and hiding in the sink later on

ahhh, yes, here's the penguin chillin' in the freezer!

ping! slosh. ping!

ahhh, the sounds of ice chunks falling into a tub of water.

such are the (limited) joys of defrosting the freezer at work. i had all of our boxes, reagents, etc. moved out to other areas by 10 or so this morning, then set up an air-blower to speed up the defrosting process. by the time i sat down to eat some lunch, ice chunks were falling from the top shelves, pinging off of the middle shelves, and sloshing/plopping into buckets i had set up at the bottom of the freezer. it was actually strangely musical.

so i was chatting with Viv until i had to get back to checking on the icebergs - she said maybe i'd find a penguin. oddly enough, i did! pictures to come.

anyhoooo, freezer is plugged in and cold again, boxes are moved back in, and i hope i don't have to do this again for a long time.

eggs and such

warning: rant.

good eggs and bad eggs have been the topic of discussion between me and a few friends lately. i like to give the benefit of the doubt, believe in humanity, and say that most eggs are good. but my goodness, what is up with the bad eggs lately. keep your bad egginess to yourself and don't let your rotten egg smell move into my surroundings!

okay, i'm done.

ooooh, bocce!

went with lab folks (minus Hema, plus Tiffani) to Bocci's Cellar last night for dinner to celebrate Nature Neuroscience's acceptance of Cory's paper. it was a nice, mellow dinner with very amusing live music - an acoustic guitar + flute combo. we made our way to the bocce area after dinner and had a great time. Ben and his girlfriend joined us and we had a good time teasing him about joining our lab. in all seriousness, we all really hope he picks us and i think we'll be pretty bummed if he doesn't. but bocce ball was fun! i can now better understand why old Italian men in Monterey do this so frequently at the Plaza!

fwickrrrrrrrr

dunno why i'm talking like Homestar at the moment...maybe because it's more fun to say fwickrrr than flickrrr. anyhoooo, thanks to Liz for adjustinating my foto feed! yay, now i hope to add to my stream of fotos so it's not just random signs.

hahaha, i forgot about this picture - Viv capturing the hairdo she said she wanted, but forgot she already had!

at long last, here's the picture of me holding Rosie at the Butterfly Pavilion. now that i think about it, hrmmm - where did my "i held Rosie" sticker go?

woo for us!

yay for us at work. i missed out on hearing the news in person on friday at work, but Cory (PhD student in the lab) has had his paper accepted in Nature Neuroscience! woot (+1)! awesome for Cory, also awesome for my boss who will now have this paper - and hopefully another one submitted this summer - on his resume as he approaches that almost-tenure time.

who knows when we'll go out and celebrate. maybe once the final version has been submitted and there's no more proofreading to be done. until then, another woot (+2)!

but, no hockey for me tonight. i was tempted to go but that smart part of my conscience (where are you most days?) tells me to stay home and rest. no woot (-1).

this post: net woot of +1.

a bit bettah

thanks, Viv and JediH for the well wishes. i'm upright and at work today, so i guess that's good! still bummed that i'm missing hockey tonight but i think it'd be best to take it easy, especially since i'm still pretty dehydrated and a bit woozy.

really, i just wanted to say woozy.

woozy.

heh.

ugh

made it up to SF to see Pinback on thursday night, got to see Sharon and Eric. sounds great, right? well, about half way through the concert i started to feel decidedly unwell. dizzy, tired, sore, feverish, achy. oh yeah, nauseous, too. i'd like to blame it on all the pot smoke around me, and while that probably didn't help matters, it likely wasn't the cause.

anyhow, i made it in to work on friday morning because there were some things that i really needed to get done; after about 90 minutes i decided i'd had it and headed home. i got hammered by some super nasty stomach virus that had me in bed all day friday and saturday. no fun. i was supposed to go to bbqs on saturday afternoon and evening but instead spent my time being dehydrated and feverish.

i'm feeling better today but definitely not well enough to go to hockey. bummer - i'll have to wait for another time to shoot on Susi in net! looks like i'm gonna miss out on tomorrow's AT2 game as well, but i'd rather spend the time getting better instead of relapsing.

ugh. what a no-fun weekend this has been.
