Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. Click to download BOM template To avoid file missing, please include all files into one folder and compress it into .zip or .rar format.

ENEPIG PCB: Soldering, Wire Bonding & Finish Review

Plan an ENEPIG PCB around the connections it must support: soldered components, wire bonds or a reviewed mixed assembly. Define pad groups, the assembly sequence and required evidence before releasing the finish.

At a glance: ENEPIG combines electroless nickel, electroless palladium and immersion gold over copper. The additional palladium layer changes the finish system; it does not eliminate the need for process qualification.

Specify the finish for the actual connection

Choose by connection method

For a soldering-only board, first establish whether ENIG or another qualified finish meets the requirements. ENEPIG deserves specific review when the board combines soldering and wire bonding, or a customer specification calls for the three-layer finish. State which pads serve each connection method.

Identify the wire material, diameter and bonding method for bonding applications. A supplier process description cannot substitute for trials with the actual board and assembly route. Request a feasibility review before treating every visible gold pad as interchangeable.

Control three layers as three layers

The nickel, palladium and gold have separate functions and measurement requirements. Record each layer against the agreed drawing and specification revision. Palladium processes may produce essentially pure palladium or phosphorus-containing deposits; the approved chemistry and process window matter.

Use the thickness workbench for one layer at a time. It converts the units and summarizes three entered readings without deciding acceptance. Preserve the raw report, measurement locations and method rather than combining nickel, palladium and gold into one average.

Protect bonding pads through assembly

Define how bonding pads will be protected during printing, soldering, cleaning, handling and storage. The surface that reaches the bonder can differ from the freshly finished bare board. Include the planned thermal sequence and any cleaning restrictions in the request.

An IPC-hosted investigation documents bonding and pad-lift challenges on ENEPIG boards. The practical lesson is to qualify the complete route. A good coating thickness result alone does not demonstrate an acceptable bond, and a visually clean surface does not establish chemical cleanliness.

Request a finish and evidence package

Send controlled fabrication data, an annotated pad map and the intended PCB assembly flow. Identify any wire-bond trials, sample records or lot documentation you need. Ask PCBSync to confirm the offered scope, unresolved requirements and acceptance basis in writing.

Keep qualification evidence distinct from routine shipment records. A representative bonding trial answers a different question from an incoming thickness report. Agree which evidence belongs with every lot and which must be repeated after a material, finish process or assembly change.

Keep the review concrete

Include these requirements in your enquiry

01

Fabrication files and pad groups marked by connection use.

02

Wire material, diameter and bonding method where applicable.

03

Finish specification revision and individual layer requirements.

04

Assembly, cleaning and storage sequence.

05

Qualification samples and requested test evidence.

06

Quantity, delivery target and required lot documentation.

Mark unresolved items explicitly. Ask the quotation to identify proposed exceptions, required customer approvals and any inspection or special-process charges that remain open.

ENEPIG PCB FAQ

Is ENEPIG always better than ENIG?

No. Choose against the connection method, qualified process, evidence and cost. ENIG may be appropriate for a soldering-only design.

Does ENEPIG guarantee wire bonding?

No. The wire, bonding method, pad condition and complete assembly route require qualification.

Is ENEPIG free from all corrosion or pad-lift risk?

No. Process quality and interface integrity still require control. Avoid treating a finish name as a zero-defect guarantee.

Can PCBSync review a mixed SMT and bonding project?

Send the pad map, connection requirements and sequence. The quotation should identify the reviewed fabrication and evidence scope.
