Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. Rigid-Flex PCB Capabilities: Review the Complete Construction

Specify rigid-flex capability as a combination of regions, materials, features and acceptance criteria. Use this page to prepare a manufacturing review that covers the rigid islands, flexible interconnects and transitions together.

Drawings reviewed before final price, construction and schedule confirmation.

Build a Rigid-Flex Manufacturing Review Brief

Record what your project requires and which items still need agreement. This worksheet organizes an enquiry; it does not automatically approve files or certify a manufacturing capability.

Define the review scope

Regional construction

Provide rigid/flex layer map, thickness by region and transition drawing.

Materials and alternatives

Name required grades and controlled substitution rules; identify approval owner.

Feature combinations

List copper, line/space, holes, via spans and tolerances together.

Motion and mechanical fit

Define installed shape, restraints, bend duty and mechanical validation owner.

Electrical acceptance

Define continuity, isolation and any agreed impedance/coupon requirements.

Quality records and release

Identify required records, standards/revisions, traceability and release authority.

Nothing is uploaded or submitted by this worksheet.

Published capability limits are not inferred from layer count, a sample photograph or this checklist. The current review intentionally leaves unverified numerical limits unspecified.

Design & manufacturing decisions

Rigid-Flex PCB Capabilities: design tips before release

Evaluate feature combinations, not isolated minima

The smallest conductor, highest layer count and thinnest dielectric are not independent options that can always be combined. Copper thickness, plating, registration, bonding and the intended panel all influence the feasible construction. State which requirements are functional and which can be adjusted.

A useful capability enquiry identifies the critical feature and its tolerance. Include the required measurement method where it affects acceptance. Ask for a proposed build and any exceptions to be returned together, rather than interpreting a generic capability chart as approval for the complete design.

Map the fabrication requirements region by region

List the rigid-region copper count separately from the copper layers continuing into each flex span. Mark local thickness changes, coverlay openings, supports, mechanical holes and any cavities. Distinguish a plated interconnection from a hole used only for alignment or attachment.

Identify blind, buried and microvia structures explicitly. Sequential lamination and HDI construction need their own review; a layer-count selection alone does not describe the manufacturing sequence. For impedance-controlled signals, include the net classes, target values, tolerances and intended reference layers across the transition.

Specify acceptance and evidence before release

A production review should describe what will be checked and what record you need: electrical continuity, dimensions, coupon results where agreed, appearance criteria, traceability or an assembly test report. State the applicable standard and contractual revision rather than relying on a general quality phrase.

A bare-board acceptance class, a company quality-system certificate and a finished-product qualification are different things. If your product needs sector-specific documentation, identify it in the RFQ and confirm its scope before approving the build. A sample photograph does not establish that documentation.

Keep prototypes and production aligned

PCB prototyping can help resolve installation, fixture access and assembly sequence. Record any changes to stack-up, outline, materials or transition geometry so repeat orders use the released revision rather than a drawing that predates those decisions.

Before a repeat order, confirm the agreed alternatives, tooling ownership and inspection package. If your forecast changes significantly, revisit delivery panels, quantity breaks and assembly support with the quote rather than assuming a prototype panel is the most efficient production format.

Build a clear specification

The details that make the review useful

DecisionWhat to defineReview focus
Layer structureCopper count and thickness for each regionRegional layer map and proposed stack-up
Fine features and viasTrace / space, finished hole, aspect and via arrangementFeature combination and process route
Flex behaviorRadius, duty, restraint and local constructionMechanical drawing and validation conditions
Materials and bondingExact grades or controlled substitution rulesData-sheet revision and construction review

Features are reviewed as one construction. A photograph, calculator result or material family does not establish a certified capability, qualified application or approved manufacturing stack-up.

Physical examples

Rigid regions, flexible spans and real transitions

Circuit photographs show rigid islands, flexible spans and panel arrangements. Confirm internal construction and acceptance requirements against your project drawing.

Common project questions

Rigid-Flex PCB Capabilities FAQ

Can I use a capability limit as design approval?

No. Submit the complete combination of material, copper, holes, layers and tolerances. The returned stack-up and exceptions should be reviewed before you release the design.

How do I specify rigid and flex thickness?

Give finished thickness and tolerance for each relevant region. Include local supports and connector areas separately; the flex-region value used for bending is not the rigid-region thickness.

What should accompany a Class 2 or Class 3 request?

State the applicable standard, revision, inspection scope and required records in the procurement package. The requested class is not itself evidence of certification or product qualification.
