L’enseigne du barbier l’appelle? (Weekend Street/Reflections # 273)

Image

 Lyon, France

They were on the outside looking in. What do you suppose they were looking at? I wondered when he would turn around, spot that barber pole lined up next to his full head of hair, and decide it was time for a haircut. Maybe I was just being catty because I don’t have nearly that much hair myself!😻

Pause-Selfie (Weekend Street/Reflections # 272)

Image

 Lyon, France

It's hard to go very long without seeing someone stop and take a selfie.

Personally, I've never liked having my picture taken. The real irony? After more than 30 years online, I've never posted a single photo of myself—yet I've happily shared pictures of thousands of total strangers. 😕

A Weekend Street-Reflection (Weekend Street/Reflections # 271)

Two guys happened to be walking by as I took a picture of a reflective decoration at Dijon's Christmas Market on the weekend before Christmas.

Vietnam in Paris (Weekend Street/Reflections # 270)

Image

 Paris, France

I was drawn like a moth to a flame to this steamy window on a cold night in Paris. I don't remember exactly where it was or if the restaurant is still there. It was probably eleven or twelve years ago.

Transport en commun (Weekend Street/Reflections # 267)

As I age, I have less patience for crowds and for driving in traffic. Perhaps Tesla's FSD or Cybercabs will be the answer in the future?

Chez les bon vivants (Weekend Street/Reflections # 259)

Image
Lyon, France

"Les Bons Vivants est un lieu de vie où le partage et la convivialité sont maîtres mots."

According to their website, this restaurant is a place where sharing and conviviality are key words. I bet the guy on the phone's keywords were "You were supposed to meet me here at 8 o'clock." 😐

Lazy rain (Weekend Street/Reflections # 252)

Paris, France - from my archives

La pluie pose à terre des miroirs à étoiles. -Jules Renard

It’s rained almost every day this past week, which is unusual for Southern California. I'm thankful for the much-needed water, but sadly, I've been too lazy to take pictures of puddle reflections. In fact, I don't think I've taken a single picture in 2025. I need to find some inspiration!

Rain Over the Louvre (Weekend Street/Reflections # 236)

Image
Paris, France

Rain cascaded over Paris, tracing the ancient lines of the Louvre's stone facade and pooling around the glass pyramid, a modern heart beating amid the city's timeless pulse. The Arc de Triomphe du carrousel loomed faintly through the mist, its arches guarding echoes of revolutions past. The Seine, unseen but felt, murmured beneath the wet streets, weaving through a metropolis where every raindrop seemed to carry the weight of centuries—history, art, and resilience fused into the city's soul.

Un éclaboussure d'humour ? (Weekend Street/Reflections # 233)

Image
Paris, France

On a sunny March afternoon at a café, François' wife and daughter were lost in their coffee chat—until François plopped a newspaper hat on his head and belted out, "Vive la France, la Bastille est prise!" Raising his glass, he sloshed water everywhere, dousing his wife’s arm and soaking the table. His daughter turned beet-red, while his wife snapped, "Slow down, Mr. Hanriot—it’s only March!"

Image

 Paris, France

Debout devant son instrument qui semble prêt à s écrouler à chaque note, le musicien éméché a grogné, renversé un verre de vin, qui s'est brisé sur le sol et dit;

"Tu appelles ça de l’accordage ?" tandis que l’archet glissait pour la troisième fois il enchaîne "J’ai entendu mieux d’un contrebassiste qui a trop bu au bistrot !"

Soudain, les applaudissements fusent et public rit fortement, conscient que sa consommation d'alcool, son mépris de soi et son humour ironique étaient aussi célèbres que ses solos.

Un peu plus tard j'ai ri dans ma barbe en sirotant mon vin.

Oh, quel spectacle !

(Standing in front of his instrument, which looked like it was about to fall apart with every note, the half-drunk musician grumbled, knocked over a glass of wine, and said:
“You call that tuning?” as the bow slipped for the third time. He followed up with, “I’ve heard better from a drunk double bassist in a dive bar!”
Suddenly, the crowd erupted in applause and laughter, well aware that his boozing, self-deprecation, and sarcastic humor were as legendary as his solos.

A bit later, I chuckled to myself while sipping my wine.

Man, what a show!)
