Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. PCB Solderability Testing: Define the Surface, Method and Evidence

Review whether the specified solderable surfaces wet under the agreed test conditions. Prepare a clear test request for printed boards, component terminations or a storage-related investigation.

At a glance: Solderability concerns wetting under defined conditions. It is different from resistance to soldering heat, finished-joint inspection and functional testing of an assembled product.

Define the test before approving the result

Identify the surface and the question

State whether the request concerns printed-board pads or plated-through holes, component leads or another solderable termination. Record the finish or plating, supplier and lot identity, manufacturing date if known, packaging and storage history. Keep as-received samples traceable to the material under investigation.

Describe the trigger: incoming inspection, extended storage, a finish change or an observed assembly problem. Include photographs and process history where available. PCBSync can review the request with your PCB manufacturing or PCB assembly project and confirm the proposed method, specimen requirements and reporting scope.

Select the applicable method before choosing settings

J-STD-003 addresses printed-board solderability, while J-STD-002 addresses component leads, terminations and related items. Identify the applicable document and revision with the customer. Different methods produce different evidence, such as visual wetting assessment or a wetting-force response over time.

Do not apply one generic temperature, immersion time, flux or wetting percentage to every finish and specimen. Method details, conditioning and acceptance criteria must come from the approved procedure. A solderability result does not by itself establish that the complete assembly design and soldering process will be successful.

Plan representative specimens and preserve history

Agree how samples or coupons represent the relevant production lot and finish. Document any conditioning, cleaning or other preparation because it can change the surface being evaluated. Testing may consume or alter samples; confirm disposition and reserve material before releasing the plan.

Use the specimen-allocation tool with an already approved matrix. It multiplies lots, separate conditions and specimens per cell, then adds controls once for the whole plan. It does not select a statistically sufficient sample size, establish an AQL scheme or justify combining different lots.

Interpret the report alongside assembly evidence

Request specimen identity, method/revision, preparation and conditioning details, test conditions, actual observations and the acceptance basis. Where a force-time method is used, retain the relevant curve and interpretation. Make exceptions or departures from the agreed method visible in the report.

If a production joint is problematic, review the broader context: surface condition, solder paste or flux, thermal process, geometry and handling. A solderability test can help answer a particular question without proving every possible cause. Send the requested scope and existing evidence to PCBSync for a reviewed quotation and next-step discussion.

Keep the review concrete

Include these requirements in your enquiry

01

Surface type, finish/plating and lot identity

02

Manufacturing, packaging and storage history

03

Applicable method, revision and acceptance criteria

04

Representative specimen / coupon plan

05

Conditioning, destructive use and sample disposition

06

Requested report, quantity and timing

Mark unresolved items explicitly. Ask the quotation to identify proposed exceptions, required customer approvals and any inspection or special-process charges that remain open.

Answers before requesting a quote

PCB Solderability Testing FAQ

Does a solderability pass prove good assembled joints?

No. It addresses the specified surface and test conditions. Assembly geometry, process settings and later inspection remain relevant.

Which standard applies to a bare PCB?

J-STD-003 addresses printed-board solderability. Confirm the required revision, selected method and customer requirements for the actual test.

Can storage affect solderability?

Storage and handling can affect surface condition. Provide the known history so the test plan and result can be interpreted appropriately.

Does the tool choose my sample size?

No. Enter the counts from an approved specimen plan. The tool only checks the allocation arithmetic.

Discuss your PCB Solderability Testing requirements

Send the scope you want reviewed

Add your test-scope brief or planning scenario from the tools above. Include the controlled product revision, requested quantity, required timing and open acceptance questions.

Identify the surface finish or component plating, lot, specimen type, storage history and reason for testing. Include the method/revision, acceptance source, specimen plan and preparation restrictions. Retain the lot and specimen identities in the controlled PCB and test records so the result is traceable to the supplied surfaces. Agree sample consumption and return/disposal instructions before work.
