Emotes are a feature available across all incarnations of WolfQuest that permit players to realistically and non-verbally communicate with each other solely through the use of their avatar's body language. The implementation and selection varies across major revisions of each version of the game.
Emotes radial menu as it appears in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the player is given a much broader selection of emotes for their wolf to use in contrast to the game's predecessors. In total, there are twenty-four (24) emotes divided between four (4) subcategories. Only the emotes in the Voice section have accompanying audio. NPC wolves including strangers, dispersals, the mate and offspring may also utilise emotes both casually and during courtship.
To access the emotes interface, the player must press and hold the
key on their keyboard or, if using a controller, pressing and holding
D-Pad Up. This will open a radial menu. The player may then select which emote to use by hovering their mouse over it and clicking or hovering and releasing to perform the highlighted emote. On a controller, the player instead uses their
Right Stick to highlight an emote and releasing D-Pad Up to perform it. The top level of seven (7) emotes most easily accessed from the base emotes menu are defined as favorites. All control schemes will display the
emotes arrow to further indicate the player's highlighted selection. Some have key bind shortcuts.
Emotes interface as it appears in WolfQuest: Classic.
In WolfQuest: Classic, emotes returned with the release of version 2.7.1 and were both improved and expanded upon, having been given its own toggleable interface and hotkey support. Furthermore, all emotes are equally available in both single-player[1] and multiplayer; a vast improvement over its Legacy predecessor, where some emotes were only exclusive to one mode or the other. Interactive animations that were available prior to the introduction of the emotes patch remain usable via their respective key binds referenced in tutorials.[2]
The interface -- toggleable by pressing the E key -- grants player-wolves their choice from a selection of eight (8) different emotes. Some are accompanied by sound, while others are devoid of any audio. Most are recognisable from the social arena and from the previous implementation of key bind-only emotes, and others are brand new.In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, there is no emotes interface. Instead, emotes have limited availability through key binds, with some only being accessible in single player and others being restricted to multiplayer. Owing to its funded nature and combined time and budgetary constraints, the pool of emotes is very small throughout the original game's run.

Favorites
In the Anniversary Edition, emotes the player uses most often can be saved to the top level menu as favorites, indicated by the top level of seven (7) emotes. In doing so, these can be performed more easily by using their assigned hotkeys without needing the use of the Emotes panel.
The player can manage or redefine their favorite emotes by right-clicking them to access a context menu. To add new favorites when the top level menu is full, set favorites must first be removed. Favorited emotes are easily performed using the
-
keys. NumPad keys do not work unless rebound by the player.
On a controller, only one favorite emote has quick access and can be used by pressing
D-Pad Right. By default, this is Growl. It can be changed by highlighting a replacement emote and pressing the
Right Stick.
Redefined favorites can be reset to their default emotes by removing the appropriate FavoriteEmote registry key values. For players wishing to revert without deleting or modifying registry data, the default favorites are:
- Airplane Ears
- Avert Gaze
- Tail Wag
- T4
- Play Bow
- Roll
- Aggressive Snarl
In Classic, while there is no favorite emotes system, there is a way to perform emotes more quickly without using its interface. While holding down the E key, the number keys can also be used to play emotes by pressing keys 1-8. The emotes panel does not need to be on-screen to perform hotkey emotes.
In Legacy versions, due to how few usable emotes existed in the original game, there was no favorite emote system or hotbar in place.
Key Binds
Not all emotes are accessed solely through the emotes panel. The following can be performed by using either a specific key input or a combination of key inputs.
| Emote | Keybind |
|---|---|
| Growl | |
| Aggressive snarl | + |
| Whine[4] |
| Emote | Keybind |
|---|---|
| Growl | G key |
| Whine | Y key |

Bugs
Anniversary Edition Bugs
- In a closed 1.0.4 beta, the roll emote experienced a slight issue, wherein any wolf performing the emote would slide backwards for the duration of its animation being played. Although it was harmless and hilarious to see player-wolves and NPC-wolves experience this effect, it was fixed prior to the release being made public.[6]

Trivia
Anniversary Edition Trivia
- Hotkey support for favorite emotes was added as an improvement in 1.0.5e.
- As of 2.0.0, subordinate packmates and the mate may be seen performing the Ears Pricked emote. This has been found to correlate to predation attempts and raids, so it pays to heed their subtle hints if/when the player sees this emote performed.
Classic Trivia
- Some emotes originate from the high-poly model used in the social encounter arena, while some are new or separated to their own animations based on the existing high-poly animations.
- Play bow and Wag tail are not new; they will retain their original key binds (J and K, respectively) and be available from the emotes panel.
- Growl was initially a sound with no animation. As of patch 2.7.1, this is no longer the case.
- Whine is audio-only without its own animation, and will remain as-is.[7]
- With the exception of howl, play bow and wag tail, all other emotes were not available until the initial 2.7.1 patch.
