Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. Click to download BOM template To avoid file missing, please include all files into one folder and compress it into .zip or .rar format.

DFM for Flex PCB: Align Fabrication, Assembly and Installation

Review a flex design across three stages: bare-circuit manufacture, component assembly and installation. Identify the construction details that affect handling, repeatability and the final mechanical fit.

Prototype through production · scope and schedule confirmed after file review

Branched flexible circuit with populated component islands and interconnecting flex sections.

At a glance: Flex DFM should connect copper and coverlay geometry with support, component access and the intended bend behavior; a routing check alone is incomplete.

YOUR NEXT ENGINEERING DECISION

Check the released files, not only the layout

Check agreement between outline, copper, coverlay, stiffener, stack and assembly files. An unchecked item is an open review question; this checklist does not certify manufacturability.

Plan the work before releasing the files

Define fabrication geometry with tolerances

Provide the stackup, copper distribution, coverlay openings, outline, stiffener construction and important dimensional references. Identify which tolerances protect a connector interface or mechanical fit.

Review manufacturability with the chosen fabricator rather than using a generic minimum feature as a guaranteed capability. Compare flexible PCB fabrication with rigid-flex PCB construction before deciding which stackup and transition details to send for review.

Add the assembly view

Show component locations, sides, heights and keep-out areas together with fiducials and tooling access. Define the flex PCB assembly support requirements for printing, placement, soldering, testing and separation.

Keep carrier requirements distinct from permanent stiffeners. Confirm that the support strategy allows access to the required side and does not interfere with paste printing, components or test contacts.

Review the installed shape and verification

Mark bend regions and transitions, connector insertion direction and any repeated movement. Evaluate strain concentration around component islands, stiffener edges and other local construction changes.

Do not use a single radius rule as proof of reliability. The final decision needs the actual stackup, loading and application requirements, with suitable verification. Record unresolved questions before tooling and procurement are released.

Turn a DFM conversation into a controlled release

A useful DFM result is a list of decisions with owners, affected files and acceptance evidence. Separate a missing customer requirement from a supplier proposal. For example, an unspecified connector insertion thickness needs a customer requirement; a suggested coverlay opening change needs a reviewed manufacturing proposal. Both remain open until the responsible party accepts the resulting drawing revision.

Use three states for each issue: unresolved, proposed and accepted. Do not label a checklist complete merely because every document exists. Check that documents agree. A placement file from one assembly revision and an outline from another can each be valid on their own while describing an impossible build. Record the exact change and the files it affects.

As an illustrative review, consider a connector tail that fits electrically but has an unspecified reinforcement adhesive. The next action is to define the complete local thickness and allowable tolerance against the connector drawing. It is not to increase the nominal stiffener thickness until a screenshot looks correct. Link the accepted stack back to both procurement and inspection instructions.

Close the review with a dated release index, agreed exceptions and the tests actually ordered. A continuity test, dimensional check and installed-motion validation answer different questions. Keep these separate in the purchase scope; neither an online checklist nor a passed bare-board test certifies the application.

Keep the review concrete

Include these requirements in your enquiry

01

The complete stackup is available

02

Coverlay and stiffener dimensions are controlled

03

Critical fit tolerances have datums

04

Carrier and tooling access are reviewed

05

Installed bend regions are identified

06

Verification matches static or dynamic use

Mark unresolved items explicitly. Ask the quotation to identify proposed exceptions, required customer approvals and any inspection or special-process charges that remain open.

DFM Flex PCB FAQ

Does flex DFM replace an assembly review?

No. It should include assembly requirements, but the actual BOM, support and process still need review by the assembler.

Should flex and rigid-flex share the same design rules?

Not automatically. Construction and transitions differ; evaluate the selected technology and application rather than transferring limits unchanged.
