Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. Industrial PCB Manufacturing for Controls, Drives and Instrumentation

A PLC input card, an Ethernet interface and a motor-drive board need different manufacturing reviews. Tell PCBSync where your industrial PCB operates, what it connects to and what records must accompany delivery. Start with bare-board fabrication or include assembly, programming and agreed testing.

The design decision

Specify the operating environment and acceptance requirements first. “Industrial PCB” is an application category, not a universal material grade, temperature range or IPC class.

Choose the relevant path

Start with the board’s job

PLC and remote I/O

Channel types, field voltages, isolation boundaries and connector loading.

Review channel tests, calibration requirements and accessible test points.

Industrial Ethernet

PHY, interface speed, connector/magnetics arrangement and reference planes.

Keep protocol conformance separate from bare-board acceptance.

Motor control

Power-stage current paths, switching edges, sensing and heatsink interface.

Define thermal and electrical verification at the intended operating conditions.

Instrumentation

Small-signal inputs, noise budget, grounding and calibration access.

Document what the assembly test measures and how results are recorded.

Work with your own inputs

Decisions before fabrication

Build the specification around the installation

01

Start at the cabinet, connector and load

Record the temperature at the board, the enclosure cooling arrangement, mounting points and cable exits. A cabinet specification does not necessarily describe the temperature beside a switching device. Identify vibration, condensation, cleaning chemicals and contamination where they actually reach the assembly.

Divide the board into low-level measurement, communications, power conversion and field connections. These boundaries help the design review focus on return paths, connector protection, insulation and access for inspection. Include the enclosure or interface drawing when those constraints affect panelization or assembly.

02

Choose construction from the electrical and mechanical job

Multilayer PCB construction can provide routing space and controlled reference planes. Heavy copper may help a current path, while an insulated metal substrate can suit a particular heat-flow arrangement. Neither choice resolves every problem: conductor geometry, dielectric insulation, soldering and mounting still need review.

Use laminate data for the exact grade and test method. Glass-transition temperature is not a continuous operating-temperature rating. If you need a substitute material, ask for its effect on stackup, impedance, expansion, assembly exposure and qualification before approving the change.

03

Turn “tested” into a deliverable

Agree which checks apply to bare boards and which apply after assembly. Netlist electrical testing, optical inspection, X-ray review and functional testing answer different questions. A powered functional test needs a released sequence, fixtures, firmware and pass/fail limits.

For repeat orders, identify the records that let your team compare lots: board revision, component substitutions, programming version, test-program revision and serial or batch identification. Ask how exceptions and repair decisions will be returned for approval. Avoid a quotation that silently treats all testing as a single line item.

04

Plan the second order while building the first

Industrial equipment often remains in service through component revisions and supplier changes. Separate prototype learning from the release package intended for production. Save the approved BOM alternatives, fabrication drawing, PCB assembly notes and first-build findings together.

Tell us the expected release quantities and replenishment pattern. A useful cost comparison includes setup, tooling, test development, inspection and logistics on the same scope. The workbench uses your own assumptions; it does not invent a production price or promise a lead time.

These real photographs from the PCBSync media library show physical board construction and connection features. Appearance alone does not verify copper weight, internal via treatment, drilling depth or lot acceptance; request corresponding drawing and inspection records.

Engineering handoff

The information that moves a quote forward

A useful quotation starts with a controlled revision and clear open questions. Prepare these items, and mark anything still being decided.

Build an inquiry brief
  1. Fabrication package and controlled stackup revision
  2. Board environment, enclosure and mounting drawing
  3. BOM with approved substitutions and sourcing constraints
  4. Assembly, coating and programming instructions where required
  5. Inspection and functional-test scope with acceptance limits
  6. Quantity, release schedule and required traceability records
Before you enquire

Industrial PCB: practical questions

Does an industrial PCB always require IPC Class 3?

No. The product owner specifies the applicable standard, revision, class and any additional requirements. An industry label does not select a class or guarantee field life.

Can PCBSync quote both the bare board and assembly?

Yes. Identify the fabrication-only and populated-board quantities, and provide the matching BOM and assembly data so those scopes can be reviewed separately.

Is conformal coating required for every industrial board?

No. Select it for the actual exposure and product requirements. Define the material, covered areas, masking, inspection and repair expectations; coating is not a substitute for an enclosure or correct insulation design.

What helps an engineer return a useful quote?

A controlled drawing, manufacturing data, quantity and clear acceptance requirements. For an incomplete design, mark the undecided items and ask for a feasibility review before committing the production configuration.

Tell us what needs to be built

Send the board revision, quantity, requested delivery and the manufacturing scope you need. Include unresolved technical questions so the quote can distinguish confirmed work from items awaiting approval.

Prepare the fabrication drawing, Gerber or ODB++ data, quantity and delivery requirement. Identify copper weights, critical geometry, layer spans, fabrication tolerances and requested inspection records. Ask us about an NDA or file-transfer arrangement before sharing restricted files.
