RO3003 PCB: decisions before release

Define the ceramic-filled PTFE construction

RO3003 is a ceramic-filled PTFE laminate. It is not a monolithic ceramic board, and it should not be described as a hydrocarbon RO4000 material. The material family affects the fabrication review, mechanical behavior and bonding choices.

Record the complete part specification with dielectric thickness and copper designation. A photograph cannot reveal these properties. Ask for the appropriate material identity records and keep the approved construction connected to the job revision.

Reconcile datasheet and simulation values

RO3003 reference data distinguish process and design measurements. The current product table gives a design value with its own frequency condition; older documents or models may use other values. Keep the document revision and applicable footnotes in the design record.

Do not replace a validated model because a different Dk appears on a web page. Investigate the measurement method, frequency, thickness and copper assumptions. The comparison tool preserves source conditions and does not calculate a new material Dk from the entered operating frequency.

Manage copper and transitions as part of the loss budget

A low-loss dielectric does not remove conductor loss or launch discontinuities. Identify the foil, the finished trace shape and the surface treatment on the RF path. Keep grounding and connector attachment consistent with the modeled structure.

Use comparable measured or simulated attenuation for the loss worksheet. De-embed fixtures consistently when comparing candidates. If the design relies on an aggressive loss budget, agree a representative coupon and acceptance method before purchasing a production lot.

Review PTFE drilling, plating and bonding

The fabricator should review hole preparation and metallization for the actual PTFE construction. State plated holes, via structure, slots and edge features clearly. Avoid copying process temperatures or drill recipes from an unrelated laminate into the customer drawing.

For multilayers, specify a compatible bonding system and the target pressed geometry. Consider layer symmetry and mechanical support during fabrication and assembly. The goal of the review is a controlled process plan, not simply a change of material name in an FR-4 order.

Compare RO3003G2 as a separate candidate

RO3003G2 has its own resin/filler and copper system and its own reference data. Treat a change between RO3003 and G2 as an engineering change, even if the process Dk labels look similar. Evaluate the complete interconnect and fabrication construction.

Send the old and proposed stack-ups together with the comparison request. Identify what must remain unchanged: connector geometry, enclosure, reference planes or acceptance limits. Ask which design and manufacturing checks must be repeated before approval.

Material identity

Put the grade, foil, thickness and bonding system on the quotation. Ask which material identification and lot records are included.

Manufacturing scope

Confirm the production stackup, plated features, finish and acceptance limits. Approve alternatives explicitly.

Test scope

Electrical continuity, impedance coupons and RF measurements answer different questions. Agree the method and delivery records.

Practical answers

RO3003 PCB FAQ

Is RO3003 a ceramic PCB?

It is a ceramic-filled PTFE laminate. Its fabrication and mechanical behavior differ from a solid alumina or aluminum-nitride substrate.

Is RO3003G2 a drop-in replacement?

Do not assume so. Compare the electrical model, copper, thickness and process requirements and approve the change explicitly.

Does a low Df guarantee board loss?

No. Total response includes conductor, transitions, finish and other geometry-dependent effects. Define a circuit-level measurement when required.

From planning to a reviewed quotation

Ready to discuss your RO3003 PCB project?

Send your board revision, quantity, material, proposed stackup and required delivery date. Add Gerber and drill files when available; ask about open engineering decisions before release.

For RF measurements, define the frequency sweep, reference planes and acceptance limits. Assembly requires a BOM, placement data and test requirements. For an assembled unit, agree the functional test scope separately from any bare-board RF coupon so the quotation identifies which powered measurements are required.

Review and submit your enquiry on Contact. A planning result does not place an order or confirm price, supply or RF performance.
