems, such as:
- ProgressDOS
- Calculator
- Clippy
- When the calculator pop-up appears, Bin will answer math problems sometimes if he is happy.
- Pink is probably Bin’s favorite color. If you collect a pink segment at 0%, Bin will say a pink message reading: "I like pink!" and will receive 1 happiness point.
- Furthermore, if Bin says something when the progressbar is pink, his message will also be pink.
- If you collect a gray segment at 0%, Bin will say "NULL".
- Beginning from version 0.9230, Bin thinks "Dreams" when sleeping. If he is having a nightmare, a red "Nightmare!" label will appear in the center of his thought bubble.
- Beginning from version 0.9260, Bin will greet the player after starting the game. The happier that he is, the better the greeting. Before said version, these greetings were found in the game files.
- Depressed: You again...
- Neutral: Hi...
- Calm: Hello!
- Carefree: Hello! I'm glad to see you!
- Happy: Hello! I'm happy to see you! I love you!
- Since version 0.9260, Bin will "y-a-wn" after waking up from sleeping.
- Sometimes, Bin dreams of "electric sheeps" (which is actually misspelled because the plural of sheep is still sheep) while he is sleeping. Attempting to wake him up by pressing the bubble will cause 1 happiness point to be sacrificed for 2019 points. The amount of points you receive is likely a reference to Blade Runner, which takes place in 2019 and is based on a book called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"
- Starting from version 0.9270, when Bin is happy, he will sometimes attract Clippy pop-ups to himself whilst saying the message "Pop-ups! Come here!". Once attracted, every Clippy will start saying "BIN!" instead of their usual sayings.
- This also impacts Progreshes in BarOS systems.
- In Progressbar 11.22, Server 2023, 12 and Server 12, Bin is in the taskbar.
- The objects inside the full Bin icon changes on some systems:
- BarOS 13: The orange flower which is used in some wallpapers.
- BarOS 14: The green hill used in the first and tenth wallpapers.
- B OS: Yellow balls with black circles or stripes.
- The design of the full Bin in B OS is a reference to the bee, which is an insect that shares its name pronunciation with the first part of the aforementioned system's name: B OS
- If you post "Bin is so cute!" in PBook, he will say "Thank you!" and adds +1 happiness points
- Bin in PBook can comment "Tasty!" when the user post "[A photo of a lunch]".
- Bin can post his mood in PBook too.
- If you give him a file when he is overeating. Bin will say "Overeating" and lose -1 happiness points, though the file you give him to eat is deleted.
- However, if you give him a cheat file when he is overeating. Bin will instead say "Fair play!" and the mood stays intact (possibly because he will get happiness point when he ate the file but lose happiness point when he is overeating). You can still get the bonus points though.
