Key distinction: Taconic PCB is a material-family request. TLY-5, RF-35, RF-35TC and TSM-DS3b are different specifications; a similar Dk does not make them interchangeable.

Start with documented candidates

Taconic material families and data context

Two documented examples show why the measurement context matters. Values below are typical supplier data, not PCBSync production guarantees or a universal material ranking.

GradeDkDfDeclared test contextDesign decision
TLY-5 TDS ↗2.20 ± 0.020.000910 GHz; IPC-650 2.5.5.5Low-Dk candidate; confirm core thickness and foil
RF-35TC TDS ↗3.5 ± 0.050.00210 GHz; IPC-650 2.5.5.5.1 (Modified)Review heat-flow requirements and the complete construction

TLY-5 TDS revision 2024-03; RF-35TC revision 2024-01, electrical-property table. The methods differ. RF-35TC narrative also cites another Df value without the same table context; do not combine those entries into one guaranteed number.

TLY / TLX families

For named low-Dk woven-glass PTFE options, confirm the exact suffix and current data. A family name cannot define all grades.

RF-35 variants

Keep RF-35, RF-35TC and RF-35HTC as separate specifications. Confirm current documentation and availability for the exact request.

TSM and bonding

Review the selected TSM grade together with its bond-layer system and approved multilayer process.

Design tips and manufacturing decisions

Taconic PCB: what to resolve before fabrication

What is a Taconic PCB?

A Taconic PCB is a circuit board specified with a named laminate from the Taconic RF material family. The finished board also depends on its copper foil, dielectric thickness, bonding layers, surface treatment and manufacturing tolerances. State the full grade and suffix on the fabrication drawing, then agree a stack-up before releasing critical routing.

For purchasing, separate the material request from the finished-board acceptance requirements. Ask the quotation to identify the proposed laminate, availability, minimum purchase constraints, exceptions and documentation scope. A catalog listing is not confirmation of stock, lead time or a tested application.

TLY, TLX, RF and TSM: start with the circuit requirement

For a low-Dk RF path, TLY-5 is one documented candidate to investigate. TLX materials form a separate woven-glass PTFE family. RF-35TC adds ceramic loading and is marketed for thermal-management requirements. TSM-DS3b addresses stable multilayer construction. Use current product-specific data rather than transferring values across a family.

An old drawing calling out RF-35 is not permission to use RF-35TC, RF-35HTC or another suffix. Identify whether the exact construction remains available. If an alternative is proposed, compare electrical, mechanical and processing requirements, then obtain design approval before manufacture.

Taconic vs Rogers: compare constructions, not brand rankings

Put the exact candidates side by side: grade, dielectric thickness, copper type, Dk method and frequency, loss data, thermal behavior, bond system and availability. A nominal dielectric constant near 3.5 does not establish equal phase delay, insertion loss or drill performance in two different materials.

Ask for an equal-scope quote with the same quantity, finish, inspection and delivery terms. There is no dependable universal Taconic-to-Rogers price ratio. Changing a laminate can also require trace-width changes, revised matching elements and a new qualification build.

Hybrid stack-ups and controlled impedance

Mark every RF core and bond layer in order, including the adjacent reference planes. Identify the finished copper and local dielectric spacing of each controlled net. A hybrid construction needs a reviewed bonding system and process; standard epoxy prepreg is not an automatic approval for every PTFE interface.

Use the impedance tool for an early geometry scenario. It does not model coplanar ground, mask, roughness, weave, dispersion or launches. For the released construction, request a field-solver review and agree whether a coupon and TDR report are required. TDR alone does not demonstrate an RF insertion-loss or antenna-performance target.

Manufacturing review: turn risks into written requirements

Ask how the selected grade will be handled, drilled, prepared for plating and bonded in this construction. The AGC processing guide is a starting point for a qualified process; spindle speeds, hit counts and hole-wall preparation cannot be generalized to every Taconic grade or machine.

For the quote package, identify the smallest finished hole, plating requirement, copper balance and critical registration features. Request the inspection evidence that matters to your design, such as a defined microsection, material traceability or electrical coupon. Agree scope and costs before release.

From prototype to repeat production

A first build should answer the largest remaining design questions. Record the material revision, stack-up, controlled geometry and any manufacturing changes. If performance matters across a band, define the fixture, calibration, test structures and acceptance limits before ordering the prototype.

For repeat orders, keep a revision-controlled fabrication pack and clarify whether material substitutions need written approval. Forecast quantities separately from the prototype lot. A realistic RFQ includes the required arrival date and the point at which design, procurement and test decisions can be frozen.

Answers for design and procurement

Taconic PCB FAQ

Can you quote a Taconic PCB from Gerber files alone?

Gerbers show geometry, but the quote also needs material, stack-up, quantities and test requirements. If those are open, send them as questions; the team must confirm construction and availability before a firm quotation.

Is RF-35TC the same as RF-35?

No. Treat the suffix as part of the material identity. Do not transfer properties or approve a replacement from the family name alone.

Does TLY-5 guarantee 77 GHz performance?

A material application example is not a finished-board guarantee. Geometry, copper, launches, fabrication variation and the measurement setup still need validation.

Can I estimate cost before sending files?

The tool provides an uncalibrated generic RF scenario. It does not price the named Taconic grade, special test scope, freight or taxes. Send the reviewed brief for a project quotation.

How do I request an engineering quotation?

Prepare current fabrication files, the proposed stack-up, quantity and requested delivery. Include material and inspection requirements. For controlled-impedance work, add target impedance, signal mode, controlled layers, reference planes and permitted geometry changes. Mark open questions for review. The planner is optional; you can request a quote with the information you have.
