some good came out of today...
despite frequent urges to throw my work computer out the window, i did manage to get some work done. though my plans were foiled yesterday because of the broken cryostat, i did manage to get to those things that have piled up for a day like today. filling in notebooks, taking pictures of slides, organizing pictures on the stooopid computer, de-cluttering my desk, and cleaning my bench. more to be done tomorrow, which should be fine. this work is good for rainy days.
i love my computer...
...at home.
the one at work sucks. yes, it's an Apple, and i'm trying to be nice to it, but it sucks. it's a flat panel G4 that *must* be a lemon because so many people just love the Mac. i am not one of them. oh, wait, what i do love is how the programs on OSX quit on me for no reason at all and then a little window appears 30 seconds later telling me "the application ---blah--- has unexpectedly quit". gee, thanks, i had no idea.
so this thing is supposed to be a super duper fast computer with all these great features. i have yet to see one of them. it took me 5 tries downloading Firefox today and then 2 more times trying to install it. it takes forever to open a jpeg in photoshop, even when i close all other applications. the internet connection is slow (but only on my computer), it takes forever to wake up, it takes forever and a day to open a program, and forever and a year to save a friggin excel file.
oh, how i wish we just had tons of money and i could buy a pc and have everyone else in science use a pc.

Plink!
i am so glad i went to san jose yesterday to help celebrate Heather's birthday. happy birthday, Heather! i got to see many good friends, some of whom i haven't seen in a few months, and got to meet some new folks, which is always good. since lunch was at blowfish sushi and many of you know i don't eat sushi, i had my good ol' chicken teriyaki over rice. they do a pretty good teriyaki there!
since there were many hockey-folk present, we had a good time anticipating the Burninator's trip to Vegas. still bummed i won't be able to skate with my friends, but i'm glad i'll be able to share their company for a fun filled weekend.
i returned to santa cruz and then headed over to Dave and Sofie's to watch the ever-so-cute Lucas and Vivian. the kids were great, as always, and Lucas spent most of the night asking questions and trying to find holes in any story i had. while she's super, little Viv (not SoopahViv) was a chatterbox and eagerly drew pictures for me and showed off her new pink footy pajamas. they again proved that they are the easiest 4 1/2 year old boy and almost 3 year old girl to babysit.
