Tracks (or footprints, pawprints, hoofprints or similar) are the individual pieces marking a trail left behind by most roaming-wandering creatures in WolfQuest, with main exceptions being anything flighted, aquatic, or otherwise scentless. The implementation varies between major revisions.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, tracks or footprints are only made visible while in scent view mode. They will be left in the path of land-dwelling creatures as they navigate the game world. The player-wolf and their packmates, too, will leave a trail of footprints in each individual's own wake; those generated by the player's own wolf will diminish faster than those generated by any other animal.

Generated footprints persist so long as its source animal remains alive and spawned. Tracks belonging to any deceased animals will quickly fade and despawn a short time later after it has perished. In multiplayer, footprints belonging to other player-wolves approximately share about the same fade rate as NPCs.[citation needed] Footprints generated by NPCs fade after four (4) in-game hours have elapsed if the entity does not despawn before that time frame passes. For packmates, the minimum span of time for trails before they expire is instead two (2) in-game hours while nomadic, and up to four (4) in-game hours for patrols while dependent on a home site.

In WolfQuest: Classic, tracks appear as non-descript spheres, orbs or circular sprites. Only their color changes to represent the animal they originate from.

In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, tracks appear as non-descript spheres, orbs or circular sprites. Only their color changes to represent the animal they originate from.

Trails[]

In the Anniversary Edition, the game utilises 2D sprites to represent a variety of hoofprints and pawprints correlating to the species on the ground while the player-wolf is in scent view which, along with color and spore shape where available, can be used to identify the animal and whether it is prey or competitor/predator. Tracks generate trails which can then be followed all the way to its source. Every step generates a new set of tracks.

In Classic, animals don't leave unique footprints behind. In their place are spores emitted as a trail leading predators directly to their prey, or in the case of bolder players, leading predators to their competitors. Spore information will only be visible while it is not raining; larger spores, called plumes, indicate the location of carcasses and will never disappear for as long as the carcass emitting the plume remains spawned.

In Legacy versions, animals don't leave footprints.
