Remains refers to an object category.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, remains are a combined category shared by skulls and shed antlers implemented in Early Access update 1.1.0d. All remains emit the same chino Remains scent spore spores and provided the setting for it is enabled, they will glow when viewed in scent view.

Remains function similarly to collectibles in that they may be discovered, picked up and carried around. However, they are not identically alike. Remains fall under their own separate criteria for achievements, and unlike the fixed spawn locations for collectibles and interactable props, remains utilise randomised spawn locations applied during world generation. This re-rolls for every new game started and for every migration between game maps. Antlers utilise both randomisation and hotspots, while skulls utilise only randomisation. As a result, it is not possible for anyone to create a reliable map of their locations.

Spawns may exist in all game maps except Lost River (Classic). They appear year-round in all game modes, single-player quests and during online play in multiplayer missions.

In WolfQuest: Classic, the only remains seen in-game is a moose antler in Slough Creek.

In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, there are no remains in-game.

Miscellaneous[]

In the Anniversary Edition, there are few immoveable remains in-game independent of the scented, portable variances.

In Amethyst Mountain, there is an elk skeleton (marker 11 on the Landmarks interactive maps) due east and a bit north of the Fossil Forest. This is believed to have existed since before the game's Early Access launch and to this day, the developer has not commented on it. Prior to 1.1.0f, there used to be a gray wolf skull on top of a fossilized tree stump towards the top of Fossil Forest. This instance was non-interactable; immoveable, scentless and purely decorative. It was retired from the game as of 1.1.0f to reduce confusion between it and carriable wolf skulls.

In the expanded Lost River add-on content, there was once a domestic cattle skull somewhere in the grazing fields of Crooked Creek Ranch. This instance was non-interactable; immoveable, scentless and purely decorative. Just like the wolf skull landmark, it was retired from the game as of 1.1.0f to reduce confusion between it and carriable domestic cattle skulls.

Bugs[]

Anniversary Edition Bugs

  • The expanded Lost River add-on content game map sees occasional conflicts with remains spawning logic.
    • During the 1.1.0d public beta, skulls could potentially spawn in the water tower, rendering those affected unobtainable. It is unknown if this has been patched.
    • Skulls may sometimes spawn in parts buildings, whether partially or fully. In some cases they can still be retrieved, but in others — especially if it's a building with no accessible interior — they will be unobtainable.
    • Remains that spawn in, are left on frozen water planes, or are dropped in water are often considered lost and likely cannot be retrieved if they sank to the bed of deep water. In shallow water, retrieval of sunken remains has a greater chance of success provided it displays the Interact icon icon. In such cases, the player can attempt to either pick up an object wherever their wolf is able to remain grounded, or they may wait until winter. Water that is frozen over can be walked on, and any interactable objects beneath the ice are able to be picked up with ease if they are still within interaction range.

Trivia[]

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • Their scent color is similar to snowshoe hares', but they are easily distinguishable by their uniquely-identifiable hollowed-out circle scent spores.
  • Mates who go on excursions alone can sometimes bring home antlers.[1] — possibly as of 1.1.1g.[citation needed] This may be a personality-influenced behavior.
    • It is unknown if they will pick up remains in close proximity while accompanying the player-wolf.
  • It is unknown whether remains use predetermined spawn odds or fully randomised spawn odds.
    • Based on playtesting, cougar skulls were found to be the most scarce remains objects.
    • Based on playtesting, bison skulls and grizzly bear skulls were found to be the most abundant remains objects.
