Monday, Monday, rain, quiet

A peaceful day today. Rain all day. I did get to the store for urgent nonfood supplies I can't get from Misfits, dang it.

I've lost track of how long it's been since I shopped in person. And they had plenty of eggs, got my usual brand, less than $5, not so bad. The most expensive, free range ones were about $7. A bit more than I spend on eggs, but not outrageous.

Home again by 10, before the rain got heavier.

And after it was just jigsaw, really liking fitting the flowers in

and reading Barbara Pym, Jane and Prudence, what a ghastly woman Jane is, and how she makes her vicar husband's life harder. And the inappropriate questions she fires at Prudence.. and how devious Jessie is, but how hugely entertaining the whole cast is.

Bit of knitting, bit of resting, figuring out what to cook for supper, Misfits box not due till Thursday, when I'll have sn embarrassment of edible riches.

I was at a meeting of my nonprofit once, when one of the professional staff used that expression, without the edible bit, and a board member burst out "there's nothing to be embarrassed about! We're doing well!" Evidently unfamiliar with the expression. Oh well.

Nobody was prepared to explain, though it was stunning that someone with an Ivy league degree didn't get it. And a lot of other things, too  Looking back, probably a legacy admission from a big donor family.  I know a lot more now about that family  than I did then, when I was a bit more naive. Moving right along..

So, on to food and one of my favorite kinds of meals, the kind you pick up and eat.

Pita bread filled with onions, mushrooms, potatoes, spinach. Everything that's lying around.

Enough for two more meals, bringing me to Thursday and Misfits delivery. Yogurt and blueberries for dessert.

All's very well around here, and I hope with you, too. Happy evening everyone!

Late July, Corn High

First corn from my local farm today, and since Handsome Son is expected for dinner, I thought it would be good to make a sort of corn thing with three ears of corn, off the cob, a job I hate doing, but anyway,  farm eggs, from another farm, cheese, sea salt and white pepper, and a bunch of thyme from my front yard.

Added in a can of chickpeas for ballast.  I might have used tomatoes, but I don't get them till tomorrow, and well, I ate all of this week's..I might make a batch of hot biscuits to go with, though, come to think of it. And I'm serving steamed buttered green beans from yet another farm, courtesy of a friend.  Who also gave me another squash..yet another.

Nice glass of sangria, summer sort of wine, will accompany this Lucullan shebang.

Dessert will be build it yourself, fresh blueberries and peaches from the farm this morning, with vanilla yogurt.

Pot of English Breakfast tea, snarling as it comes out of the pot, will round off the proceedings.

On one of these very hot and humid nights, it's very good to serve yourself a helping of frozen mango slices and frozen blueberries. They act like icecream and candy at the same time, perfect. My mangoes came from yet another friend, and I sliced and froze them right away.  The ones I didn't use to make mango preserve, that is.

Supper before the Bite Club meeting

Since this is a new group, I have no idea what to expect.  They encourage people to bring food they've cooked, but since I didn't actually cook anything from Alice Waters, her book being nice but not new to me, I decided I'd bring a handful of fresh late season herbs to share.

So I can do that, bringing sage, lemon thyme, English thyme, peppermint, spearmint, oregano and hope people are interested.

Meanwhile, I picked up my farmshare this afternoon, and found some lovely late season big tomatoes.  Perfect for a quick and favorite supper:  diced big, with cubes of sharp cheddar, two eggs broken over, kosher salt, black pepper, sprig of lemon thyme laid on top, half an hour at 380 F.

Yet another dish in search of a name.  Possibly Welsh rarebit.  Or Independence for Scotland, depending on how you feel.

And perfect with a slice of toast from that big loaf I made with the wholewheat and a.p. and oat flours.  It has a lovely crumb and a great crust. Must remember that combo.

The wine is just for the shoot -- I'll drink it when I get home again, not wishing to drive after even a single glass of wine.

Field and Fen Forages at the Farm for Food

Another invented dish today:

cubed red sweet peppers, chopped green beans, cubed firm tofu, sharp cheddar, chunk of basil pesto, two eggs beaten with Italian seasoning and kosher salt.  Buttered dish, all poured in gently, topped with several curry leaves.  Baked at 375 for 25 minutes.

Very good lunch.  Originally designed to be two meals, but I ended up enjoying all of it.  Life's short.  Speaking of which, note the upcycled flower vases and other things pressed into service to hold utensils.  Much more appealing than the old plastic dishwasher insert they are replacing.

Stitching on my butterfly this morning.  Playing music this afternoon.  Cooking in between.
