Traps are a risky activity |
Traps are a hazard placed by humans with the intention to do harm. Deterrents can either serve as warnings to startle, ward away or warn, or as decoys to bait and lure.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, traps are utilised in the expanded Lost River add-on content game map. Within the protection of Yellowstone National Park, there are no human hazards in Amethyst Mountain and Slough Creek. In the Hellroaring Mountain add-on content, hazards are only present beyond the park boundary in the fall hunting season. Anything crossing beyond the northern side of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness border is fair game, while anything crossing south will be safe and left alone.
In Lost River, most will be used by the rancher family occupying the Crooked Creek Ranch situated in the south-east corner in its expanded add-on content counterpart. There are no human hazards in its classic counterpart.
Deterrents and decoys are mixed bag. Some are harmless, designed solely to startle and repel; others are harmful, designed with the intent to injure, kill or directly assist with the killing of unsuspecting prey or clever predators undaunted enough to continue to encroach into places they ought not go and would otherwise do well to avoid. In-game, NPC prey and predators steer clear of both categories and won't be seen interacting with anything listed in the subpages unless otherwise noteworthy enough to mention in their own sections. In WolfQuest: Classic, there are no traps. The only human hazard in Slough Creek is the rancher's shotgun should the player-wolf overstay their welcome in the unnamed cattle ranch. Other than the wildlife, there are no dangers in Lost River.

Trivia[]
Anniversary Edition Trivia
- Once a particular event for a trap or non-trap has been triggered, it will persist every night thereafter.
- Consequently, traps and deterrents may stack on top of each other, making cattle hunts progressively harder with each visit.
- Some stacked combinations may make hunting near-impossible depending on where the herd spawns.
- The order of trap and deterrent spawns is random, aside from the guard dog.
- The guard dog is a higher priority deterrent. On average, it is unleashed on the second or third night-time visit.
- It will stay with the cattle herd even on nights when they are locked in the homestead paddock. However, it does not follow along with the herd if it moves away from its protector.
- The guard dog is a higher priority deterrent. On average, it is unleashed on the second or third night-time visit.
- Most nights will see only one new trap or deterrent added. Occasionally, if certain conditions align, two will spawn instead of one.
- All traps appear in both single-player and multiplayer modes.
- The inactive ankle trap in the hunting lodge foreshadows the active ankle traps used by the ranchers on later excursions into the cattle ranch.
- Despite having a 3D model, the ankle trap has no visible model while set on the ground as an active trap. It will only appear once it has clamped onto the player-wolf's leg. An active ankle trap also has no scents to warn the player-wolf of its presence, placing it amongst the most difficult traps to avoid.
- Scavengers either do not spawn near or appear to avoid the ranch perimeter completely.
- There are recorded cases of foxes, coyotes and cougars consuming poisoned meat chunks taken from their source carcasses and placed down elsewhere as bait in-game. They will succumb to the effects of the poison(s) it is laced with soon after.
- This trick serves only as a short-term solution to an endless lifelong problem. If they are at all drawn to poisoned meat chunks, it will not work against animals known to possess a health cap, such as adult grizzly bears of either sex. It will work against their offspring (spring, summer, and fall) because they do not possess any health cap.
- If they were to eat them, it is likely that rival wolves would suffer the same fate. (Untested // pending verification.)
- It is unknown what will happen if a golden eagle, bald eagle or raven were to consume from a poisoned meat chunk. (Pending testing // further documentation. Unknown if they have health or are health capped.)
- There are recorded cases of foxes, coyotes and cougars consuming poisoned meat chunks taken from their source carcasses and placed down elsewhere as bait in-game. They will succumb to the effects of the poison(s) it is laced with soon after.
- Multiple tubemen may spawn, further supporting that they are indeed set up by the ranchers to help deter predators.[1]
Legacy Trivia
- Despite old rumors claiming otherwise, there are no hunters implemented in-game. These versions of the game take place deep within Yellowstone, where hunting and trapping are illegal.
