Notes:
For PCB fabrication, we require PCB design file in Gerber RS-274X format (most preferred), *.PCB/DDB (Protel, inform your program version) format or *.BRD (Eagle) format. For PCB assembly, we require PCB design file in above mentioned format, drilling file and BOM. DFM vs DFA for PCB Projects: Separate Fabrication and Assembly Questions

Distinguish board manufacturability from assembly readiness while keeping both connected. Assign review findings to the correct files and decision owner before releasing a PCB assembly project.

Prototype through production · scope and schedule confirmed after file review

At a glance: In PCB work, DFM commonly addresses manufacturability of the board and production route, while DFA focuses on assembling the chosen components; organizations may use the labels differently.

Plan the work before releasing the files

Define the review boundary

PCB manufacturing review considers construction and geometry requirements, while assembly review considers part-to-footprint fit, placement, access and process compatibility. Some issues cross both boundaries.

Agree the review scope rather than assuming a file checker covers every aspect. For PCB assembly, review component orientation and functional testability separately; a bare-board check does not automatically verify them.

Route findings to the correct owner

A finished-hole or board-outline change may involve fabrication and assembly together. A footprint mismatch requires design and component review, while missing placement data is a release-package issue.

Record the affected revision, proposed resolution and approval owner. Avoid correcting production files independently of the source design. Carry accepted decisions into the PCB documentation package and identify cross-process changes to review during first article inspection.

Close the loop before release

Confirm that approved changes appear in the regenerated fabrication and assembly outputs. Recheck any related constraints affected by the change.

Use the tailored checklist to prepare the review request and leave unresolved items visible. A checked item is customer-reported preparation, not automated DFM/DFA analysis, engineering approval or proof that a design will function.

Keep the review concrete

Include these requirements in your enquiry

01

Review scope is explicitly defined

02

Fabrication and assembly inputs are available

03

Findings identify the affected revision

04

Each decision has an approval owner

05

Approved changes reach all output files

06

Open exceptions are recorded before release

Mark unresolved items explicitly. Ask the quotation to identify proposed exceptions, required customer approvals and any inspection or special-process charges that remain open.

DFM vs DFA FAQ

Does DFM include DFA automatically?

Not always. Confirm the service and tool scope used by the reviewer.

Can an automated check validate circuit function?

No. Manufacturing checks and functional design validation answer different questions.
